While female faculty members were recognized at GWIM's Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception, speakers also discussed plans to promote prominent women in a more visible way.

Students in the Nurse Anesthesia Program came to Georgetown from all over the United States, Ryan Farley (G'17), RN, said at the program's completion ceremony. "I truly feel we have been given all the skills necessary to be exceptional providers," he added.



Several family members and former colleagues of the late Robert S. Ledley, DDS, recently gathered to celebrate a contribution made in his honor that will support biomedical education at Georgetown.

Nearly 300 medical professionals, patients, caregivers and advocates attended the 8th Annual Ruesch Center Symposium on December 1, learning about immunotherapy, precision medicine, proton therapy, molecular imaging and more.



Jeanne Ruesch is the first to say that the award she received at the 31st Annual Lombardi Gala was not really something she wanted. Rather, she said, the recognition chose her.
Scott Schmidt (G'19), FNP, RN, a U.S. Air Force veteran and student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, aided with hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico and Texas.


Breaking down silos and increasing collaboration between researchers in biomedical research, clinical and translational research and informatics are critical for the future of big data, Subha Madhavan, PhD, said at the 6th Annual Big Data in Biomedicine Symposium.
 




Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives Taps Giordano
The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives  (DABI) has named James Giordano, PhD, as one of its newest members. The DABI honors the lifelong achievements of brain scientists worldwide for making substantive contributions to advancing key aspects of the field in science and society. Giordano, a professor of neurology and biochemistry, is chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program in the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics.
 
NHS Assistant Dean Selected for Mid-Atlantic Region Health Equity Council
Brian Floyd, MS, an assistant dean at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, will serve a three-year term on the Region III Health Equity Council, which represents Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Georgetown Lauded for Research Animal Care and Use
The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International Council on Accreditation has awarded Georgetown University full accreditation once again. Congratulations to Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) members: Lawrence Kromer, PhD, IACUC chair; Patricia Foley, DVM, director of the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM); Amy Ludwig, IACUC administrator; and Shawn Rousseau, DCM facility manager.   

Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance and HOYA Clinic Honored
The Paul Robert Carey Foundation honored the Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance and HOYA Clinic at a breakfast in New York City on December 6. The Paul Robert Carey Foundation was founded by his family, friends and physician "to return the blessings we all shared in him, by enabling people battling cancer and other diseases to obtain vital quality of life needs and services not funded by traditional medical reimbursements."  

Georgetown and USP Quality Institute Name Fellows
The USP Quality Institute and Georgetown University Medical Center announced the inaugural fellows selected for the institutions'  
Fellowship in Quality Medical Products . The fellows, Matthew Hassett, PhD, and Marissa Malchione, MS, will conduct research to address evidence gaps relating to the impact of poor-quality medicines on antimicrobial resistance.
   
Ben Johnson (NHS'17), a human science alumnus and current student at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, received a Marshall Scholarship. He will pursue master's degrees at the University of Edinburgh and King's College of London.
 
Success for Big Hoya Little Saxa Book Drive
The Big Hoya Little Saxa back-to-school book drive held earlier this fall received a total of 259 book donations from GUMC students, faculty and staff. The organizers thank Dean Jett McCann and the Dahlgren Memorial Library for their support, as well as all of those who donated.

New Test Provides Accurate Measure of DNA Damage from Chemical Compounds
A new biomarker test developed by researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and their colleagues can help predict, with up to 90 percent certainty, which chemical compounds can cause DNA damage that could lead to cancer.
USP Quality Institute and Georgetown University Name Two Fellows in Quality Medical Products Fellowship
The USP Quality Institute and Georgetown University Medical Center announce that Matthew Hassett, PhD, and Marissa Malchione, MS, are the inaugural fellows selected for the institutions' Fellowship in Quality Medical Products.
 




The university presents the award to an inspirational and emerging local leader at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Let Freedom Ring Concert, a free celebration to honor the life and legacy of MLK. This year, the concert will feature award-winning actress and singer Vanessa L. Williams.
