News for the Weeks of December 10 and 17, 2017
" But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift... The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ..."

  - Ephesians 4:7,11-12

Each of us are empowered with gifts by Christ for the building up of Christ's body, the Church. We use those gifts every day, but there are times that we do not use them, sometimes because we don't know we have the gifts, sometimes because we are afraid to use them for one reason or another, other times because we might feel that it is not appropriate to use them, or we don't know if it's the right time or place.

Among the gifts that God gives are the gifts of empowerment and discernment--often when those gifts are used wisely, many in the Body of Christ can employ their gifts because they are being empowered to do so.  When The Rt. Rev. Bruce Caldwell began his time with the Diocese of Lexington as the Bishop Provisional in June 2016, those gifts of empowerment and discernment were among the ones that he began to share with us as we started our walk together.

In June, when he started with us, we were nearly three months into Bishop Doug Hahn's suspension, our Diocesan leadership was committed to continuing to do the work God was calling us to do, but we were still returning from the shock of the implications of the suspension.  Bishop Caldwell hit the ground running with us as a diocese--he was aware that healing was needed and was a part of that healing beginning, but he was also aware that we were, and still are, faithful followers of Christ filled with the gifts God bestows.  His time of partnership began with working with the Executive Council, Standing Committee, and all different aspects of our common life together and his gifts of empowerment and discernment helped to bring forth the wonderful gifts among the faithful here.

While we might have wished that he could stay longer before his return to Minnesota and family, the time that he has walked with us has helped us to hone our ministries, our gifts, and concentrate more on how God is moving in and through us in a time when our society is changing; Church is changing, and we are better equipped as we begin this next phase of our life in Christ.

Bishop Bruce, we are grateful for our time together with you as our Bishop Provisional.  We will miss you and Brenda, and you go with our gratitude and God's blessing.

The Rev. Canon Elise Johnstone
The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington
