Track & Field Results (1/2/17)
The track & field team competed again on Monday, January 2nd. The boys' 4x800 relay team and the girls' 4x400 relay team won while the girls' 4x200 was 2nd and the boys' 4x200 team was 3rd. Joey N. won the 3200, D'Artagnan B. won the 55 hurdles, and Mik'yla S. won the 55. Grace C. was 2nd in the 3200, Ashley H. was 3rd in the 55, Mik'yla S. was 3rd in the 300, Rafi C. was 6th in the 55, Darren K. was 7th in the 800, Caitlyn W. was 7th in the 1600 and 8th in the 800, Jorie K. was 8th in the 55 and Elijah R. was 8th in the high jump.

Wrestling Team Improves to 5-0
The Wrestling Team improved to 5-0 on the season by overpowering Reservoir and Hammond last night (12/20) by a combined score of 95-32.  The dynamic duo at 220 pounds of Kahlil A. and Aaron S. continue to put on clinics as they led Oakland Mills to victory. The strong leadership from undefeated captains Kyle F. and Johnny R. inspired the team to its 5th straight victory.

Stevens Forest Elementary School (SFES)

Winter Chorus and Choir Chimes Concert
Thursday, January 12th, 7:00pm, SFES Gymnasium
Due to the water main break before Winter Break, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Chorus/Choir Chimes concert was rescheduled.  Many of the songs to be performed will be very familiar to you. We might even ask you to sing along with us! The children are very much looking forward to the concerts. We'll see you then.
This year chorus and choir chimes students will be issued a limited number of tickets for their family members to attend the evening concert. Each performing student will be able to bring two (2) people to the concert. The use of tickets will ensure we remain within the capacity limits for our gymnasium.

Annual PTA Art Night Extravaganza
Thursday, January 19th, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Join us  for an evening celebrating the arts.  The event features a performance by our Choir Chimes group. Artwork by students from each grade will be on display throughout the school. 
There will be a special ceremony recognizing students who participated in the 2016 National PTA Reflections program, as well as a slideshow presentation of the 5th grade mural project, which was made possible by a grant from the Howard County Arts Council. 
We will also feature artwork created by our students outside of school. If your child has a special piece of art at home and would like to see it displayed in school, please contact us by January 6. 
Light refreshments will be served.

Talbott Springs Elementary School (TSES)
 
Please Welcome our Acting Assistant Principal
Please welcome Mr. Paul Linkins as the TSES Acting Assistant Principal. Mr. Linkins has worked at TSES since July 2016 as our Pupil Personnel Worker. Mr. Linkins has a wide variety of experiences with the HCPSS and will be an asset to our school team as an administrator.  In addition to being certified as a school administrator, Mr. Linkins is a husband, father of two young children and an avid soccer player. Please be sure to say hello to Mr. Linkins next week!

LEGOS needed!
It's time for some closet cleaning! Do you have unused Legos at home? Do you have  sets that are missing pieces? Please donate your Legos to support the Talbott Springs Elementary School 1 st grade's gifted and talented instructional seminar titled, "Lego Architecture". This STEM activity allows students to use their spatial and problem solving skills as they build skyscrapers. Please bag up and send all donations to Ms. Washington and Mrs. Lepore at TSES. JA in a Day: Many More Volunteers Needed
Attention Parents, Grandparents and Family Friends...we still need many more volunteers to spend the day teaching our children about financial literacy on Tuesday, January 31st. All materials will be provided by Junior Achievement (JA), as will scripted lessons. Parents, if you can't make it, consider asking your child's grandparent(s) to come in to lead a class. There is a brief, mandatory training for all volunteers on Tuesday, January 17th (8:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m.). If you are able to volunteer or if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Glassband at [email protected] as soon as possible. Thank you!

IMMEDIATE NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THE MEDIA CENTER!
Mrs. McIlvain is asking for anyone who has an interest in shelving books, assisting children with book check-out, and/or completing special projects to contact her in the THES Media Center as soon as possible. The need for extra committed, weekly volunteers begins this month! First and foremost, it would be very helpful to hear from those who have free time and can commit to volunteering one afternoon every week. There will also be a need for extra hands in the media center each day of the week, morning and afternoon. Please contact  Mrs. McIlvain  as soon as possible.

Parent Academy: What Parents and Students Need to Know Bullying Prevention and Social Media
Saturday, January 14, 2017, 9:00-11:15 a.m., Oakland Mills Middle School, 9540 Kilimanjaro Rd
Representatives from the Howard County Police Department and the Howard County Public School System will discuss bullying and the use of social media. Come learn about bullying reporting and investigative procedures. Additionally, parents will learn about various social media sites students are accessing and how to monitor social media usage.

HCPSS to Hold Voices for a Drug-Free Community Conversation
Wednesday, January 18th, 7-9pm, Wilde Lake HS Cafeteria
Members of the community are invited to "Voices for a Drug-Free Community," an evening of dialogue about challenges and solutions for creating a drug-free community. 
Representatives from the Howard County Public School System, the Howard County Police Department, the Howard County Health Department and HC DrugFree will share information about available resources and join roundtable discussions about drug prevention, identification and treatment.

"Know Before You Owe" - Student Loan Forum and Resources Fair

A-OK Mentoring 
Make a difference-help enhance the academic and social development of identified Howard County elementary school students in schools near you through a consistent, supportive relationship with a child.  Volunteers must be available weekday, daytime hours to meet one-on-one with an assigned student during the school day or with students in small groups in afterschool programs.

Lively Arts for Little Ones Presents Mr. Gabe
