FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF ST. MARY THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
BLESSING OF GRAPES AND MADAGH (HARISSA)
|
On Sunday, August 13, 2017, the community of St. Sarkis Church observed the Feast of the Assumption (Verapokoum) of the Holy Virgin Mary. Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon. Following the Divine Liturgy, over 150 parishioners attended the ceremony of blessing of the grapes and enjoyed a traditional Harissa luncheon, hosted by the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church. Der Hayr took a moment to remember our beloved Karnig Nercessian by keeping his memory and legacy alive and by always remembering him.
Under the Leadership of Mrs. Ani Nercessian, a traditional Harissa was prepared with the help of Mrs. Loucine Megherian, Yn. Annie Terterian and members of the Ladies Guild. The customary and refreshing tan was donated and prepared by Mrs. Dori Shishmanian.
This year, the Harissa was donated by Mrs. Azniv Ebrimian.
Grapes were donated by Mr. & Mrs. Edward and Coharig Barsamian and Mr. & Mrs. George and Katia Tavitian and family.
The Blessing of the Grapes is based on the Biblical teaching "So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me...You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 26:10). In the Armenian Church, the offering of first fruit takes the form of a thanksgiving and blessing, and then the faithful consume the fruit.
Harissa, the traditional Armenian recipe dating back to St. Gregory the Illuminator, began at St. Sarkis Church 11 years ago and became a popular fellowship for parishioners. |

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO CORINTHIANS(6.16-7.1)
What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people." "Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (1.39-56)
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!" And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me- holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers."
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNA AND THE OIL-BEARING WOMEN
On Tuesday, August 22, the Armenian Church commemorates Saints Joachim and Anna, parents of Mary, the mother of Christ. Joachim, son of Barpathir, was a descendant of David, to whom God had revealed that the Savior of the world would be born through his descendants. Anna was a descendant of the tribe of Levi through her father, and the tribe of Judah through her mother. Joachim and Anna were childless through years of marriage and were reproached for their barrenness. Joachim fasted for forty days in the desert and both of them prayed for a child, ultimately placing their trust in God's will, whatever it may be. An angel appeared to each of them telling them they would be the parents of a daughter, in spite of their advanced age. That child was Mary, the blessed mother of Christ.
On the same day the Church remembers the oil-bearing women (Myrophores). These are the eight women who are identified as the oil- or myrrh-bearers in the four Gospels who had different roles during Christ's ministry, at the Cross, and the tomb on Easter morning. The eight women are: Mary Magdalene, Mary (Theotokos), Joanna, Salome, Mary (wife of Cleopas), Susanna, Mary of Bethany, and Martha of Bethany.
ST. JEREMIAH THE PROPHET
On Thursday, August 24, the Armenian Church remembers Jeremiah, one of the prophets of the Old Testament. His writings are collected in the Old Testament book of Jeremiah and the Book of Lamentations is attributed to him. God appointed Jeremiah to confront Judah and Jerusalem for the worship of idols and other violations of the covenant (described in the Book of Deuteronomy). Jeremiah had the task of explaining the reason for the impending disaster-the destruction by the Babylonian army and captivity: "And when your people say, 'Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?' you shall say to them, 'As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.'"

Prelate Receives Award from ARS
|
The delegates of Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Eastern United States convened in Arlington, Virginia in June for the organization's 97th annual convention. Talin Daghlian, chair of the Regional Board of Directors, welcomed the delegates who over a period of two-and-a-half days, reflected on the prior year's significant successes and debated over new milestones to achieve for the future.
During the proceedings, Ms. Daghlian presented Archbishop Oshagan with the region's prestigious Agnouni Award, named for the founder of the ARS Edgar Agnouni (Khachadour Malumian). Archbishop Oshagan accepted the award with humility, saying that the honor inspiring the award belongs to God. He wished the ARS continued growth and great success.
Ms. Daghlian applauded the work of the chapters and the important fundraising successes achieved by the region that included raising more than $450,000 to support the international ARS effort to reconstruct the ARS Sosseh Kindergarten in Stepanakert. Additional donations to the region flowed from two major cultural entrepreneurship events: the Shadoyan Fashion Show in New Jersey and the Pinajian Art Exhibit in New York. The continued success and growth of the ARS Youth Connect Program that most recently drew 160 college-age Armenian students to learn more about Armenian history and current affairs was also a topic of discussion.
