SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AVAILABLE TO A PRESBYTERY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

by Debbie Ingram Schmidt,
Associate for Spiritual Leader Development

Presbyterians value education. Worldwide, Presbyterians have a legacy of offering educational opportunities, especially to those who are unable to receive an education because of financial need, gender, or disability. Robert F. and Rosa M. Ferguson share in that legacy.

Robert and Rosa Ferguson were members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Baltimore Presbytery. Rosa was also a long-time educator in Baltimore City and County. As an expression of their commitment to their church and to the importance of education, they generously gave the resources to fund an annual scholarship for one high school student from our presbytery.  They specified that priority should be given to students whose family income is modest.

The Ferguson scholarship provides $5,000 for one year of college. Priority is given to entering college freshmen. However, a student who has received the scholarship may reapply for subsequent years. The scholarship if offered to one student each year.

To apply for the scholarship, students must:
                Rank in the top one-third of his or her class;
                Demonstrate involvement in school or community
                service activities;
                Demonstrate strong moral character;
                Be an active communicant member of a congregation
       in the Presbytery of Baltimore;
       Be enrolling in an accredited college or university.

The student must also complete an application form, provide a copy of his or her scholarship transcript, and arrange for character references from their pastor, a high school faculty member or counselor, and a third person who is not related to the student. The parents or guardian of the student must also provide evidence of financial need through disclosure of person financial information and copies of tax forms from previous years.

A committee made up of members of the presbytery meets annually to determine the recipient of the scholarship. To apply for the scholarship, use the application form found on the presbytery website: http://images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2832/ferguson201517.pdf

The deadline to submit all information regarding the scholarship is May 15th.  If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Schmidt: [email protected]
