MOA Mourns Past President Max McKinney, DO
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Max McKinney II, DO, passing on December 27, 2016. Dr. McKinney was a Past President of the MOA (1997-98) and his presence will be missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
A celebration of Dr. McKinney's life will be held 2-5 p.m. Saturday, January 28 at Glen Oaks Country Club, 30500 W. Thirteen Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Michigan.

New Bills Signed Address Opioid Overdoses
Lt. Governor Brian Calley signed into
law two
laws allowing the overdose reversal drugs be prescribed to schools to have on hand for emergencies. School districts obtaining naloxone would be required to have at least two employees with training on how to administer the drug.

The legislation was proposed after the release in 2015 of recommendations by a state task force to fight Michigan's worsening prescription drug and opioid abuse epidemic.
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) has help shape policy, providing recommendations to the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force. MOA board member, and chair of the MOA Task Force on Safe Opioid Use, Dr. Stephen Bell has been a part of the governor's task force and currently serves on the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Commission.
"It is an honor to serve on the commission and particularly rewarding to see legislation take affect that can help reduce the amount of overdose deaths in our state," said Dr. Bell.
The commission will continue to work on getting the recommendations turned into policy.

LARA Establishes New Rules on Delegation of Prescribing Controlled Substances
The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has established new rules on physicians delegating the prescription of controlled substances to nurse practitioner or nurse midwives and physician's assistants. The revised rules, effective December 20, 2016, include a list of requirements for the supervising physician. At this point, LARA is in the process of updating the forms and the related information on their website (www.michigan.gov/bpl) but LARA does have the rules online in a PDF file.

MOA Now Accepting Resolutions for the House of Delegates
The 2017 Michigan Osteopathic Association House of Delegates will meet on Thursday, May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Westin Southfield Detroit. If you have resolutions you wish to submit to the 2017 House of Delegates, you can now do so via the MOA website.
