2017 Spring Season Preview

The 2017 Pacific Masters Spring Season provides plenty of competitive opportunities with eight local meets, two postal events and a recognized senior games event. Distance enthusiasts can start anytime during the first two months. Read all about it here.
Speedo USMS 1-Hour ePostal National Championship
January 1-February 28
 
Start training now for an annual classic! Whether you're completing the 1-Hour ePostal for competition, fun, or fitness, all who wish to participate are welcome. The objective is to swim as far as possible in one hour in any pool 25 yards or longer. Record your splits, submit your results, and see how you stack up against other swimmers around the country. Hosted by O*H*I*O Masters Swim Club. Please note that the timeframe for this event has been expanded by the USMS Long Distance Committee due to the extreme weather conditions often experienced during the month of January. Information on the 1-Hour ePostal can be seen here; online registration opens on January 1, 2017.  
TAM Jon Steiner Memorial 1650 Postal
January 1-February 28
 
Swim a mile for lung cancer research -- no set fee, pay what you want. 50% of your payment is donated to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation in honor of the event's founder, Jon Steiner. Sponsored by Tamalpais Aquatic Masters. Mail-in entries only; entries must be postmarked by Saturday March 11, 2017. Registration information and entry form. Your 1-Hour Postal Swim 1-mile split can be applied.   
Santa Rosa Masters SCY Resolution Meet
January 21
 
Indoor SCY event featuring 50s and 200s of all strokes. 100 IM and 100 free are also included. Bonus: all 50 free entrants are automatically entered free of charge in the Resolution 50 Free Challenge. This "event" will attempt to determine a single winner from all age groups and both sexes. For more information on the Challenge and the meet, click here. Online registration is now open.  
The Olympic Club 1500 SCM Swim Meet

Valentine's Affair
February 4

Registration will be open sometime this week. Please visit Pacific Masters Schedule if you are planning to attend this meet.
Splash & Dash, Sprint Pentathlon
February 11

What's not to like about a short morning meet with 50's of all strokes, 100 IM and 200 Medley relays? Richmond Swim Center's state-of-the-art indoor pool, will host their first meet at this facility.  An optimum meet for first-time competitors and for anyone to set new records in the short course yard Sprint Pentathlon.  You must swim all five individual events to be awarded embroidered towels offered to first place winners in each age group.  After the meet, join your friends for lunch and a stroll at nearby Solano Avenue. Online entries are due February 1. Deck entries are also permitted.

USMS Coach Certification

USMS is hosting classroom instruction for Levels 1 and 2 coach certification on January 28 from 8:30 to 4:30 at Hyatt House in Pleasant Hill. USMS membership is required. Registration and information.
 
Call for Coach of the Year Nominations
Due by February 15

Please consider nominating your coach for the Pacific Masters Coach of the Year Award. Submissions should include a nomination letter along with a maximum of four support letters. A description of the award along with the nomination and selection process from the Pacific Masters Administrative Handbook is repeated below. Nominations for Pacific Masters Coach of the Year are due Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 6 p.m. Requirements and nominations process can be found here.

Important Rules Changes for 2017

1. Age for Open Water and Postal swims - now based on age as of DECEMBER 31, not actual birthdate (except 18 year olds who need to be 18 on the day of event).
2. One-hour ePostal - now extended to end of February to allow swimmers more opportunities to complete this event.
3. 6-event daily limit for swim meets - meet host now has the option to allow SIX individual events per day per swimmer which is one more than the customary five events.
4. Same stroke/distance offered multiple times: For example, the 100 Free could be offered both Saturday AND Sunday to allow swimmers only going to one day of the meet to swim the event. The event number must be different each day. Scoring and ranking for the event are up to the meet host.

Pacific Masters Monthly Meeting
January 18

The monthly meeting will be held at Heather Farms Community Center on Wednesday, January 18, beginning with dinner at 7 p.m.and the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All interested members are encouraged to attend. The Community Center is located by the Walnut Creek Pool at 301 N. San Carlos Dr., Walnut Creek, CA.
