Happy Holidays

The Oliver Foundation Staff
and Teen Advisory Board

Good things do come in small packages, especially calories.  We just finished eating our Thanksgiving meal and now we are on the way to the next feast.

By all means enjoy your holiday meal, but remember the reason for the season is not to gain weight.  Most of us will put on a couple of pounds from Halloween to New Year's Day - but
it's not a given.
  • Serve your holiday meal on small plates.  Keep the high calorie choices off the table.  If you have to get up to get another serving, you may skip it altogether.
  • Make a commitment to exercise for at least 15 minutes every day during the holiday season - walk, dance, jog or yoga - just move.  Once you get started you may find yourself working out much longer.
  • Remember the reason for the season.  Plan dates with your family and friends that aren't focused on eating.  Spend an afternoon shopping, wrapping gifts or volunteering. Start a new family tradition.  If weather permits, go outside and play a game of touch football, take the family dog for a walk, the important part is to bring physical activity into your day.

Healthy Recipe
Amanda Stoner -  Co Event Coordinator

Crispy Baked Avocado Fries

Ingredients:
  • 2 large avocados, sliced
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • ½  tsp Salt & Pepper
  • ½ tsp Cumin
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons oil
Instructions
1.    Pre-heat oven to 400 Degrees F. Pour 1 tablespoon oil in sheet tray or baking dish; set
aside. Squeeze fresh lime juice on avocado slices to preserve their color while baking. Mix
the salt, pepper, cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder together in a small bowl. Sprinkle
the avocado slices with the seasoning mixture. Dredge each avocado slice in flour then dip in
egg and coat in panko breadcrumbs. Be sure the avocado slices are coated very well in the panko.
2.   Place in a single layer on the greased sheet pan. Drizzle with the remaining oil or spray with cooking spray. This will help the avocado slices crisp in the oven.
3.   Bake for 15 minutes or until the avocados are golden and crispy.

Note: These avocado fries will last in the fridge for up to 24 hours and are excellent when
re-heated in the toaster oven.
Serves: 4

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Christmas time is here, and we know how much fun it can get. However, we also know how unhealthy it can get. During Christmas season, we forget how much we are eating and sitting down, and this leads to a massive weight gain! According to the New England Journal of Medicine, people gain 1.5 lbs. Per holiday season all around the world! Americans top the list with 5-8 lbs.  Here are three ways that we can have a healthy holiday season:

1.  Food is not the only part of Christmas- As a very heavy Christmas celebrator, food is one of my favorite parts of it, and I sometimes tend to get distracted from so many other fun rituals involved with Christmas. Cut down on food, and do some other things, like caroling and putting up a Christmas tree.
2.  Give back- Many of you have heard this before, but it is true- "It is better to give than receive". There are three pillars to health, physical, mental, AND mental health. It's the holidays; this is the best time to show what you are thankful for. Take the initiative to give back by volunteering at a local soup kitchen, visit a nursing home, cooking food for first-responders, and etc. According to a Harvard Health Study, people who volunteer are likely to have a lower blood pressure, and have a longer lasting life.

In all, just make sure that you keep yourself in check during the holidays. Try to balance the unhealthy things that you do, with the healthy, fun things mentioned above! If you have been inspired, be creative, and come up with your own ways to stay healthy during the holiday season.

I wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year,

Raj Solanki
