|
Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. However, Labor Day recognizes the significance of work in creating a productive and healthy society.
For us Christians, work is the best way to manifest our faith. The firs t example of work from the Bible is of God in the accounts of creation: "God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good." (Genesis 1.31). Therefore we are called to follow the biblical example of creativity and excellence in work.
Let us all pray with the words of the Armenian Prayer; " Hear us oh God our Savior, incline your ears to our supplications so that the labors of your servants may not be in vain. Rather count our works as deeds of righteousness and fruit of piety". Amen.

Nothing can replace the experience of attending church on Sundays and being part of the Divine Liturgy celebration. However, you can listen to the sermon that was delivered at St. Sarkis Church last Sunday by Fr. Nareg Terterian.

PRAYERS AND AID ARE NEEDED NOW
The nation's newscasters were at a loss for words-"epic," "deluge," "biblical," "torrent"--nothing seemed to adequately describe the disaster named Hurricane Harvey that was relentlessly pounding parts of Texas for days. More than one hundred thousand homes have been destroyed. The number of deaths is mounting as the full scope of the storm's effect is coming to light. Without doubt, the recovery will be slow and costly.
By the directive of Archbishop Oshagan, on the next two Sundays (September 3 and September 10) Prelacy parishes will collect donations to help the survivors of the storm. His Eminence has asked that the sermons on those two Sundays make note of the disaster and offer prayers for those who perished, as well as for the thousands who lost their homes and livelihoods and face a long period of unsettled recovery.
The Prelacy will forward all donations received from parishes to a designated agency that is providing immediate relief. Donations may also be sent directly to the Eastern Prelacy, 138 East 39th Street, New York, New York 10016. Checks should be payable to Armenian Apostolic Church of America, with "Hurricane Harvey" noted in the memo area. Please be as charitable as possible.

Summer Camp Donors & Staff Appreciation

On Friday, August 25th, 2017, St. Sarkis Church Summer Camp held a Sip,Savor and Celebration for Sponsors and Staff Members. We all had a wonderful time sipping wine and enjoyed an array of delicious appetizers. In the background there was a slideshow of various activities, which took place during this years camp session. The smiles on all the children's faces brought much joy to all attending! We greatly appreciate all the hard work of our staff members and the generosity of our sponsors.

My name is Shahen Fiesel. I have been going to Saint Sarkis Summer Camp for 10 years now. I would like to thank the sponsors for their generous donations to the summer camp. Without you, the camp would not have all the activities we had. My favorite parts were when we went rock climbing, laser tag, and when the game truck came. THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (2:12-3.3)
When I came to Troas to proclaim the good news of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord;
but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said farewell to them and went on to Macedonia.
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.
For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;
to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
For we are not peddlers of God's word like so many; but in Christ we speak as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again?
Surely we do not need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you, do we?
You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all;
and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Երբ Տրովասա հասայ, Քրիստոսի Աւետարանը քարողելու համար, Տէրը իմ առջեւս յաջողութեան դուռը բացաւ։ Բայց ես չափազանց մտահոգ էի , որովհետեւ հոն չգտայ Տիտոսը, մեր եղբայրը։ Ուստի տրովադցիներէն հրաժեշտ ոռնելով Մակեդոնիա անցայ։
Արդ, գոհութիւն Աստուծոյ որ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի յաղթական եերթին մասնակից կը դարձընէ մեզ, եւ մեր միջոցաւ իր գիտութեան բոյրը կը տարածէ ամենուրեք։ Փրկուողներուն մէջ ապրինք թէ կորսուողներրուն, մեր կեանքերը Քրիստոցի ձեռքով Աստուծոյ ընծայուած անուշահոտ խունկի պէս իրենց բոյրը կը տարածեն։
Կորսուողներուն համար մահաբոյր կը թուի մեր կեանքը, մինչ փրկուողներուն համար՝ կեանքի բուրմունք։ Բայց ասիկա ճշմարիտ է ո՛չ թէ անոնց համար որոնք Աստւոծոյ խօսքը վաճառքի կը հանեն, այլ մեզի՛ համար, որ անկեղծօրէն կը խօսինք Աստուծոյ առջեւ, որպէս Քրիստոսի միացած Աստուծոյ պատգամաւորները։
Բայց ասիկա ըսելով, արդեօք ուրիշներուն պէս մենք մեզ գովաբանա՞ծ կþըլլանք։ Պէտք ունի՞նք միթէ ձեզմէ հանձնարարական առնելու կամ այդպիսի նամակներովձեզի ներկայանալու, ինչպէս ոմանք կþընեն։ Որովհետեւ մեր լաւագոյն յանձնարարականը, որ ձեր սիրտերուն մէջ գրուած է դո՛ւք էք ձեր կեանքերով, զոր ամէն մարդ կրնայ տեսնել ու կարդալ, եւ կրնայ ճանչնալ՝ թէ Քրիստոսի՛ նամակն էք դուք, պարզապէս մեր ձեռքով գրուած։
Գրուած ո՛չ թէ մելանով, այլ կենդանի Աստուծոյ Հոգիով, ո՛չ թէ քարեղէն տախտակներու, այլ ձեր սիրտերու մարմնեղէն տախտակներուն վրայ։
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK Mark (6:30-44)
The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught.
He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.
As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late;
send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat."
But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii
worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?"
And he said to them, "How many loaves have you? Go and see." When they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."
Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And all ate and were filled;
and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.
Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԷՆ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՐԿՈՍԻ (6.30-44)
Առագեալները վերադարձան Յիսուսի մօտ եւ անոր պատմեցին ինչ որ կատարեցին եւ սորվեցուցին։
Յիսուս անոնց ըսաւ. «Եկէ՛ք երթանք ամայի տեղ մը, ուր առանձին կրնանք
ըլլալ եւ հոն քիչ մը կը հանգչինք», որովհետեւ ժողովուրդէն շատերուն երթալժ-գալուն պատճառով ուտելու իսկ առիթ չէին ունեցած։
Հետեռաբար իրենք առանձինն նաւակ առին եւ գացին ամայի վայր մը։
Երբ ժողովուրդը տեսաւ անոնց երթալը եւ գիտցաւ թէ Յիսուս ալ անոնց հետ է, շրջակայ քաղաքներու բնակիչներէն շատեր ծովեզերքէն վազելով անոնցմէ առաջ հասան անոնց երթալիք վայրը։ Երբ Յիսուս նաւակէն դուրս ելաւ եւ տեսաւ ամբոխը, գթաց անոնց, որովհետեւ հովիւ չունեցող ոչխարներու կը նմանէին։ Ապա սկսաւ երկարօրէն ուսուցանոլ անոնց։
Երբ բաւական ժամանակ անցաւ, աշակերտները մօտեցան Յիսուսի եւ ըսին. «Ամայի տեղ ենք, եւ արդէն բաւական ուշ է. չմթնցած ժողովուրդը, որպէսզի շրջակայ ագարակներն ու գիւղերը երթան իրենց համար ուտելիք գնելու, որովհետեւ ուտելիք չունին»։ Յիսուս անոնց ըսաւ. «Դո՛ւք տուէք անոնց ուտելիքը»։ Անոնք հարցուցին. «Կþուզե՞ս որ երթանք եւ երկու հարիւր դահեկան հաց գնենք զանոնք կերակրելու համար»։ Յիսուս ըսաւ. «Գացէ՛ք, տեսէք թէ քանի՞ հաց ունիք»։ Աշակերտները ստուգեցին եւ ըսին. «Հինգ հաց եւ երկու ձուկ»։ Յիսուս հրամայեց աշակերտներուն որ ժողովուրդը խումբ-խումբ նստեցնենդալար խոտին վրայ, եւ անոնք հարիւրական եւ յիսունական հոգիներէ բաղկացած խումբերով նստան։ Ապա Յիսուս առաւ հինգ հացը եւ երկու ձուկը, երկինք նայեցաւ, օրհնեց, կտրեց հացերը եւ տուաւ աշակերտներուն որպէսզի բաշխեն, եւ երկու ձուկերը բաժնեց ժողովուրդին։ Բոլորն ալ կերան ու կշտացան, եւ աւելցած հացի եւ ձուկի կտորները հաւաքելով տասներկու սակառ լեցուցին։ Իսկ ուտողներուն թիւը, միայան այր մարդիկը հաշուած, շուրջ հինգ հազար էր։

St. John The Forerunner And Job The Righteous
Today, August 31, the Armenian Church commemorates St. John the Forerunner and Job the Righteous.
St. John the Forerunner, also known as John the Baptist (Hovhaness Mkrtich), is an important figure in the Gospels. He is recognized as the "forerunner" (Karapet) to the Messiah. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea. At the age of 30 he began to preach against the evils of the times and called for penance and baptism because "the kingdom of heaven is close at hand."
Job is a good and righteous person who experiences and endures catastrophe after catastrophe. The phrase "the patience of Job" has entered the English lexicon as a popular cliché. The Book of Job is one of the five books classified as the "poetical books" of the Bible. The central theme is the mystery of suffering. Ultimately, Job is rewarded because "the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning," and "After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children's children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days." (Job, chapter 42).

The 50th anniversary of the ordination of His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan will take place on Sunday, October 29, under the auspices and presence of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of the Great House of Cilicia.
The celebratory day will begin with a special Divine Liturgy at St. Illuminator Cathedral, 221 East 27th Street, New York City, beginning at 10 am. A reception and dinner will follow at The New York Palace, 455 Madison Avenue, New York City.
The first joint meeting of the Steering and Banquet Committees took place at the Prelacy offices, under the chairmanship of His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General, to plan a worthy and proper celebration of the fifty years of distinguished service rendered by His Eminence to the Armenian Church and Nation. During the coming weeks we will share the exciting details. For now,
please reserve the new date: Sunday, October 29.
