Nutritional goal setting for the New Year

As the New Year approaches so do those yearly resolutions and goals. For most, these only last a short amount of time. That's why it is important to bring structure and accountability to your New Years goals. Setting goals is easy, but achieving them isn't.

S.M.A.R.T. Is an acronym from Paul J. Meyer's book Attitude is Everything . It stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Instead of a vague goal or resolution, this gives us effective tools to make it a reality so you can reach successfully (and make last) your New Years intentions.

Specific . A good goal is a specific goal. It indicates the who, what, when, where, and why. Its best to get clear and concise to lay down your groundwork. Write it down. By writing a specific goal you are rooting this into your subconscious Narrowing your nutritional goals will make this a positive result. Maybe instead of saying "no more sugar " Make some smaller specific goals, for example instead of a processed sugary snack tell yourself you will replace that with a piece of nutritious fruit. If you want to start an exercise or training program, pick one that you can know the de

Measurable . Effective goals also specify what success looks like, and they do so by including measurement. ie: Id like to loose 5lbs by February or instead of eating a whole package of cookies each week, see if you can spread that out to two weeks.. Measurable outcomes with your food can be very rewarding. You also can track your training performance with keeping track of your nutrition and performance with your strength, endurance, times, races etc.

Attainable . You can set ambitious goals, but make sure that you break down the goals into attainable and reachable steps. If you are going out and may be tempted by desserts or drinks then bring your own and share your healthy food with others. "A" stands for Attitude so ask yourself "what will it take to make that goal happen"?

Realistic . Goals can't just be attainable but they must also be realistic. Realistic goals aren't just those goals that you're able to attain; but also goals that you're willing to attain. Have your BIG goals have small ones along the way and that way you will set yourself up for success.

Timely . Finally, a good goal is one that has a time frame. Rather than simply stating that you want to lose 15 pounds, or go to the gym 4x/ week, make sure that you put a realistic date on your goals. Which date would you like to achieve your weight loss by? What days and times of the week will you go to the gym? Leaving a goal to vague can leave us with a "way out" or goals that lead to a lack of progress.

Take time this New Year and really think through what goals you truly want, with purpose and passion. Make sure you are willing to achieve this in a S.M.A.R.T. way.
