Do you want to start or revitalize a community garden this year? Now is the time to plan! In this workshop, you'll learn key steps for involving your neighbors and organizing, designing, and planting your garden together.
Whether you're starting a new garden or strengthening an established one, you'll leave with useful practices and resources for achieving your goals.

Apply to be a Community Garden Mentor! In our two-day Mentor Training on February 18 & 25, 2017 you'll gain the community organizing skills and basic horticultural knowledge you need to start and sustain a community garden. After completing this training, Mentors are matched with a community garden in Forsyth County, where they provide ongoing guidance. You can

Annual Seed Swap & Potluck

Slow Food Piedmont, with support from Old Salem Horticulture and Forsyth County Master Gardener volunteers, will hold the much anticipated, annual seed swapping event for both new and long-time heirloom seed growers. A potluck lunch is a part of this event. You are invited to bring a dish you love to make from your garden bounty or from a favorite family recipe.

Happy 2017, gardeners!
January may be too cold to grow tomatoes outdoors, but it's a great time to brush up on your community organizing skills, plan what you'll plant this year, and order seeds and plants for Spring! Forsyth Community Gardening has some great opportunities to help you prepare for a successful gardening season. To kick off the Sustainable Growing Series, we're offering 'Community Gardening 101,' a basic workshop on starting or revitalizing a community garden. If your garden would benefit from ongoing guidance in community organizing and horticulture, I also encourage you and your fellow garden members to apply for the February Community Garden Mentor training. This two-day program will give you the basics to sustain an active garden, and then you'll become part of a great network of fellow Mentors supporting community gardens (and each other!). Finally, don't forget to order berry bushes and other tasty treats from the 4-H plant sale, and pick up unique vegetable and herb seeds at the Seed Swap at Old Salem.

Order plants by March 3!
It's that time of year again - Forsyth County 4-Hers are selling asparagus, berry bushes, grapes, strawberries, herbs, flowers, and more! You may
order your plants online, or
print out a paper form and mail or hand-deliver it to Forsyth County Cooperative Extension. Either way, please mail your check to Forsyth County 4-H, 1450 Fairchild Rd., Winston-Salem NC 27105. Your order must be received by March 3. Plan to pick up your plants on March 31
st between 8:30 am - 6 pm.

Growing Blueberries
 Are you ordering blueberry bushes from the 4-H Plant Sale? Great! Blueberries are tasty and nutritious. However, these bushes are finicky about their soil, so plan to get a soil test now and start preparing your site.
Blueberries grow best in well-drained soils and need an unusually low, or acidic, pH - between 4.8 - 5.2. Otherwise, the bushes cannot take up nutrients properly. It is unlikely that your soil has such a low pH naturally, so you should either lower the pH of your site with wettable sulfur (you'll need a soil test to calculate how much!), or build a raised bed with sphagnum peat moss and a well-drained topsoil mix. Drainage of heavy clay sites can be improved by incorporating peat moss or well-decayed pine bark fines.

¡Feliz 2017, horticultores!
En enero hay demasiado frío para cultivar tomates afuera, pero ¡es un tiempo ideal para fortalecer sus habilidades en la organización comunitaria, planificar qué va a sembrar en el año que viene, y obtener semillas y plantas para sembrar en la primavera! El Programa de Huertos Comunitarios tiene oportunidades excelentes para ayudarle a preparar para una temporada exitosa. Para empezar la Serie de Horticultura Sostenible, ofreceremos 'Introducción a los Huertos Comunitarios,' un taller básico sobre cómo empezar o fortalecer a un huerto/jardín comunitario. Si su huerto beneficiaría de consejos en la organización y la horticultura, les aliento a Ud. y a los otros miembros de su huerto a aplicarse para la Capacitación para Mentores de Huertos Comunitarios en febrero. Este programa de dos días le dará el conocimiento básico que necesita para sostener un huerto activo, y entonces se hará parte de un grupo excelente de otros Mentores, quienes apoyan a los huertos comunitarios (¡y uno a otro!). Al final, no se olvide pedir arbustos de bayas y otras cosas sabrosas de la Venta de Plantas por 4-H, y obtener semillas únicas de hortalizas y hierbas en el Intercambio de Semillas en Old Salem.

¡Pida sus plants a más tardar el 3 de marzo!
¡Los jóvenes de 4-H están vendiendo espárrago, arbustos de bayas, uvas, fresas, hierbas, flores, y más! Puede pedir sus plantas en línea, o imprimir un formulario de papel y mándalo o tráigalo a la Extensión Cooperativa de Forsyth County. En cualquier caso, por favor mande su cheque a Forsyth County 4-H, 1450 Fairchild Rd., Winston-Salem NC 27105. Hay que pedir sus plantas antes del 3 de marzo. Tiene que venir a traer sus plantas el 31 de marzo entre las 8:30 am - 6 pm.

Cultivando Arándanos Azules
¿Piensa comprar arbustos de arándandos azules de la Venta de Plantas de 4-H? ¡Excelente!
Los arándanos (moras) azules son sabrosos y nutritivos. Sin embargo, estos arbustos necesitan condiciones especiales con respeto al sitio (o sea, la tierra en que se los siembran). Así que, obtenga un análisis de la tierra ahora y empiece a preparar el sitio.
Los arándanos (moras) azules prosperan en tierra con buen drenaje y un pH muy bajo (ácido) - entre 4.8 - 5.2. Si no, los arbustos no pueden absorber los nutrientes que necesita. Es improbable que su tierra tiene un pH tan ácido naturalmente. Por eso, debe usar azufre ('wettable sulfur' en inglés) para bajar el pH de su sitio (necesita un análisis del suelo para calcular cuánto necesita!) o puede construir una cama elevada con una mezcla de musgo 'sphagnum' ('sphagnum peat moss' en inglés) y tierra con buen drenaje. Se puede mejorar el drenaje de tierra arcillosa incorporando este musgo 'sphagnum' o corteza de pino bien podrido ('pine bark fines' en inglés).
