A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
What is Sacred?

One of the questions we had to answer for the just-completed accreditation self-study was, "What recurring rituals and traditions in the school feel 'sacred' to the students and adults?" The faculty generated a very long list of what we think is sacred to us, but we immediately wondered what the students might think. We cut the list down to about a dozen well-known rituals and presented the shortlist to all the students, asking each one to choose "one thing we must never consider dropping," and to tell us why.
Here are a few of the vote-getters:
  • Senior Speech: ". . . because it honors seniors and lets them give advice and share their experience with younger grades."
  • Opening Day Barbecue: "It's a great way to start the year and a unique introduction to what the school actually represents."
  • The Husky Pledge: "I think it shows that we are helpful, respectful, healthy, and creative."
  • Closing Ceremonies: "These are special to our school because they make other grades feel special, not just 8th and seniors."
  • Prom: "It's not only a tradition here, but a tradition in American Society."
  • Banging the gong to start and end the school year: ". . . is like a welcoming statement that makes you proud to be a Husky."
  • The faculty holiday song: "Many view teachers as evil, for they give us lots of homework and tests. This event allows the students to laugh at their teachers and have a common joke."
Other frequently mentioned rituals were Spirit Week, Quiz Bowl, Pi Day, and the faculty/student softball and dodgeball games.
The top vote-getter, by far?
  • International Day: "It highlights the diversity on campus. Not only do we get to share our cultures, but we get to eat and mingle with others.
And one student refused to be drawn: "Honestly, I can't picture us without any of these rituals. They are what make us unique. Please keep all of them!"

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Senior Speech: Phoebe Bloomfield
I overcame a lot of fears over the years and I am sure there will be more in the future. As a smart man, Dr. Seuss, once said, "I hear there are troubles more than one kind. Some come ahead and some come behind. But I brought a big bat I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles will have troubles with me." I always took this as troubles meant fears. And that if you have the right tools then you can overcome your fears easily. Click here to read more.

Senior Speech: Simone Elias
Coming to Rolling Hills Prep was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Four years later and I'm standing in front of you all a completely different person. As many of you know I'm not the quietest person and I couldn't care less about what people think. I don't dread school every morning anymore, I look forward to it. I don't look in the mirror and cry now, I look into the mirror and see a stronger person. Someone who is beautiful, not based off of what I show on the outside but what I offer on the inside.  Click here to read more.

The sticker should be placed on the outside, rear window, on the driver's side. If you need a sticker, either for a new vehicle or to replace an old and worn sticker, please come to the office pick up a new sticker.

Wellness Program Assessment Notice

athletic_running_shoes.jpg
Your son/daughter will be participating in the Wellness Program assessment during physical education class beginning   Monday, December 5th through Thursday, December 8th. Our Wellness Testing is a health-related fitness assessment developed by The Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research  and is a research-based criterion referenced test.
Wellness Program is a quality assessment for three reasons:
1.  Wellness Program establishes a baseline of a healthy fitness zone from which students can set goals and check their progress (non-competitive) to plan for lifelong physical activity, maintain and improve their fitness level. Health-related fitness assessment measures students' cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility and body composition.
2.  Wellness Program provides recommended activity program options that will help students reach healthy fitness zones in those areas where they need to improve.
3.  Wellness Program  does not place an emphasis on skill or sports-related fitness time. It  does not compare students to other students.
Wellness Program tests all students regardless of age, gender, or ability. Students are encouraged to be self-aware of health-related fitness and take responsibility by setting personal fitness goals. When students focus on the process of doing their personal best, a more positive lifelong impact is achieved.

On test days please make sure that your child eats a balanced meal and gets enough sleep the night before.
We believe by providing you and your child with this health-related fitness information, you can lead your child toward a healthy lifestyle. A healthy student is better prepared to learn and perform in all aspects of life.
