Industry News
"At the core of AFRA's mission is its Best Management Practices (BMP) guide of recommendations concerning best practices for the management of end-of-life aircraft disassembly and recycling. And the perspectives and participation from airline companies on this topic are welcome as AFRA strives to promote efficient and safe practices in end-of-life aircraft disassembly and recycling ..."

"Expect more focus on predictive maintenance. This will be enabled by more data that does not come from the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, as well as breakthroughs in industry data-sharing that are format-agnostic-a problem that has been a big barrier..."
- Aviation Week

"The aftermarket is certainly going to be the area to watch for two reasons: first the growing presence of OEMs in the aftermarket and second the disruption caused by new technologies that drive improved aircraft availability. On newer platforms, OEMs are increasing their footprint in the aftermarket and are incentivising buyers to enter into all-inclusive 'aftercare' packages, rather than engage with different MROs on a case-by-case basis..."

Association Update
From Amy Bann, Boeing Commercial Airplanes
Dear AFRA members,

Happy New Year! 2017 is poised to be a time of growth and exciting activity in the aviation dismantling and disassembly industry. We want to support our members' priorities as we focus resources - keep sharing what is important to you so the management team and Board can guide strategic plans and decisions in directions that best serve your needs.

Lots of solid progress in 2016- from signing partnership agreements with the airline association IATA and the United Nations aviation agency ICAO, to revamping the logo, website and social media presence. We welcomed over ten new companies, and established a new member category for airlines to get involved with their expertise and perspective. We contributed to several media pieces and publications.

Looking ahead to 2017, we'll continue to serve as an industry voice, representing AFRA members at key events, policy venues and liaising with related associations.

Committees are a great forum for member engagement. Maintaining and improving the BMP Accreditation Program will remain a major focus. If you'd like to get involved in evaluating changes to the BMP, please join the BMP Development Committee. We will also seek to grow the R & D Committee and research network- if you are interested or have project idea please get in touch. The communications committee will look for proactive opportunities to shape messaging and promote AFRA online, at in person events and in the media. The government affairs committee will be busy this coming year. We have an engagement plan and messaging materials ready. With political transitions in the U.S agencies, early 2017 focus will be in the EU while providing regular monitoring updates across global policy activity.

Thank you for being part of AFRA. Best of luck in business and beyond as 2017 begins!

Association Updates
Government Affairs Program

The Government Affairs Committee recently finalized a set of Association talking-points and an aviation industry organizational reference chart, both of which can be found in the member's only section on the AFRA website. As we head into the New Year, the political situation in Washington, DC remains in flux. Congressional committees are re-staffing and federal regulatory agencies are transitioning to a new Administration. To allow time for the dust to settle, AFRA plans to focus our government affairs outreach and engagement efforts in the European Union. AFRA will execute an outreach program focused on increasing the overall visibility of the industry on the Brussels scene and to put the association on the radar of European Union decision makers, covering key officials and contacts within the European Commission, European Parliament, and other stakeholder organizations.

AFRA BMP Development Committee

The next teleconference meeting of this Committee is set for Friday, January 6 at 9:00am ET. On the agenda will be a discussion of potential changes to strengthen the BMP. The AFRA Board of Directors has recently approved modifications to the AFRA BMP, to revise some administrative and general aspects of the BMP. In addition, we've received some feedback from a member company for consideration of the Committee. If you'd like to get involved, please contact staff to be added to the participant list.

AFRA Communications Committee

The Communications Committee met via teleconference in December to discuss upcoming member content opportunities and 2017 initiatives. If you have ideas to boost AFRA's communications efforts, please send along your ideas and/or email staff to be added to the Committee roster.

AFRA R&D Committee

This group is establishing an AFRA Research Network in 2017 to invite research organizations to contribute their research content and expertise to advance the aircraft end-of-life industry. If you are interested in participating, email staff to take part in this Committee.

AFRA Joins CER as Associate Member

AFRA recently was accepted as an associate member of the European Remanufacturing Council, CER (Conseil Européen de Remanufacture). The objective of CER is to become the focal point for remanufacturing policy dialogue in Europe, while helping small and large businesses from all remanufactured product sectors grow and create jobs. If you or your organization is interested in getting involved, please reach out to  Edward Sims .
