Dear Athletes,

I've decided to put some work in on my back squat. Putting work in is actually Plan B. Plan A was to ignore that back squats exist, not do them, and watch for improvement. I'm just not seeing the results I was hoping for, so I'm moving on.*

Tom has been sharing some of the  theory behind the practice we've been doing at the Wednesday morning sessions, so I thought I'd share with you how I've found them helpful regarding some of my other training.

Mobility: TMT's Strength and Performance class is restorative for me. The mobility work we do leaves me feeling a lot better afterwards than when I walk in. Sagittal plane work (as in traditional squats and  deadlifts) can be hard on my body. The rotational movements and spinal mobility keep me feeling good.

Core College: I have had issues in the past with back pain that can be traced to a failure to brace my core under load. Being consistent with dedicated core work has kept my back in great shape for most of the last year.

Additionally, the work on the Abmat using full range of motion has been helpful to me in finding a braced position for my squat...finding the tuck of my pelvis and the connection between my lower rib cage and hips for power and stability.

The squats are still a work in progress, but it's a new year, so what the heck. Good enough place to start.

Shout out to Jennifer Vogelgesgang Blake (Coach JVB) who coaches me at the Movement Minneapolis. She did the video below** and gave me 2-3 ideas that made a yuuuge difference in my squat in 10 minutes. She's magic.

*Plan A didn't work for pullups, either.
**Pro tip: Plan video days for when you're wearing your favorite new leggings.

Have you participated in Strength and Performance, and noticed carryover into other stuff you're doing, whether in sport or daily life? Email me at laura.schmieg@gmail.com. I'd love to feature you.
