Game Two -- Carolina Panthers 46, San Francisco 49ers 27
San Francisco
quarterback Blaine Gabbert bolted up the middle for a touchdown and would throw for two more, but it was not enough, as Carolina throttled the 49ers, 46-27, in the Panthers' home opener in Charlotte, NC. Gabbert also threw two interceptions.

Game Three -- Seattle Seahawks 37, San Francisco 49ers 18
San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde busted up the middle for one of his two touchdowns and gained 103 yards for the afternoon but most came after the game was long-decided, as the 49ers would lose, 37-18. The 49ers are off to a 1-2 start for a fourth straight season

|
The San Jose Earthquakes will
host an open tryout on Sunday, Jan. 29. The tryout will take place from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at San Jose City College, located at 2100 Moorpark Avenue in San Jose.
Participants will have the opportunity to make the Earthquakes' First Team or affiliate Premier Development League side Burlingame Dragons FC. The tryout will consist of three 90-minute heats, with the players competing in round robin scrimmages. Scouts from the Earthquakes and affiliates will be onsite to evaluate players. Aquira DeCosta was awarded the David "Scoop" Jackson MVP Award for the prestigious West Coast Jamboree Platinum Division following a performance of 18 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and two blocks in a 63-41 championship win over Salesian-Richmond. DeCosta, ranked by some recruiting services as the top junior in the country, recorded double-doubles in all four of the Rams' Jamboree games. The 6-foot-2 DeCosta was the Cal-Hi Sports State Freshman of the Year in 2014-15 and the State Sophomore of the year last season.

17 Sports Stories
to Follow in 2017

Last week we listed the top 16 Sports Prevarications of 2016. In the interest of equal time for 2017, here are some sports stories that will be front and center in the coming months.
1. The Los Angeles Olympic bid goes to a vote of the IOC in Lima, Peru on September 13, 2017 and Budapest and Paris are the competitors. How many billions of dollars will it cost and where is the money coming from, especially if Los Angeles wins the bid?
2. Cord-cutting by fans and plugging into new methods of consuming sports:
Is this generation going to spend more time looking down than up when they go to a live sporting event or will they just bypass the event altogether? The smart phone is well on its way to becoming the Ultimate Arena in 2017.
3. The Golden State Warriors begin the sales process of selling their new Chase Center in San Francisco to their fans. How much will tickets cost to the best show in the NBA? (They have been mum on the possibility of PSLs.)
4. Security and safety at sports events: We live in a world where sports venues have become targets.
How authorities effectively create secure fan environments without taking away the openness of our sporting events and venues is key. The process of going to a game will become more complicated and expensive for teams, fans and event operators.
5. The Cal Athletic Department: The deep financial deficit caused by the Memorial Stadium retrofit may cause cuts in Golden Bear team sports.
6. MLB Revenue Sharing: Baseball has five years of labor peace with the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement with
the players union. The Oakland A's revenue sharing agreement, which brought in over $30 million last year, will be phased out over the next four years. The A's will now have a new form of Moneyball to deal with.
7. Raiders of the Lost Park: Will Team-Turnaround be announcing a new home in Oakland, Las Vegas, Inglewood, Santa Clara or a new location?
Without a current, viable new stadium plan Oakland could lose its second pro sports franchise. The Raiders will be kicking off the 2017 football season at the
Oakland Alameda County Coliseum
as NFL owners continue to figure out the Rubik's cube that is the Raiders relocation puzzle. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like the Black Hole.
8. Oakland A's new ballpark location: Do they make a concrete decision in 2017 as to where they are going to build? If it is Howard Terminal, you'll be enjoying games at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum for many years to come as they deal with the cost and complexity of building at Howard Terminal.
9. Management changes with the San Francisco 49ers: What will their rebuilding strategy be and look like? Who will be creating and implementing it?
10. San Francisco 49ers dwindling attendance at Levi's Stadium: E
mpty seats speak louder than any leather-lunged fan. If fans don't believe their investment in seat licenses are living up to the promise, you'll see many more listed on secondary ticket sites for resale!
11. There will be at least one Championship parade in the Bay Area in 2017.
12. Ongoing CTE fallout in all contact sports:
The basis of the sports business is player participation. As science improves on diagnosing head injuries, every family associated with heavy contact sports will be monitoring the risk/reward of their children's participation.
13. Players and coaches taking public positions on societal and political issues:
From John Carlos and Tommie Smith's black-gloved protest in the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick taking a knee and Steve Kerr's comments this past season, active involvement in social causes will increase significantly in 2017.
14. Amazon ramps up its quest to purchase professional sports' broadcast rights: Who will be first to take the cash?
15. NFL draft: How many players from Bay Area schools will be selected to move on? How high will Christian McCaffrey of Stanford be selected? Who will the 49ers take with the second pick?
16. Will Donald Trump and Barack Obama square off on a winner-take-all head-to-head golf game to decide the future of some major piece of legislation mired in bureaucracy?
17. Which Bay Area college basketball program, men's or women's, will go furthest in March Madness?

The very first football game I ever watched, at the age of five, was Super Bowl XV. It was the Oakland Raiders versus the Philadelphia Eagles. My uncle Sanny, a die-hard Raider fan and grandpa, were watching. My uncle educated me quickly on how they wore silver and black, that they were scary, mean and tough. I watched in awe as they won and became Super Bowl champs. I knew then that the Raiders were my team.
A couple of years went by and enter Marcus Allen. Allen was a God on the football field as nobody could catch him. He would jump over the entire line to get a touchdown and was amazing. I witnessed Super Bowl XVIII versus the Washington Redskins and saw the greatest running touchdown ever by Allen and they won the Super Bowl again. I soon began to bleed Silver and Black and there was no turning back.
In elementary school I kept a constant watch but the chances of someone taking me to a game were zero. My neighbors, dad and uncle were die-hard Oakland Raider fans. These guys were tough, old school blue collar "chicanos." They had HUGE Oakland Raiders signs in their garage, which they said they had ripped off from stadium walls at games in Oakland while they were drunk and then took home. They would tell me stories of the Oakland Raiders and how OAKLAND was their real home. I started to understand the rich history of the OAKLAND Raiders and how they became this tough, blue collar team. I embraced their stories and they made me even more of a fan.
Fast forward to 1995, the year the Raiders returned to Oakland. This was like a dream come true. My chances of going to a game were now possible. On November 1, 1998 I watched my first game, versus Seattle, and I never stopped.
In 2010, the year after I started my business, Inkies Tattoo Studio, I married my die-hard Raider fan-wife, Sophia, so I decided to buy season club tickets every year with her as a new tradition.

My tattoo business was taking off so I decided to get a billboard at the Oakland Coliseum. It drew a couple of physical trainers from the Raiders to get tattooed. Soon wide receiver Louis Murphy (No. 18) wanted to come in.
At first I was nervous but when I met Louis Murphy, he was super cool. I said to myself, it doesn't get better than this.
Well, it did. Next came Rolando McClain (No. 55). And after that, Dez Bryant and Oakland's own Beast Mode, Marshawn Lynch. By that time I had gotten used to hanging out with players and talking to them.
A few years later Mr. Charles Woodson came back to Oakland. He's my most favorite player EVER, hands down. I had just opened a sushi restaurant called Aniki's Sushi in Fremont, with a good friend. Aniki's Sushi was an instant hit and I wanted Charles to come in. He was hosting a wine event in Napa and I invited him to my businesses and the rest is history. After his first tattoo session he kept coming back and he then came to Aniki's Sushi. We soon served Charles Woodson Wines and we named a roll after him, with ingredients hand-picked by the Goat himself, the #24 Woodson Hall of Fame Roll.
I have made many good friends within the Raiders organization, as well as with the players. Ben Heeney, Mario Edwards Jr., and Brynden Trawick have gotten work at Inkies recently and have eaten at Aniki's Sushi. After the season is over, Jihad Ward and Sebastian Janikowski will be stopping by.
I feel like I'm living a Raiders fan's Ultimate Dream. God is good and I am truly blessed. I'm so proud of our team right now. I believe Raider fans are the greatest fans in the world and the Oakland Raiders is the best organization in the NFL. The Raiders even decided to send my wife and me to a full expense-paid trip to this year's Pro Bowl!
What is really going on here? I keep telling myself it can't get better than this.. but for some reason, I think it will. Keep it coming boys. This is Raider Nation.
