Science Action Club: Environmental Science Program for Afterschool

The Pacific Northwest Girls Collaborative Project is excited to present an engaging, hands-on STEM curriculum opportunity FREE to YOU!
What is Science Action Club?
Science Action Club is a high-impact science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program for youth grades 5-8 in out-of-school time. Through hands-on games and projects, youth in Science Action Club investigate their local environment and use citizen science to document discoveries, share data, and design strategies to protect our planet. Science Action Club is a national science project that allows participating youth to connect and share with other kids and scientists from across the country.
When and where is the training?
February 25, 2017 from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the
Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA.
Selected Activity Leaders will participate in this full-day training and receive a kit to implement with 20+ youth. Contact

What is the curriculum?
Participating programs will be trained to implement 12 one-hour club activities from the
Birds in Your Schoolyard curriculum. The curriculum training is accompanied by a guidebook and a kit to serve 20+ youth. Each kit, valued at over $500, contains tools and supplies for up to 20 youth.
Who can participate?
Afterschool providers, libraries, science centers, museums, and camps - any providers serving youth in grades 5-8 in an informal setting

Meet
Alice Appleton
. She
grew up with an strong interest in math and history. She gave up on math in college because she didn't like the way it was taught: a professor lecturing straight from a textbook with no group-based problem solving or discussion.
She
was a history major and loved learning how to research, analyze, and communicate her arguments through writing. She took those skills to renewable energy consulting, then went to the University of Michigan where she got her MBA and stumbled upon Microsoft as a challenging, exciting place to work. Because of her
curiosity
and love of learning, she surprised herself by gaining an understanding and a passion for technology.

National Mentoring Month Webinar: Utilizing Mentorship to Empower Girls in STEM
January 31, 2017; 11:00 AM Pacific (2:00 PM Eastern)
NGCP is celebrating National Mentoring Month by highlighting the importance of role models and mentors in empowering girls and young women to actively pursue STEM education and careers.
During this one hour webinar we will discuss exemplary practices with Techbridge, learn of SciGirls resources around mentorship, and hear from FabFems about their experiences mentoring young girls. Participants will discuss methods for promoting mentoring that works to inspire girls to pursue STEM.

Recycled Engineering: The Cardboard Challenge
Cardboard may seem like something your orders are simply shipped in and then gets recycled, but in this workshop, cardboard is seen in a whole new way! In this workshop, celebrate your creativity and put your imagination and engineering skills to work using recycled materials. You will be creating your own cardboard arcade games by sharing your ideas and concepts with your team and collaborating to help one another.
On our last day, we will have an Open Arcade for guests to come and try out our games! It will be fun, messy, and cardboardy!
