Peace and Comfort

The weather has been delightful! Perfect for outdoor decorating. Now, we can move inside to start making our homes festive!

I enjoy walking through Countryside, checking in with customers, seeing them get such joy from being here, around the flowers, plants and decorations.

Recently I ran into Lisa Orris. A long time customer, she had stopped me to let me know how good it makes her feel to be here. We see her often on her days off, "I come in to get recharged. The flowers, plants and beautiful displays remind me that life goes on and beauty is everywhere." Lisa lost her 26 year-old son in a tragic motorcycle accident in August of 2015. "When I'm feeling down I come here and wander around to lift my spirits. It is very therapeutic ."

Realizing how deeply we touch others with our  passion and love of flowers and plants is quite moving. I get caught up in the business of doing business, at times forgetting what got us here in the first
place - natures beauty.

I am grateful for the caring and compassionate staff we have at Countryside. They are attentive to clients needs and more importantly their feelings. It pleases me that Lisa is able to find a little peace when she visits Countryside. As a local pastor of Hope Church here in Crystal Lake, Lisa share's her peace and hope with others who struggle at this time of year with her "Blue Christmas" service which will be held Sunday, December 17th at 5 p.m.

JR, Lori and I hope this season shines brightly, brings peace and comfort to all of our family, friends, staff and clients.

Plants with Winter Interests
The landscape department will be making some suggestions of plants to keep in mind for next year's installation in the last two e-news letters of 2017.

Here are some ideas of plants to get us through those months that can be dreary.

Winterberry:
Is a holly that can be used in moister areas in partial to full sun. You need to mix male and female varieties for pollination. The berries can be used as Holiday decoration and the birds will enjoy them as well. Watch with pets. They can be toxic.

Oak Leaf Hydrangeas:
The peeling bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape. The leaves give it it's name as they are shaped like oak leaves. Flowering happens a little earlier than many hydrangeas.

Ornamental Grasses:
In the winter, ornamental grasses contrast nicely against evergreens, woody shrubs and trees. They provide shelter for critters as well.
