Reviews
Your Fall/Winter edition arrived in the mail yesterday. Wow. It really is a fantastic edition. Obviously a lot of quality work went into producing this. Very impressive. Particularly enjoyed David Bush's piece on Bruce Jenkins, and all the incredible photos that accompanied the story. Great job all the way around.
Such a spectacular way you handle and showcase your photographers!
The new edition is fabulous. You nailed it again! Kudos.

San Francisco 49ers Season Review (partial)
Game Eleven -- Miami Dolphins 31, San Francisco 49ers 24
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) was an offensive juggernaut on Sunday, Nov. 27 passing for 296 yards and rushing for 113 yards, yet he was stopped just two yards shy of the goal line and possibly tying the game as time ran out. Final score:
|
San Francisco 49ers
tight end Vance McDonald (89) hauled in four receptions for 60 yards but was kept out of the Dolphins' end zone and the 49ers lost their 10th straight game,

Game Twelve -- Chicago Bears 26, San Francisco 49ers 6
|
San Francisco 49ers
running back Carlos Hyde (28) fell 8 yards short of gaining 100 yards, with 20 carries for 92 yards and a 4.6 average, but could not reach the end zone.
|
In an unrelenting storm and with only five carries for 20 yards,
49ers
running back Shaun Draughn (24) had limited success on the slippery and snow-laden field.

The Niners led 14-0 after the first quarter, but would falter thereafter, losing to the Jets in overtime, 23-17, on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
|
While short in stature at 5'9", San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (17) still separated himself from New York Jets defensive back Buster Skrine (41) and pulled in five receptions for 50 yards but was kept out of the end zone in the 49ers 12th straight loss

Richard Lupoff waited over 70 years to throw out the first pitch at an Oakland A's game and it was a dream come true several years ago. Richard received the honor in recognition of his longtime love affair with the A's, dating back to 1943, when he saw his first A's game in Philadelphia.
Here is how Richard recalls the experience ...
Credit goes to my younger son, Tom. He got in touch with the A's and said, "My dad has been an A's fan since he was little kid and saw them play in Philadelphia in 1943. That's 70 years. Do you think that deserves some recognition?"
Now bear in mind, I didn't know anything about this until one morning. Phone rings, it's Tom, and he asks, "Dad, can you still throw a baseball sixty feet six inches?" I said I could. He said, "Well, then, you throw out the first pitch next Friday."
And I did. No problem with the sixty-and-six, but it was the first time I ever threw off a mound. I didn't want to fling the ball over the catcher's head and over-compensated and threw a one-bouncer.
The strangest part of the experience was this: I'd been apprehensive for several days in advance, frightened that I'd disgrace myself in front of 20,000 spectators. But the instant I set foot on the infield grass I became totally calm and focused. I think this is what real athletes call "being in a zone."
The 20,000 people in the stands disappeared. Everybody disappeared except the catcher and me. I just threw the ball. I felt totally comfortable and at-home. Given the chance, I think I could have pitched nine innings.
A wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Richard Lupoff has written two dozen novels and more than 40 short stories and is also a contributor to the Ultimate Sports Guide. Lupoff's latest book is
Where Memory Hides: A Writer's Life,
published by Bold Venture Press.
