San Francisco 49ers 26 v. Houston Texans 16
|
Charismatic 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, pictured above in an earlier game, has transformed the 49ers with his infectious confidence and skill. Sunday's performance against Houston was another example, as he complected 20 of 33 passes for 334 yards and one touchdown. The 49ers mid-season acquisition from the New England Patriots, for San Francisco's original 2018 second-round pick, looks like a spectacular success for general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan. Since becoming the 49ers starting quarterback, Jimmy G. is 2-0. Photo by Ed Jay. |

|
San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Elvis Dumervil (58) knocked Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage out of the game, with what would be diagnosed as a concussion. Backup quarterback T.J. Yates finished up for Houston, who kept the game competitive and passed for two touchdowns. Photo by Michael Zagaris.

|
Nose tackle Earl Mitchell (90) and his fellow defenders stopped Houston on a critical fourth-and-one late in the game. San Francisco's stingy defense held Houston to just 90 yards on the ground, the longest a 15-yard scamper by backup quarterback T. J. Yates. Photo by Michael Zagaris. |

|
Left to right, 49ers running back Raheem Mostert (not in uniform), running backs Matt Breida (22) and Carlos Hyde (28) and fullback Kyle Juszczyk (44) rest on the bench while the defense is on field. Breida and Hyde would run for 27 and 78 yards respectively, while Juszczyk picked up 64 yards receiving. Photo by Michael Zagaris. |

Oakland Raiders in the Community
|
The Raiders Foundation Winter STEM Holiday Party, presented by Verizon, brought children and their families together who are currently served by the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro, to celebrate the holiday season aboard the historic USS Hornet on Monday evening, Dec. 4. Guests, Raiders players and Raiderettes participated in Spoon Catapults and Scytale Coding activities from the USS Hornet's STEM-to-Stern Jr. Program. After dinner, guests were treated to a docent tour to learn how the USS Hornet used science, technology, engineering and math during its active days as well as now as a living museum. Oakland A's
The Oakland A's agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit on a two-year contract through the 2019 season with a club option for 2020, the club announced recently.
Petit was 5-2 with four saves, a 2.76 ERA and a .207 opponents batting average in a career-high 60 games, including one start, with the Los Angeles Angels last year. He struck out 101 and walked just 18 in 91.1 innings for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.61. The 33-year-old right-hander pitched 87.1 innings in relief, which led all Major League relievers. Petit tied for sixth among American League relievers in strikeouts (96) and was 10th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.33).
General manager
David Forst:
"Petit was a guy we talked about from the beginning of this offseason if not before. It was obvious he was the perfect guy for what we need because of his ability to do anything. When you've got a young starting staff and guys who still have developing to do, supporting them in the bullpen is a priority. We knew that Petit was a target that made a lot of sense for his ability to go multiple innings, back-to-back days, and to spot start."
Yusmeiro Petit:
"I feel good coming back [to the Bay Area]. It's really nice to come to an organization that makes you feel comfortable."

San Jose Earthquakes
|
The San Jose Earthquakes have signed United States U-20 goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski to a Homegrown Player contract. He becomes the third product of the Quakes Academy to sign with the First Team, following Tommy Thompson and Nick Lima ahead of the 2014 and 2017 seasons, respectively. "JT has emerged as one of the brightest goalkeeper prospects in the nation," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. "He established himself as a regular with the U.S. U-20s and we're excited about his potential as a professional. He is also further proof of the strides that our youth system has made and expect more Academy products to follow in his footsteps." Marcinkowski, 20, has competed for Georgetown University for the last three years, where he helped them win the BIG EAST Conference Championship twice. During his time at GU, Marcinkowski led the Hoyas to a 34-15-7 record, allowing just 49 goals in 56 starts (0.84 GAA) and keeping 21 shutouts. For more information, visit: sjearthquakes.com |

Sonoma Raceway
|
More than 300 Sonoma Valley children enjoyed a day of holiday cheer under sunny skies at Sonoma Raceway on Saturday at the 13th annual Race to the Holidays Children's Christmas Party. The raceway teamed up with the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) to host the children and their families at the event, which featured caroling, refreshments, a race car display, balloon animals, face painting and a visit from Santa Claus, who arrived via a Schell-Vista Fire Department fire truck. The event has drawn more than 3,000 children since its inception in 2005 and culminated with Santa Claus presenting each child with a full bag of toys and a stuffed animal, as well as a toiletry kit courtesy of Verizon. Children ranged in age from newborn to 12 years old. For more information, visit sonomaraceway.com. Photo: Joe Jacobson. |

Sports Star --
Haley Van Dyke
Campolindo / Moraga
-- Senior -- Basketball
|
Haley Van Dyke's 2016-17 stats are impressive: 23.9 points, 15.4 rebounds, 4.9 steals, 3.8 assists, and 3.5 blocked shots per game. The numbers are dazzling, but especially so for a girl who proves you don't have to start grinding year-round at age 10 to develop into an elite player. Van Dyke didn't take basketball seriously until she was a sophomore and in two short years, she's elevated her game to the Pac-12 level.
College destination: Washington.

Xmas will bring renewed riches for Jerry Jones
|
For Jimmy Garoppollo, is a boost in pay on its way?
|
Super Bowl 52 is Sunday, February 4, 2018
|
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Titanic Tuesday, Free Friday and Small Business Saturday. Clearly we are in the full contact Holiday spending season. The sports world plays a major role in this December deluge of disposable dollars.
As we know, the color of fluid that runs through the world of sports is green. Lately there has been a tidal wave of cash breaking on sports shores everywhere. If you are looking for suggestions for holiday gifting, this overview may help.
Christmas bonus!
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was steaming and screaming about the five year contract extension for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The commish's new deal will total $200 million with a private jet for life.....with the fuel bills paid.
Mr. Jones is in the midst of a Cowboy Conundrum both on-and-off the field. When he slides down the banister to his Texas-sized Xmas tree he will see a box marked Net Asset Value. When the spring-loaded box pops opens, the $4.5 billion value of his Cowboys should put a smile on his face and commissioner Goodell's contract in his rear view mirror for the holidays.
Commissioner's coin
Forty million a year for the NFL main man. Here is how the rest of the Big Four stack up.
NBA - Adam Silver -- $10 million annually
NHL - Gary Bettman -- $10 million annually
MLB - Rob Manfred -- $11 million annually
You're fired!
I'm not sure where you can purchase a golden parachute but these college football coaches are going to have a very Merry Holiday Season even though all their logoed wardrobes are now on the way to the attic. Buyouts for fired college football coaches include:
$12.3 million for Todd Graham of ASU
$12.2 million for Jim Mora of UCLA
$10.4 million for Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M
$8.3 million for Butch Jones of Tennessee
$6.6 million for Mike Riley of Nebraska
$5.9 million for Bret Bielema of Arkansas
Tag, you're it!
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will see his salary go from $820,077 this season to a direct deposit of $23 million if he get's the franchise tag from his new team in 2018. That's Patriotism. If the 49ers sign him to a long term contract, Jimmy G could be banking real money.
Gotta be the shoes
If you can't get by this holiday without a new pair of kicks, how about the Christian Louboutin Louis Orlato Hi-Top leather trainers at $3,295 or the Red Versace Idol Tonal Palazzo Leather Hi-Tops? Yours for only $1,175, not including socks.
If your little hoopsters wanna be like Steph and you're on a budget, try Under Armour Kids Preschool Curry 3Zero basketball shoes at $49.98.
Psst! Hey buddy, need a ticket?
If you are heading for Super Bowl LII (52) in balmy Minnesota, you might as well go with the NFL Platinum package: Field level seat, pregame party, Delta 360 Lounge and access to the field after the game. It's only $13,499 per seat.
Looking for something a bit warmer? Try the NBA All-Star game on February 18, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and ask for Loge 112, Row 4. Four tickets will only cost you $46,096.
Want to see the Giants and the A's in the 2018 Bay Bridge series? Put this stocking stuffer under your tree -- four bleacher seats for the game at the Coliseum for $44, on March 25.
Auction items in sports
Babe Ruth's 1920 Yankees jersey sold for $4.4 million. You could find the buyer and see if you can break the record, after you win next week's Powerball.
Running low on cash and looking for the perfect gift?
Make sure you reserve tickets for the A's game at the Coliseum on April 17 when all the tickets will be free. It's the A's gift to their fans, to celebrate the franchise's 50th Anniversary season in Oakland.
Happy Holidays and always remember, the best things in life are free!
Andy Dolich, President, Dolich Consulting -- Dolich has held executive positions in the NFL (San Francisco 49ers), NBA (Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers), MLB (Oakland A's), NHL (Washington Capitals) Pro Soccer and Lacrosse.
