IFSPT General Meeting in Bern:
Are You Ready?

The IFSPT will hold its Biennial General Meeting this fall in Bern, Switzerland. Following on the heels of a successful meeting in South Africa in 2013, the 2015 General Meeting is hosted by Sportfisio Switzerland, our member organization.
The General Meeting, which is attended by member organization delegates, will be held at the Bern Expo on Thursday, November 19, from 14:00 to 17:00 and will be followed by a delegate dinner.
Up to five additional members of each member organization may attend by
prior reservation with the IFSPT Secretary,
Maria Constantinou.
Following the General Meeting, The First World Congress of Sports Physical Therapy will be held November 20-21 at BernExpo.
It will be our pleasure to see as many members of our Member Organisations attend The First World Congress on Sports Physical Therapy as possible. Please let all your colleagues know!
The International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy is pleased to announce its participation, in conjunction with the Swiss Sports Physiotherapy Association (Sportfisio) and the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM), the first World Congress of Sports Physical Therapy!

The aim of the conference is to present the current evidence on Return to Play criteria and guidelines in different areas, where sports physical therapy plays a major role in helping athletes to come back at their highest level after injury or surgery.
A special presentation by Dr. Nicola Phillips, president of the IFSPT, will focus on the results of the current IFSPT project, the Return to Play Survey.

A "Mario-Eye" View of the Women's Cup
 Forest fires prevail for some days in British Columbia, and now the sky over Vancouver is not as blue as usual. But smoke is not stopping the invasion of US fans, with
the Stars and Stripes colors dominating the streets of this Canadian City.
Today is the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015! The USWNT (US Women National Team) is looking to put a third star on their jersey: on the way, "Nadeshiko", Japan, the current World Champion. The USWNT lost against this same team four years ago in Germany, and captain Carli Lloyd and her girls are seeking revenge today. The showdown is scheduled at 4 pm at BC Place stadium, filled with more than 53.000 spectators, mostly US fan: a real home game for the USWNT ahead. Referee Kateryna Monzul from Ukraine blows the whistle and the match starts.
At the exit to the field, Royal Canadian Mounted Police wait for their entrance.
 
Smoke is also in the stadium, the sight from the seats is not 100% clear...Only the US girls are playing, and the Japanese players seem almost watching the combination play of the opponents.
3:0 for USWNT after 14 minutes: unbelievable... and even more incredible, Carli Lloyd shoots from the halfway line (!) and scores her 3rd goal: 4:0 after 16 minutes (fastest hat-trick in World Cup history). The match is basically finished, with the USWNT girls literally on fire -maybe inspired by the British Columbia wildfires.
Eventually the match ended with a 5:2 win by the Americans, and Carli Lloyd won not only the "Player of the Match" award, but also the "Golden Ball Award" as the tournament's best player, in maybe the best performance ever of a US soccer team.

NIGERIA OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (NOC)
HOLDS INAUGURAL MEETING IN LAGOS, NIGERIA
BAKARE UMMUKULTHOUM APPOINTED TO MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC COMMISSION

The Nigeria Olympic Committee has appointed IFSPT delegate Bakare Ummukulthoum as a member of its medical and scientific commission. Bakare, whose appointment is a first for a physiotherapist on the medical commission of her home country, is very keen to achieve the mandate of the NOC with her new team and take on the tasks ahead.
The fourteen person commission was created by the NOC as part of the actualization of the mandate of the International Olympic Committee to optimize performance and the protect athletes' health using scientific based evidence and best practices. The commission is largely made up of experts in the various fields of sports medicine who have come together to work with a united front in achieving the terms of reference of the appointment. The commission was formally inaugurated alongside others by the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr Habu Gumel, on the 18th of June, 2015.
The commission, led by its chairman Dr. Akin Amao, a veteran sports medicine practitioner, held its inaugural meeting in Lagos on the 4th of August 2015. The deliberations were largely centred around reviewing the terms of reference, mapping out the Program of Activities blueprint and goal-oriented implementation strategies to actualize the tasks at hand.

Bakare Ummukulthoum is a sports physiotherapist with over a decade of experience on the local and international stage and she hopes to bring her vast professional network on board in achieving desired goals in this new portfolio. She is currently the secretary of the Nigeria Sports Physiotherapy Association and has played key roles in co-coordinating and facilitating her member country activities as well as co-operation with IFSPT. We wish her all the best in this endeavour.

CONGRESS REPORT:
SPORT PHYSIO CONGRESS, SOUTH AFRICA
THE JUVENILE ATHLETE

Instant Ice was the platinum sponsor for the congress. Through their generous sponsorship, we were able to host this world class congress at a reasonable price.
Day two started with a very early ethics discussion with Helen Milson with some relevant ethical situations that she has been placed in in her career as a Sport Physiotherapist with teams and athletes. Barb then followed it up with a talk about overuse injuries and why our youth is at risk.
Andrian Penzhorn had an interesting presentation about Supplement use in the Juvenile athlete, something we are all dealing with on a daily basis. Linda Doke, a multi winning endurance runner, then spoke about what she as an athlete goes through in preparation to be such an accomplished athlete. The talks were followed by taping workshops by Leuko (BSN medical). Unfortunately WP rugby players, who were supposed to be the taping models, couldn't make it...we apologize to the ladies who were looking forward to this...
A very busy second day ended with a lovely evening of the GEC hosting all our international speakers and Provincial Sport SIG chairman for a lovely dinner at a local restaurant, braving a very cold and windy walk along the beach...some team building is always good!

The last day of conferencing was packed with practical workshops run by Tanya Bell, Pierre Labuschagne from HiTech Therapy on Theraband and Dynamic Taping, Tracy Prowse with Exercise prescription for children, Helen on Proprioception and Barb on Building the female athlete, running consecutively from 8:00-17:00. Helen put our delegates through their paces and some of our local SIG chairman and SPT1 coordinators can be seen on our Facebook page showing off their skills...

The AGM of the Sports was held during lunch time on Saturday, with a record breaking 38 attendees. Each provincial chairman gave some feedback on their groups' activities and the struggles they are having. The current GEC: Ria Sandenbergh, Brent Grimsley and Carine van der Merwe were re-elected for another term and new members Riaz Rawoot and Noelle Bester were voted onto the GEC.

The GEC are having a Bosberaad with all provincial chairman and SPT1 leaders in Johannesburg at the end of October to discuss and plan Sports Physiotherapy provincial matters and lend support to the provinces and SPT1.
Projects in the pipeline for 2016 include a mini symposium series, running in different provinces, and involvement with the Argus Cycle Challenge to name a few. There will not be a Sport Physio Congress in 2017 due to the WCPT Congress that will be held in Cape Town during July 2017.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this 4th congress another huge success.

If you would like to take your skills to the world, this is the pathway you should choose! Registered International Sports Physical Therapists (RISPT) are immediately recognized as individuals possessing the knowledge, experience and skills to work in the worldwide field of sports.
While RISPT status does not license an individual in other countries, it does notify that the individual has achieved the highest level of qualification in his or her country.
Currently, members of the following member organizations are able to apply and receive acceptance immediately.
- Australia
- Denmark
- Ireland: Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Level 3 Accreditation in Sports Physiotherapy
- New Zealand: Complete the Specialisation Pathway through the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. Must complete specialisation in the Musculoskeletal Category. Applications for NZ Board MSK Specialty must have a sports focus with evidence provided.
- The Netherlands
- United Kingdom: Continuing Professional Development Level 3, Gold
- United States: APTA Sports Certified Specialist
Cost for registration is only 50 euros and is good for five years. Renewal is available for 20 euros. A certificate will be emailed to you in order that you may print and display it.

Advances in Sports Rehabilitation: Clinical Reasoning and Practice
First GISPT International Conference
After the success of the Italian edition in 2014, this year Advances in Sport Rehabilitation become an international event focused on physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation. The goal is to make this event, one of the main scientific events promoted with closer collaboration of the International Federation IFSPT, with most important national scientific networks as well as with the support of the national sport federation and, first of all, of Italian Olimpic National Commettee (CONI).
More than 30 speakers, including 10 international guests, will be the protagonists of the two days that will also include the presentation of important results of TURIN POSITION STATEMENT: LCA POST SURGERY REHABILITATION that will see the conclusion of its work the day before the conference.
The event will be enriched by parallel sessions promoted by some partners of the event, as well as by the presence of three poster sessions that will involve the best Post Graduate students in Sport Physical Therapy.
ASR2015 has been included in the events of Torino2015 - Capital European Sports. Next edition will be in 2017 with the aim to link to our conference also the Symposium and the GM IFSPT.
The scientific GISPT week will include by two courses and a free university conference held by some international guests attending the ASR2015.
We also set up a link with the FIRST WORLD SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY CONGRESS to be held in Bern on 20-21 November. GIS Sport will organize a transfer to attend this important conference, that will be linked to the Symposium and the GM IFSPT 2015.
