*** Membership Renewal Time ***

MMAC Pres. Newsletter Message,  January 2017

As president of the club, it is my duty to remind everyone that membership renewals are now due for 2017. As I mentioned in an earlier newsletter message, no dues means no membership, and no membership means no flying at Bill Martin Field. I hope all of you will take the time to download a membership application off the website and mail your check in as soon as possible. I also want to remind you that your membership is not valid unless you are current in your AMA membership as well.
At our February club meeting, we will have the club's annual Key Night where new keys will be available for the field gate and storage container. Y our club and AMA memberships must be up-to-date to receive your key.
In other business, the indoor fly at the Milford Youth Center (MYC) continues to be a great success. We had 19 pilots at our last event on Friday, January 21. Check out the club event calendar on the website or in the newsletter for the indoor fly schedule at the MYC. If you haven't tried it yet, indoor flying is a hoot! We even have a moving aircraft carrier for those brave enough to show off their flying abilities!
The club executive committee recently met to plan and outline future events for 2017.  Please mark your calendars now for the annual Winter Build Night schedule to take place at our club meeting on April 25, 2017. As always members present will be judging the best in several categories of aircraft. I hope all of you are busy getting that plane, helicopter or quad copter ready for the competition and the flying season.
Also mark your calendars for our annual Field Day to be conducted on the last Saturday in April. The exact date is April 29.  As always, we ask members to come out and share in the cleanup and maintenance of the field by cleaning up debris along the access road and fertilizing the field. We'll also be making a further assessment of any other things that will need attention.  Come out and pitch in and enjoy a day of flying along with getting a free lunch of hot dogs and burgers.
I would also like to report that the executive committee is already hard at work planning other events for the year, such as a Float Fly sometime in May along with a number of Fun Flys that will be scheduled for the summer and fall. Keep an eye on the club event calendar and come to the monthly meetings in order to help determine future club events. In addition, we have started the process of procuring Plains Park in Milford for our annual Bill O'Donnell Milford Day that is held on the Sunday of Columbus Day Weekend in October. More details will be forthcoming in the months ahead.
In closing, I hope everyone is taking advantage of the warmer weather we're having and getting in some "stick" time even though it's still winter. Although, I did mount snow skis on one airplane that I'm itching to try out! See you either at the field and/or at our next club meeting.
Remember, airspeed and altitude are your friends.

Vice President's Report
January 2017

Happy New Year to one and all.

We had a successful continuation of our Frozen Finger Fun Fly on January 1, 2017.  The attendance wasn't quite as much as we had hoped for, but a good dozen of us got some stick time in.  Burgers, hot dogs and sausage were cooked expertly by our leader, Mickey Callahan.  Hats off to him for his grill master performance.  Although the weather wasn't terrible, the gusting winds made flying challenging.  At least the temperature was above freezing and the sun was out.  Our artillery crew unfortunately was not able to attend, due to family conflicts, but at least I was able to launch another go with my towed target behind my 42 year old Lou Andrews H Ray. The gusting wind was too much for the target, and it snapped in half when I had to make a quick reversal turn to avoid going into the trees.  Target has been recovered and repaired, with plans to make it stronger for next year.  The H Ray suffered a different fate, as I began abusing the poor thing when I began flying it with no respect for its age.  I began banging the sticks around as if it was a 3D airplane, when the fin broke off, causing the plane to go into an unrecoverable flat spin.  It landed in the brush, nestled right-side up in a small bush, with the plane finder sounding loudly and giving me something to home in on.  Ten minutes later I had it out and back to the pit area where we all laughed at what can happen to a plane when it is pushed beyond its rightful limits.

I was able to get out to Bill Martin Field this past Sunday, January 15 and got some more stick time in.  Just Mark Schultz, Steve Ames and I were there, but so was the wind so we limited our flights significantly.  A few families came by to watch us fly and I invited them to come back next week at an earlier time so that they can get hooked into doing what we do.  The field is still in decent shape, although it can be very rough on an airplane having a hard landing because the field is frozen as solid as the ice surface at Boston Garden.

Don't forget to attend our next indoor flying which is scheduled for this Friday, January 20 at the Milford Youth Center. You may not even need to bring your own plane, as we have a few that we can lend you.

I must close now, and retire to my workshop and start fixing all of the planes that had a hard season last year.  My H Ray is already repaired, and so are many of the planes that took some hits during last month's indoor flying.  I hope many of you are working hard on your Winter Projects.

Respectfully, John Holcomb, Vice President MMAC.
