Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 12 11 17

P arents and Guardians,

Each semester seems to go by faster and faster, and this year is no exception. With only a week and a half to go, Semester Exams begin this week at LHS. In order to spread out the exams for students, we will be testing over the final four days of the semester. We kick off our exam days this Friday morning with our tradition of Flapjacks for Finals. LHS Staff will be cooking for students before school starts, and chocolate chip pancakes will be in high demand as we kick off exams with a little fun.

Our exam schedule is as follows:
Friday, Dec. 15th - 3rd and 7th period
Monday, Dec. 18th - 2nd and 6th period
Tuesday, Dec. 19th - 1st and 5th period
Wednesday, Dec. 20th - 4th and 8th and Early Release

LHS will run a modified bell schedule on each of these days so that students attend most of their other classes (except Wednesday which is an Early Release), but have extended time during the periods they have an exam.

I hope you have a great week.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

MySchoolBucks Convenience Fee
MySchoolBucks, the district's online meal prepayment program, has provided notification regarding an increase in the convenience fee paid by parents using the online payment feature. The fee will be increasing from $1.95 per payment to $2.49 per payment and will be effective as of December 11, 2017. This increase is the result of an increase in card scheme fees. The district does not receive any convenience fee funds from MySchoolBucks.
In light of the increase, the district contacted MySchoolBucks. They agreed to increase the maximum payment from $120 per deposit to $240 per deposit. This payment deposit increase is effective immediately. You may contact MySchoolBucks directly by telephone at 855.832.5226 or via email at [email protected] .

Student Recognition

LHS Bowling
The Lovejoy Bowling team swept the competition during last week's match against Berkner High School.

Boy's Varsity won their match 14-1 with high scores bowled by Sophomore Mason Melendez (223) & Senior Michael Stephens (225) while Boy's JV won their match 15-0.

Girl's Varsity won their match 15-0 with high scores bowled by Juniors Sarah Nash (182) & Kaitlyn Cinek (183) and Girl's JV also won their match 15-0.

We are very proud of all the bowlers, especially the 4 bowlers that qualified for their Letterman Jacket during the match!  Please congratulate Sam Dieterle , JR Frazier , Andrew Khalil , and Allie Streack.

LHS Volleyball
Shanel Bramschreiber and Rachel Langs have been named  2017-18 Volleyball Legacy All Stars by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

LHS Fishing
Freshman Phenoms Part The Red...river that is! John Armstrong and Josh Bittlestone bested over 250 other teams to take first place at the THSBA Texoma tournament this past Saturday. With their victory, the two man team takes over the Angler(s) Of The Year (AOY) points total from Seniors Kellen Worley and Trey Johnson. After winning the team title for the first two season tournaments, Lovejoy stepped back as a team finishing 3rd as a over all. This still keeps them on the top spot for Team Of The Year title.

LHS Wrestling

Lovejoy men's varsity defeats Plano East, 48-30:
Our men performed beyond their years once again, defeated a very large 6A school in Plano East. The men were led by pins from all of the following:  Senior Michael Shaw, Junior Johnny Dorlon, Sophomores Hunter Duncan, Joe Ridgeway, and Grant Sessions; and Freshmen Ralph Rucker, Jakob Underwood, and Zack Valentine!

Above:  Sophomore Hunter Duncan works for the fall in his match against Plano East.

Our JV wrestlers all competed well, with each winning at least one match.  They were led by Freshman Jack McKinney, who finished 2-0 with two falls!
For complete results from this dual, click this link: Lovejoy defeats Plano East, 48-30

Texas Ladies Classic:
We had four girls wrestle this past weekend at the Texas Ladies Classic and once again, we saw some great improvement and great competition.  Sophomore Alex LeFort led the team, finishing the tournament with another great effort, bringing home the bronze medal on her way to winning six out of seven matches!  Junior Morgan Elvin also wrestled a great tournament.  Elvin defeated a state placer among her four wins to place 4th .

Above:  Sophomore Alex LeFort, shown in an earlier season match, finished with an outstanding 6-1 record and the bronze medal!

Junior Lilly Musselman and Freshman Charis Vela both finished the tournament with wins and showed good improvement.

If you would like to view the results of all of our matches, click on the following link to access the online version on track wrestling:

Frisco Reedy Six-way:
Our Varsity men wrestled at Reedy High School in Frisco.  This was a "dual" formatted event in which we wrestled our complete dual lineup versus the other five teams in succession.  I always like this format as it keeps all our wrestlers involved and provides many opportunities for all of our wrestlers to step up and be the "hero" of any one dual.  We ran into some tough competition, facing several of the area's best.  Lovejoy finished the day with a 2-3 record, with wins against Wylie and Justin Northwest.  Individually, the Leopards were led by Juniors Johnny Dorlon and Austen Shelley, who both finished the day with a 4-1 record.

Below:  Austen Shelley working for a breakdown on his way to a 4-1 record.

For results from each dual, click here.

LHS JV Girls Basketball
The JV Black team won the Consolation Championship of the Princeton Tournament going 3-1 on the weekend. The Leopards opened up the tournament with a convincing 48-27 win over John Paul II. In the second round, the Leopards fell to Krum by a score of 50-31. The Leopards bounced back with two wins to end the tournament with wins over Caddo Mills 50-21 and Keller Central 38-33. The team was led in scoring by Julia Brochu who averaged 11.8 points per game. The JV Red team finished in 2nd place of the Consolation Bracket in the Princeton Tournament going 2-2 on the weekend. The Leopards fell to Keller Central and Dallas Thunder. The Leopards had wins over Krum and Frisco Lebanon Trail. The team was led in scoring by Layla Myers-Healey and Madison Paulus.

LHS Varsity Girls Basketball
The Lady Leopards won the championship of the Princeton Tournament going 3-0 on the weekend. The Leopards defeated Lubbock Christian 52-33, Frisco Lebanon Trail 54-34, and Krum 54-35. Lovejoy was led in scoring during the tournament by Taylor Meixelsperger who averaged 14 points per game. Kaylee Rekieta led the Leopards with 4.7 assists/game and 5.7 steals/game. Carsen McFadden led the team with 4.3 rebounds/game. After winning the tournament, the Leopards improved their overall record to 13-5. The Leopards will begin district play on Tuesday at home vs Highland Park. Both JV teams will play at 5:30pm followed by the varsity at 7:00pm.

LHS Band
Out of over 1000 entries in the region, the following students have earned a place in the region band. As you can see below, many have also qualified for the Area level of competition in January that may certify them for All State. This is the most students we have had qualify at the region level and area level in the school's history!!
This year, again, we are going into the Area auditions with one All-Stater already in the bag. Jack Supan has already earned a place in the All-State Jazz band on guitar for the second year!

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on December 6th, January 18th, February 13th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.
