School Notes and Athletics
Mr. Bagnato, Principal

Without music, life would be a mistake.
-Friedrich Nietzsche

For those in attendance at the Winter Concert last night, you may agree.  School is many things.  The children at Newton School experience so much more than traditional academics.  This year they have created musical instruments and cardboard boats by using what they learn in science and math.  They write stories about the wonder of snowflakes and their feelings.  They learn how to take care of their physical and emotional selves.  They read to each other and enthusiastically participate in triad activities.  They participate in athletics.  They explore the outdoors and constantly reflect on what they learn and how that learning impacts them individually.

Last night I could not have been prouder of the student's performance at the Winter Concert.  Not only did they sing and dance.  They enjoyed themselves and their enthusiasm was contagious.  The feeling throughout Barrett Hall was one of community and positivity.  Congratulations to all the students and Mr. Fredland.

K, 1,2 News
Ms. Kicza, Mrs. Longcore & Mrs. Robinson

First and second graders enjoyed their latest lesson with Ms. Michelle, our wonderful school counselor. All year they've had a series of group lessons based on social and emotional wellness. They've learned how to work and work play within a group, how to be kind even when someone has a different opinion or idea, and how to respect other people. This week, they heard the Dr. Seuss book "The Sneetches". Some of the Sneetches have stars on their bellies, and they have to learn that this does not make them better than the other Sneetches. After discussing the meaning, first and second graders decided to take on the "kindness challenge". They plan to reach out to someone new this week or be extra kind, and they can choose to report their kindnesses next week. Already, we saw a few new groupings at recess and lots of peaceful playing!

Kindergarten will do this fun project with Ms. Michelle on Monday!

3-5 News
Ms. Cote, Mrs. Hill & Mr. Walker

A big thank you goes out to Mr. Fredland and to the students who participated in the music concert last night.  We also thank those parents and community members who came out to see the students perform. It was wonderful to see all the students so enthusiastic about their performances.

The 3-5 cluster is so lucky to have a rich experiences in the arts.  This ranges from our music and art programs at Newton, to the Hood Museum trips, and the two play performances that we visit each year.

Health News
Nurse Ellen

We have a few students who have had a fever and headache. This seems to be a virus. Please remember it is not too late to have your child vaccinated against the flu. There is currently flu in the area. There is also a stomach bug in the area, although not many Newton children have had it. If your child has a fever or has been sick to their stomach they need to be home for 24 hours before returning to school.

FRIENDLY reminder the health of our students and staff is confidential. We don't expect to have the health of our students and staff discussed by those who are not immediate family, even by those well intentioned, thank you.

Passport to Winter Fun booklets went home today. Please remember to turn in front covers by  Friday the 27th.

7/8 Elective - Outdoor Adventures Winter Edition

We have started to snowshoe this week and hopefully we will be able to be outdoors over the next week.  My plan for the class is to be outdoors as much as possible.  If the weather cooperates students might not need snow pants. However,  I would recommend bringing snow-pants, jacket and gloves in case we are rolling around in the snow.

We are planning on going to the Nordic Center & getting on the Harrington Hill this semester. We are also planning on building some igloos some fun things out of snow as well.

One Planet News
Ms. Kiersten Harlow

Another fun and busy week at One Planet!  On Tuesday  we were able to cross country ski with Bonna in the field above the garden. The kids all did an amazing job getting fitted with their boots and skis and were so helpful with one another.

Wednesday  they enjoyed more STEM with Rob.  Thursday  we started making rock candy and talked about what we might see in the days ahead. Today we read a favorite book of mine Stranger in the Woods By Carl R. Sams II & Jean Stoick. After reading, we made bird seed ornaments that they could take home.
