Art Car Update
The Super Bowl Fan Experience opens at the end of the month and will feature an exciting collaboration between Energy Institute, Noble Energy, and The Orange Show. Students have been working tirelessly with Ms. Phillips, Ms. Lockhart, and Houston Art Car artist Julian Luna to create an interactive Art Car that demonstrates all the ways petroleum has improved our everyday lives. Students pitched three designs to the executive team at Noble Energy after Thanksgiving break and were approved to complete their "Cube Design."  It incorporates images of petroleum products, laser cut in our Makers Space and then lined with LED lights. The project was featured on Fox 26 over the break.  To view the segment please click  HERE.

In addition to being featured as part of NFL Fan Experience, the art car will be entered in Houston's Art Car Parade this April. You won't want to miss the final product - stay tuned for more updates and pictures.

ENERGY FRC Steamworks Kickoff 2017
First Robotics Competition began this past Saturday, January 7th with the Energy FRC Steamworks Kickoff 2017. THE FRC team will have just six weeks to build and programs robots to perform specific and challenging tasks as announced Saturday. In addition, they must also raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and perform community outreach. We look forward to seeing what the team builds and we wish our Energy team the best of luck over the next six weeks!

DiscoverU Summer Abroad
Congratulations ninth grade students Leo Wall and Nicolette Berguirese! Leo and Nicolette have been accepted into the Council of International Education Exchange program. After meeting with a representative who visited campus during lunch last semester, they completed applications through DiscoverU and found out they were accepted to study abroad in Morocco this summer.  Leo and Nicolette will spend a month in Morocco and will be placed with a host family for the duration of their stay. In addition to their acceptance with CIEE, DiscoverU has awarded them scholarships covering the deposit for the program and airfare!

Don't miss your chance to participate in an amazing summer opportunity like this! Each morning a Fantastic Learning Opportunity (FLO) will be featured on the morning announcements and will be posted on the board outside the main office. Check in with Ms. Andrews if you have questions. Make your summer plans now!

POSSE Scholarship Recipients

Last week Energy's four POSSE Scholarship recipients were awarded downtown at the Annual POSSE Ceremony. After being selected from over 1,200 Houston students; Talon, Gerardo, Andrew and Abigail were awarded full tuition scholarships to attend Colby College, University of Virginia, Carleton College, and Wellesley College. The POSSE program will begin working with students this semester in order to prepare them for their college experiences, by introducing them to a group (posse) of students from the Houston area who will also be attending their colleges. We are very excited that in the first year working with our campus we had four students selected! Congratulations Talon, Gerardo, Andrew, and Abigail!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

This year's first staff spotlight shines on our very own IT guru, Jimi Cavazos. Mr. Jimi is the computer technician at Energy HS who helps fix and maintain ALL of the technology at our school. A popular student question here at Energy is, "Can I go see Jimi?"

So what can you do to make his job easier? "Double check to see if there is anything on your keyboard before you close it." says Jimi. Many computer screens are cracked every year just because students forget to clear off their keyboard before closing it.

Outside of work, he is an active drummer in 3 bands! His first band, Brumes, is a Pop Punk band with a horror theme and a female singer that plays piano. Dude Man Hey!, his second band, is a surf rock cover band. He has most recently created a Romans tribute band. Thank you Jimi for all you do at Energy!

Additionally, we co-sponsored the food drive and the winter warms drive with the Energy Converters and Ladies of Energy.

College applications: the different types, importance of FAFSA, CSS Profiles, etc.

College applications are one of those things that high school students tend to put off until senior year. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors don't really know about the ways to apply to colleges, FAFSA, and the CSS profile. Below is the basic information for all of the aforementioned items.

Common Application: This is the application accepted by the majority of colleges and universities. It varies slightly from each school but by far one of the easiest application methods.

Apply Texas: This is how you apply to Texas public universities like A&M, UT, and Texas Tech.

Early Decision: Application due by November. Applying Early Decision allows you to get your admission response back quicker than other application types. However, ED comes with a contract that requires the applicant to attend that specific school, provided they get accepted.

Early Action: Similar to Early Decision, this application allows for a quicker response from the college, but this time without the contractual obligation to attend the school. This application is also due early to mid-November.

Regular Decision: Due in the month of January, usually on the 1st, and the regular decision is the last opportunity to apply to most universities. Admission decisions come out sometime in March and April, so if you don't want to wait that long, consider applying using the first two options.

FAFSA: The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. When applying to colleges, the government distributes funds to those who need monetary help to attend college, provided they fill out the FAFSA. Even if you feel like you don't qualify for federal aid, FAFSA is still something you should fill out sooner rather than later, as there are limited funds and it is first come, first serve.

CSS Profile: The College Scholarship Service Profile is also a way to apply for financial aid provided by the college, not the government. This profile is crucial for getting substantial financial aid from the university you wish to attend and should not be overlooked in your application process. Please note, the CSS Profile only applies to private colleges and universities.
