Be part of the MLK Sunday Celebration:
an invitation from your interim minister
Sunday, January 15 is on its way. I invite you to get involved in the making of our morning worship. Here are two ways to contribute:
1.
Share your story - how were/are you inspired by Rev. Dr. King? Tell us - in person during the service or write/tell your story to Rev. Joanne and she will share your story.
2.
Create a way for us to be “of service” in the service - what is something we could do while we celebrate - in song and story and prayer - Rev. Dr. King’s legacy?
Ideas from another congregation:
- packing toilet paper and diapers for local families at basic needs service organization
- tying blankets for a local homeless youth drop-in center
- writing letters of love and support to local activists
- getting stuff ready for a refugee family that the congregation is sponsoring who arrives at the end of January
- making some dry soup mix to give to out of town congregants who need a little extra love
What could we do together? Share your idea with Rev. Joanne and lead the effort.
Let’s make this MLK Sunday a day to remember and refresh, engage and participate in the work towards building the beloved community.

You Are Invited
to Get Involved with the Membership Committee! from Peggy Patten Membership Committee Chair
The Membership Committee (MC) provides ways for visitors and members to experience a sense of community within the church and strengthen connections as the church fulfills its mission to “build community, seek inspiration, promote justice, and find peace.” The MC strengthens connections and community through its Hospitality Teams, Circle Suppers, Book and Magazine Exchange Sundays, Newcomer Potlucks, monthly birthday cakes and the Connections Hub table resources. The MC also helps others learn more about our faith community through various outreach methods and techniques. These include social media, print, radio and web advertisements.
You can help the MC in the following ways:
If you are interested in the above activities, please join us! The MC meets every other month on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 – 6:00. Agendas are sent out in advance and detailed minutes follow each meeting. If you cannot make meetings you can stay apprised of our work by joining the MC listserv.
Whether you are on the MC or not, you can help us strengthen connections at the church by reaching out to others at church—newcomers and ongoing members alike. If someone has not been at church for a while, consider contacting them. If you have not been a church for a while, please reach out to us.
If you have questions or want to join the Membership Committee or our listserv, contact MC chair, Peggy Patten, m-patten@sbcglobal.net

January Shared Offering: Homeless
Men’s Winter Shelter
Champaign-Urbana does not have an operating, nightly, overnight shelter for homeless men. The need for a men’s overnight shelter during the coldest of the winter months is critical. An Interfaith group is working to provide a 3-month emergency shelter while another group works on a long-term solution. The shelter opened Jan. 1 at First Presbyterian (Champaign) while fundraising continues. Your donation can help keep it open through March (checks-UUCUC, memo “Men’s Winter Shelter”). The shelter will be operated by paid administrative and overnight staff and supplemented with volunteers. Contact Marilynne Davis at mbdrotary@gmail.com to volunteer.
