President's Message
 Looking Forward to 2017!
It is with great pleasure that I write my first President's message. I would first like to thank our outgoing President,
Dr. Carolina Medina. With her leadership, 2016 was a great year for AARV! We have a solid foundation from which to build over the next few years with lecture tracks secured at
STAAR 2017 and the
Rehabilitation Summit in 2018. I would also like to acknowledge
Dr. Kristin Kirby Shaw as she moves on from her position as an AARV Board Member. Her efforts over the past five years have certainly elevated the organization to where we are today.
There is a new addition to the AARV Board of Directors. We are very excited that
Dr. Amber Ihrke was selected as the new Membership Chair. I will work with Amber over the next few months as she transitions in to her new role.
It is my goal to maintain and increase the momentum gained over this past year. Although our membership is growing, continued exposure of our organization is imperative for future growth and awareness of this specialty as an integral part of our patient's care. AARV sponsorship of lecture tracks at national meetings, in addition to presentations at
NAVC of AARV-supported research studies, are important to help support the growth of this field.
I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead AARV in 2017. It's going to be a great year, and I am thrilled to be a part of such a great organization. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to seeing you all at NAVC in Orlando!

Past President's Message
Happy 2017!
It is with great pleasure that I pass on the torch of AARV President to
Dr. Cara Blake. I know she will excel and bring the AARV to a new level. I'm excited to work by her side and be on the Board for another year. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to guide the AARV in 2016.
I would like to highlight AARV's successes of 2016.
- NAVC was a huge success! We had exceptional speakers who focused their lectures on working dogs and sports medicine.
- Royal Canin graciously sponsored the John Sherman Award for the next 3 years.
- We offered a lecture track focused on pain management at AAHA.
- We sponsored 3 research grants, thanks to Mars and Aratana.
- Dr. Amber Ihrke was selected as Membership Chair for 2017.
- AARV secured a lecture track at STAAR, which will be held in New Jersey this April.
- AARV secured a lecture track at the Rehabilitation Summit, which will be held in Tennessee in 2018.
- The Board developed a budget to better assess our expenses and incomes and plan for the future.

Save the Date for STAAR 2017!
Be sure to save the date for AARV's lecture track on April 29, 2017, at the STAAR Conference in Florham Park, New Jersey.
Dr. Cara Blake will start the morning by discussing therapeutic modalities as well as novel therapeutics in pain management. Dr. Felix Duerr will explain when to choose surgery as a tool for managing pain in patients with musculoskeletal disease. Dr. Leilani Alvarez will present how to safely and effectively manage pain in old dogs. After lunch, Dr. Rick Wall will teach localizing pain, followed by a repeat of the morning lectures (excluding the modalities talk). This gives the attendees the opportunity to attend both the AARV lecture track one part of the day, as well as a STAAR workshop the other part of the day.
In addition to these educational lectures, AARV also will be hosting a social event the night of April 29th. We hope you attend this event in an effort to get to know you better over some cocktails and appetizers. We will have a fun theme and hope you participate in the festivities. Please also stop by our booth to say hello, ask us any questions you may have, and enter in the raffle drawing.

Veterinary Practice Acts - New Hampshire, New Jersey, and New Mexico

New Hampshire
View New Hampshire's veterinary practice act:
The Veterinary Practice Act has defined "animal physical therapy" and "animal physical therapist." There are also specific rules about animal physical therapy:
332-B:20 Animal Physical Therapy Certification.
- Any physical therapist practicing physical therapy on any animal shall meet the requirements of this section and any additional requirements set by the board of veterinarians pursuant to RSA 332-B:7-a, XIV and shall be certified by the board of veterinary medicine.

New Jersey
View New Jersey's veterinary practice act
Within the veterinary and physical therapy practice acts, there is no section about animal rehabilitation. The last 2 years have seen the introduction of changes to the physical therapy practice act to include "animal physical therapy." These changes have not been approved as yet and do not include education, examination, or continuing education requirements for the performance of animal rehabilitation.
New Mexico
View New Mexico's veterinary practice act:
In New Mexico's veterinary practice act, there is no specific mention of animal rehabilitation, but the rules and regulations include "animal physical therapy" in their definition of the practice of veterinary medicine. No other mention is noted in either the rules and regulation or the veterinary practice act.

See the APRVT at NAVC in Orlando!

Organizing Committee/President, Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (proposed)
EXCITING NEWS! If you have been wanting to become a VTS in Physical Rehabilitation,
the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians has submitted a petition for specialty recognition to the NAVTA CVTS committee on November 1, 2016. We anticipate about 8-12 weeks of being on pins and needles before the CVTS provides an answer as to whether they approve the petition.
Keep checking in with us for where things stand. Once we are officially recognized by NAVTA, we can release the entire application process in detail. If you are not familiar with how to apply for a veterinary technician specialty, please look at the other existing academies on
www.navta.net because many of the application processes are very similar.
We strongly encourage potential applicants to begin collecting letters of recommendation from qualified physical rehabilitation veterinarians and start thinking about why you would like to be a VTS (Physical Rehabilitation). Is there something unique that you can provide to the field? What makes you an exceptionally qualified expert? We want to hear about it, and you may have the chance to tell us in person!
