Highlights: Weekend Storm Preparation, 310 Esplanade Demolition
Connect With Pacifica This Week
Greetings!

First of all, Happy New Year!  I hope that 2017 proves to be a wonderful year of health and happiness for you and your family!

We are certainly hitting the ground running in the new year with news and meetings.  This past Wednesday, the Council held a special meeting and approved the demolition of the apartment building at 310 Esplanade Ave.  The bluff below the building has been gradually eroding and is now to the point that it has become a public safety issue.  While we have been waiting for the owner to take action, he has not done so and has told us he has no resources.  He declared bankruptcy in 2015.

In the past few weeks, we determined that demolition can’t wait any longer so have initiated the steps to take the building down.  The timing will depend on the time needed to remove the hazardous materials inside the building (i.e., asbestos and lead given the building’s vintage) and the weather in the next week or so because we don’t want to be breaking up the building in high wind.  The TV news has been all over this story so no doubt you will hear more from them.

Speaking of weather, a severe storm is forecast for this weekend with as much as 3 inches of rain and strong winds.  We have put into motion preparations such as planning ahead for staffing over the next two days to respond to incidents, pre-staging a digital sign on Highway 1 in case traffic needs to be rerouted, and placing street barricades in areas prone to flooding to keep traffic out.

We are also closing the Pacifica Pier tonight (Friday) and leaving it closed until at least Monday morning when we will reevaluate conditions.  The high tides over the weekend along with the storm may make being on the pier or near the water’s edge precarious.

You can also help—please be sure your gutters are clean and not blocked by obstacles and check nearby storm drains; if you see debris, please remove it.  Also high winds can bring down trees and power lines so make sure you have flashlights with fresh batteries placed around your home or office.

If you need sand bags, we have set up three locations to get supplies: (1) behind the Linda Mar Fire Station, (2) at the City’s Corporation Yard located on the corner of Oceana Blvd. and Milagra Ave., and (3) at the former waste water plant site located on the corner of Montecito & Palmetto Avenues.  Supplies are limited so please take only what you need.

The City staff who are directly involved in preparing for and responding to storm conditions do an amazing job.  I am so proud of their efforts and their commitment to take care of the community under very challenging conditions.

Please let me know if you have comments or questions, and thank you for wanting to Connect with Pacifica!

Warmly,
LORIE TINFOW
City Manager
