Become a CFISD Mentor!
Did you know that January is National Mentoring Month?  Mentors serve an important role for the youth in  our schools. Currently over 700 adults are serving as mentors to CFISD students, but many more are needed. Please help us get the word out by letting your friends and family know about this program. Are you on Twitter?  If so, share the need for CFISD mentors with the district's hashtag #MentorCFISD or the national hashtag of #MentorIRL.

To become a CFISD mentor :
  • attend a one hour mentor training (classes offered weekly at the Berry Center, or CFISD  will train potential mentors in groups at your location and date/time!)
  • complete an online mentor application and criminal record history check
  • meet with a student 30 minutes to an hour, one time per week at a school of your choice

Click here for a complete list of trainings and to access the online application.

Devine Virtuosos

We already have plans underway for the 3rd annual Middle School Summer Band Camp for 2017.  Look for dates soon!  We hope to increase our student participation as well as increase the number of scholarships offered.  We had a very successful 2016 camp, providing 30 individual scholarships to underprivileged students in Cy-Fair.  This year, we hope to offer 40 scholarships.  If you helped provide a scholarship last year and can repeat your contribution, or you would like to help one of our students for the first time this year, please email  [email protected].

We also have exciting plans for our instrument refurbishment program.  We hope this program will benefit both Cy-Hope and the community.  Check your closets! Check under the bed! Maybe even open up that storage unit for the first time this year!  If you have any instruments that are taking up space and would like to find it a good home, please email [email protected].
Dierker's Champs
Dierker's Champs will field over 100 students on six teams from Francone, Holbrook, and Matzke Elementary schools. We will host a spring baseball clinic on February 25 at the Cy-Fair High School fields for the kids. Cy-Ranch and Cy-Ridge students on our affiliate team - the Cypress Crushers- will do their community service project by helping run the clinic. Email [email protected] if you can donate gently-used or new equipment (especially gloves) to us or if you can help out at the spring clinic.

Dierker's Champs also needs a Jersey Sponsor. For a donation of $1,000, we will list your name on our team jerseys. We will only list one company and will give it to the first to respond.

Spotlight on Backpack Feeding Program

Cy-Hope currently delivers about 1,250 bags of food to 60 schools in CFISD each week.  We also recently participated in the Clean Undies For Everyone program through The Houston Food Bank. We distributed new underwear to 14 elementary and middle schools. Undies For Everyone enhances the self esteem, dignity, hygiene and success of disadvantaged students by providing them with clean, new underwear through the nurse's office should theirs become soiled while they are at school.

Jeanne Allain started in December as our new Backpack Program Coordinator.  You can email her at [email protected] with questions or for information on volunteer opportunities.
Spotlight on the Hope Centers

The Hope Centers had a fun and busy holiday season! In October, we hosted our Hope Center Halloween parties, which were full of candy, games and ice cream. We also hosted an Upward Basketball Camp and had a field trip to the Houston Zoo. In November, we served our Thanksgiving-style meal to both the Longhorn and Windfern communities and could not have done that without all of the generous volunteers who baked, cooked and purchased everything for us. A special thanks to HEB for the monetary donations and Backyard Grill for cooking the delicious turkey! In December, the kids enjoyed caroling with The Houston Choral Society. In keeping with tradition, we provided "Santa's Workshop" so every Hope Center kid could shop for gifts for their family and friends from all of our volunteers' wonderful donations. Santa also visited both Longhorn and Windfern Hope Centers in December to hand out stockings and stuffed animals to every student. We finished out the holiday season with an exciting field trip to see the Harlem Globetrotters thanks to the JJ Watt Foundation! Look for our Mobile Hope Center STEM bus this spring. For information on volunteering at our Hope Centers, please email [email protected].

Spotlight on Cy-Hope Counseling: The Center for Children & Families

Cy-Hope Counseling has many exciting new opportunities this new year! Cy-Hope Counseling has added a speech therapist to our staff. Valerie Grizzaffi, M.A., CCC-SLP, specializes in working with receptive/expressive language delays, fluency disorders, and pragmatic and social language difficulties. She also has expertise in articulation and phonological processes disorders, where someone may pronounce words incorrectly or omit consonants, leading to a reduced intelligibility. Over the years, Valerie has worked with a variety of diagnoses and feeding disorders in children and adults of all ages. In addition, Valerie works with individuals with reading comprehension difficulties and has experience working with children and families on the autism spectrum disorder. Valerie is eager to work with a child's counselor, when applicable, in order to provide a consistent treatment plan and collaborate with sessions. Valerie is currently offering a promotion for FREE speech and language screening this January. In addition, Cy-Hope Counseling will offer dyadic speech therapy and group therapy with a speech therapist and counselor. Call 713.466.1360 today to reserve your spot!

Cy-Hope Counseling also has some new support groups:

Upper Elementary Social Skills Group
The group will be fun and interactive, designed to help children identify their emotions, increase social communication skills, and learn strategies to better manage their reactions. This group will be run by a licensed counselor and licensed speech therapist.

Social Skills Support: Learning to get Comfortable in Your Own Skin- Junior High and High School
This peer and social group is designed to build self-confidence and improve social skills. It is designed to be fun and interactive, using video games and other activities adolescents enjoy. The group is designed for high-functioning individuals on the autism spectrum, teenagers who experience social anxiety, adolescents with AD/HD or anyone looking to build their social interactions in a fun and exciting way. New members are accepted into the group each month!

A Therapeutic Support Group for Mothers of Children with Special Needs: A Common Thread
Led by Courtney Suddath, MA, LSSP, LPC, this supportive therapeutic group will focus on creating a safe and understanding environment in which to address the unique experiences of mothers of children with special needs. The goal of this group will be for women to share experiences with one another in a confidential and supportive environment, while gaining insight from other members in a similar situation. Group members will be encouraged to process and discuss social and emotional situations they face with their children, while learning about strategies that can be used by the parent themselves, as well as other important people in their child's life. The small-group environment will allow the benefit of individualized problem-solving opportunities as well as having a peer group and licensed counselor available as support.

Couple's Check-In
Give the gift of love and happiness this Valentine's season with a couple checkup. Have a session with a licensed marriage therapist to talk about the strength and growth areas in your relationship. Find ways to reignite your spark or reconnect.

Call 713.466.1360 to sign up for any of our therapies or groups.
