Hello JC Students,
The following is the January newsletter for the SRJC Recycling Program. Please send mail to me (Guy) if you have any questions or suggestions. I would love to read them and hear about your interests:
gtillotson@santarosa.edu.
Plastic Clamshells now recyclable!
The cafeteria has switched to a plastic #1 product so the clear AN
D tanclamshells can all be recycled (if they are free of food waste).
If you are unsure about which plastic can be recycled, just remember "If it crinkles, it gives me wrinkles" (meaning throwing plastic in the garbage gives a idealistic person wrinkles; E.G. Oreo cookie tray)
Classroom Bins
We will now have classroom bins in some of our most used classrooms in Shuhaw (south hall) and Emeritus.
We will add more classroom bins as we are able. If your rooms do not have a blue bin, please recycle in a hallway. Write me if you know of a room that gets a large amount of recycling in the garbage and I'll prioritize a blue there! I am looking at Race and middle Baker classrooms next.
Recycling Bin Grant Awarded
Our campus has been awarded a $4500 grant
for 12 new outdoor bins which will likely be placed on our lovely quad. Thanks to Coca Cola and the nonprofit "Keep America Beautiful" organization for this donation.
Coffee Cups
We continue the campaign to encourage our community to reduce the number of paper coffee cups used.
Alarming stat you can pass on
: How many paper coffee cups do we use annually in the U.S.?
40 million? No .....900 million? No ....58 BILLION.....Yes.
Divided by 248 million adults is 248 cups per U.S. adult per year. Let's use a travel mug and lower that number.
Bubble Wrap
Please recycle bubble wrap in indoor recycling bins
. We have found two community members who will take as much as we can provide.
Praises
Thanks and praises to the Doyle Library administrative team who purchased 15 bins for distribution throughout the 2
nd
to 4
th
floors. Their dedication has helped me increase recycling by about 30% - we now take out two barrels a day. Thanks to Diego Osorio, our former recycler (now groundskeeper at the Windsor campus), who collected about 1,600 bottles and 800 cans for us last semester!
