Greetings and a joyful 2017 to each of you!

We look forward to welcoming your students back to campus tomorrow. This upcoming semester is sure to be filled with many meaningful learning experiences, opportunities to show a growth mindset, and building lasting connections within our community. We are so honored to be a part of your student's learning journey!

I wanted to take a bit of time to share two resources that I think you may find helpful. They are both places I turn to for some extra information or inspiration. The first is Common Sense Media. This is a site with reviews, ratings, information, and guidance for navigating the digital world for your family. The content our students are accessing is changing so rapidly that it's tough to keep up. This site has been really helpful for me as I check book titles, movies, and apps for the best fit at different developmental levels. The  Parents Concerns section has also been really beneficial as I look for resources regarding digital content for my family and for our students.

The second resource is one that holds a special place in my heart. I am deeply interested in how student mindset impacts learning. One content area where we sometimes find challenges in perceived ability is within math. We have students who have a narrative about themselves that they "are not math people" or "are terrible at math." You can imagine the uphill battle a student faces if that's the self-talk they experience. A researcher and teacher from Stanford, Jo Boaler, is working to shift mathematical mindsets. On her website, Youcubed.org, you can find resources about growth mindset, brain science, math activities, and articles for parents. Research tells us that our ways of talking with kids about math has huge implications in their mathematical mindsets and mathematical learning. Take a look at Jo Boaler's work and let me know what you think. I'd love to talk with you more about how we can support students' growth mindset.

Thank you for your partnership in supporting the learning here at CCDS. We look forward to learning along with you and your students in 2017 and building on the successes of last semester.

Warmly,
Wendy

Safety First

This new year brings a new safety program to CCDS, Student Safety Patrol. Thanks to the Northern California AAA for introducing this program to us.

A team of fifth grade students supervised by Colly Fischer and Stuart Langford will be assisting during after-school pick-up. Their duties will be safely assisting students into cars and helping at crosswalks. The three-minute loading zones will be enforced. If you park longer than that, a friendly adult or student may ask you to move along providing for a continuous flow of traffic. Patrollers will be helping students into cars, so don't be surprised! We hope this will improve our after-school gridlock and make it a safer environment for the students.

SAFETY REMINDERS
  • Do not park in the red zone.
  • Do not leave your car parked or unattended in the loading zone.
  • Do not leave your car when the motor is running.
  • Pull up in the loading zone allowing another vehicle to pull in behind.
  • Please be aware of all pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  • Come to a full stop at the stop sign.
  • As of January 1, it is illegal to have a cell phone in your hand while driving.

LCAP/WASC Stakeholder Meeting
Monday, January 30
Middle School Common Area
6-7:30 p.m.

Interested in our WASC and LCAP progress? The WASC and LCAP process will be discussed and reviewed at this stakeholder meeting and we would like your input. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Please RSVP here by January 23 so we have an accurate head count.  We hope you will join us.

The LCAP and WASC provide a valuable way for our organization to purposefully look at the work we do. Parent and student input is an integral part for both of these important plans. Chico Country Day School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Additionally, the state funding formula includes a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) which is the way our school can share performance data, needs, actions and outcomes.

Please take a few minutes to complete the LCAP parent survey even if you do not plan on attending (this is the same survey we sent in October.)   LCAP Parent Survey

Our 100th day is almost here! On February 3, a special day is planned for our Kindergarten-3rd grade students.  One hundred minutes of fun will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 10:40 a.m.   There will be a variety of booths with math activities.  If you are interested in helping run an activity or help with set-up/clean-up, please email Mrs. Chik.

CALLING ALL SIBLINGS

Do you have a child enrolled in CCDS and another who will be ready for kindergarten in the fall of 2017?

The  2017-18 Lottery Application is now available on the CCDS website and in the main office. We need to  reserve kindergarten spaces for all the younger siblings coming into CCDS.

Please fill out the school application and return to Stacy in the main office. When filling out the application, note the name of your other children at CCDS.

You do not need to fill out the Proof of Residence Form on the back of the application if you already have students in CCDS.  Children need to be five years old by September 1, 2017.

20th Annual Auction for Excellence

Only seven weeks until our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

As always, your support is necessary to make this event a success. Could you volunteer in any of the following areas?

Do you enjoy taking and uploading photos and writing descriptions?
Then we need you as an Online Auction Coordinator.  After our live event, we will be using an online charity auction site. We need your help during the 2-3 weeks prior to the auction. The hours are flexible and auction attendance is not necessary. 1-2 more volunteers needed

Every year, we have amazing - and large - items available for bidding.
The Large Item Coordinators will be available during the live auction to ensure that the winning bidder of these large items has a plan for getting their prize back home. 2 volunteers needed

During the hustle and bustle of the live auction portion of the event, the Runner/Spotters are crucial to help identify bidders for our auctioneer, get signatures from the winner, and get the bid sheet to the bankers. 4 volunteers needed

WINE PULL

Are interested in donating to the auction, but don't know what to give?  Do you have a favorite bottle you would like to share?  We are now accepting wine donations of any variety with a minimum value of $20.  All donations can be dropped off to Lisa Hoppe in the main office.

DO YOU HAVE AN ITEM TO DONATE?

Aside from these positions, we always need help gathering items for bidding, such as a rental property that you would like to offer for a weekend or a special talent you'd be willing to share. We want to hear from you! Please fill out this donation form and we will contact you.

If you are able to support this event in any way, please contact us as soon as possible:

Stacey Owen - Auction Co-chair

Lisa Hoppe - Family/Community Liaison

Look for your invitation to arrive by the end of the month!

We Love our Foster Grandparents

We feel fortunate to have two special ladies working in classrooms at our school as foster grandparents. They volunteer through a program sponsored by Passages that offers opportunities to people over 55 who love children.  Miss Georgeann and Miss Sonia work many hours each week and bring an extra special presence to the classrooms in which they volunteer. We are grateful for all they do for CCDS!

Miss Georgeann can be found in Mrs. Efseaff's 1st grade classroom most days. This is her
second year at CCDS!  Miss Georgeann shared a few of her special memories.

"My life has taken me to San Francisco in the 1980's when the 49ers won the Super Bowl three times.  I got to see Joe Montana in the parade. I also went to many art openings and travelled to museum exhibits. Next, I went to Kauai, where from a distance, people mistook me for the mayor of Kauai, JoAnn Yukimura.  It was here that I worked in childcare for several resorts.  The most famous celebrity I worked for was Reba McEntire.  I almost met Tom Brady, but ony spoke to him on the phone.  He has a nice voice. Before moving to Chico, I lived in Ashland where I enjoyed attending Oregon Shakespeare Festival and films at the annual International Film Festival.  Now, I am enjoying my fifth year of volunteering for Passages Foster Grandparent Program."

Miss Sonia works in Mrs. Chik's kindergarten classroom.  Here's what Miss Sonia shared:

"I've lived in Chico for almost three years. I love it.  It's such a beautiful town!  I was a stay-at-home mom.  When my children left home I felt so lost.  I heard about the grandparent's program and am so happy I decided to volunteer.  I love it.  It has made me so happy and given a purpose in my life.  I love all the children in Mrs. Chik's class.  I have pictures on my fridge again and I feel so blessed.  I love helping Mrs. Chik.  She is a wonderful teacher.  I'm so impressed with how this school is run and all the people who work here.  Thank you for your kindness!"

Thank you  Georgeann and Sonia!
Celebrating and Sharing Our Successes

The class exhibitions were a great success!  Kindergarten taught about nutrition through an alphabet taste-test, while 1st grade shared their findings about kindness. Third grade educated their visitors about the past through three different curricular approaches, and 2nd grade taught their preschool buddies about matter through a variety of hands-on activities. Fourth and 5th grade students became first-time authors! Fourth grade published personal memoirs, along with beautiful self-portraits, and then dressed in their holiday best and showcased their book at Beatniks one evening.

There was one exhibit that took on a life of its own. On December 16, Made in Chico hosted a book-signing by our 5th graders who just published their first book.   Maybe you've seen "Strolling Through Chico" floating around campus. Or maybe you know one of the authors personally.

The book contains 62 student narratives, each about a favorite place in Chico.  Check out this article in Chico News and Review to learn more. The book sold out at $15 a copy and a second edition is being printed to fill additional orders.  There will be a few more copies at Made in Chico next week if you would like to purchase one. All profits  will be given to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The project is complete, but the community is still responding. All the students sent their original piece to the business or place they chose to write about. Henry Wong, owner of Rice Bowl, received the  article and watercolor and dropped by the school to express his gratitude.  He walked in one morning to drop off a little gift to the writer and had an impromptu visit with the 5th grade students to learn more about the writing process. And, of course, Mr. Wong bought a copy of the book! Other Chico businesses have responded with gifts and thank-yous to the student who wrote about their special "Chico place."  .
