The
Sandia Science & Technology Park (SS&TP) is a 300+ acre master-planned technology community. Affiliated with Sandia National Laboratories and adjacent to Kirtland Air Force Base, companies have access to world-class facilities, technologies, scientists, and engineers.
The results of an economic impact analysis conducted every two years by the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG), assessed the Park's economic impact from its inception in May 1998 through the end of 2015. The new, independent report highlights that the SS&TP has benefitted the local economy for nearly 19 years through job creation, increases in state and local tax revenues, and higher-than-average wages for its employees when compared with the average wage in the Albuquerque metro area.

Bayer and Versant Ventures Invest $225-million US to Commercialize Stem Cell Technology Through BlueRock Therapeutics

Versant Ventures
announced an investment of $225-million US to launch BlueRock Therapeutics, a next-generation regenerative medicine company focused on breakthrough stem cell technology treatments. The announcement marks one of the largest series A financing rounds in history for a biotech company.
The company's primary operations will be based at MaRS, focused on regenerating heart muscles in patients who have suffered a heart attack or those who suffer from chronic heart failure.
With one of the highest concentrations of stem cell researchers in the world, Toronto is a key market for regenerative medicine. It is also where stem cells were first discovered.

uCity Square has attracted a Boston-area firm to its newest building at 3675 Market Street in University City, Philadelphia. Wexford Science + Technology and the University City Science Center announced today that Cambridge Innovation Center, also known as CIC, will occupy 127,000 square feet and bring its successful model of supporting innovation and entrepreneurship to Philadelphia. CIC will join the Science Center at 3675 Market. There, the Science Center will relocate and expand its headquarters -- home to its nationally-recognized tech commercialization and business incubation programs -- by leasing 50,000 square feet.

Espace Carrière and Saint-Hyacinthe Technopole are jointly launching a program to support companies in their diversity and human resources management. They presented the modules
of this new initiative created as a result of a need expressed by companies in the Maskoutain territory.
Sprint Diversity is a business coaching program for hiring human resources managers in Maskoutain businesses. The program is four half-day training sessions and 14 hours of individual business coaching to help companies adapt their human resources practices to the current labor market environment.

Saudi Aramco and KAUST broke ground on the construction of a new state-of-the-art research center on Friday, December 16, with an expected completion date of mid-2019.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by H.E. Khalid Al-Falih, Saudi minister of energy, industry and mineral resources and vice-chairman of the KAUST board of trustees; Amin H. Nasser, Saudi Aramco president and CEO; Jean-Lou Chameau, KAUST president; Nadhmi Al-Nasr, KAUST executive vice president for administration and finance; members of the KAUST board of trustees; and a delegation of government, academic and business dignitaries.

Facebook Inc's hardware development division on Wednesday announced a new partnership with Waterloo, Harvard, Princeton and 14 other universities intended to allow swifter collaboration on technology research projects.
The agreement between Facebook's Building 8 and the universities comes as the social media company seeks to find new revenue streams in virtual reality and artificial intelligence, after the company signaled last month it had begun to hit some advertising growth limits on its network of 1.8 billion monthly active users.
Research partnerships between universities and companies typically take nine to 12 months to facilitate, but the new agreement will allow for collaboration on new ideas within weeks, said Regina Dugan, who joined the company in April to run the new Building 8 unit.

A Look Back at 2016's Startup Sector
When I started covering the entrepreneurial scene back in 2000, the word startup wasn't commonly used. Instead, spinoff was a catchword because many emerging companies were products of university research and development, particularly in the biotech sector.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and developmental biologist Jamie Thomson had recently made history by isolating the first human embryonic stem cell line. It was among the many notable achievements pushing UW-Madison to the forefront of what Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation's former director Carl Gulbrandsen liked to call "the new economy." Lauded on the cover of Time magazine in 2001 for his revolutionary science, Thomson founded Cellular Dynamics International to produce stem cells used in drug discovery and toxicity testing. That same year, the Wisconsin Technology Council was created by a bipartisan act of the governor and Legislature.

Jacob Thekkekara and Visakh Sasikumar proudly show off the tricycle they have designed. We are at the IITM Research Park in Taramani, Chennai, and Jacob pedals a short distance on the tricycle to show how easy it is. Of course, the tricycle is not carrying any load. But, still with the pedal-assist technology that the duo has provided on it, they say it should be a cinch to move around with the 250-kg payload that it can carry.
The two have founded a company Pi Beam Labs, incubated at the IITM Research Park, which has sold one vehicle, to French multinational tyre maker Michelin for use in its plant near Chennai, to move materials inside the factory. It has orders for at least 30 more, which it hopes to fulfil in the next few months.

Toshiba Medical Research Institute USA Inc. has leased space to build a medical research center at 1812 Ashland Ave., the new $65 million building in the Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins in East Baltimore.
The center will showcase next-generation imaging technology for use in research partnerships with the
Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Medical Campus. It is expected to open in April and will take about 4,000 square feet in the new building.
