Notes from Ms. Dahnke...

New Day Resolutions

Many are firm believers in New Year's resolutions.  I used to try to make these until I realized that omitting certain things in my life for 365 days was just setting myself up for failure.  I know myself well enough to know that if I make things off-limits, the magnetic pull towards them becomes even greater for me and eventually, I just give in to the temptation.  I am also one of those people who consider New Year's Eve just another day.  If I do attempt to watch the ball drop at midnight in Times Square, I usually have to set the alarm so that I wake up in time to do so.  It never fails, though, every year, I read about the top resolutions that are made by well-intentioned individuals.  In early February, the paper revisits these resolutions only to discover that about ten percent are still sticking to these self-made promises.

What if, as Christians, we made New Day resolutions?  After all, each day is a gift from God.  A new day provides us with new opportunities that seem more easily accomplished than resolutions that span an entire year.  Year after year, the top resolutions include losing weight, exercising more often, using better time management and organization skills, and reconnecting with friends.  These are fairly self-explanatory, but as Christians, these can also take on a more significant meaning.

Obviously, losing weight is always a popular resolution.  For most people, this only refers to lowering one's body mass index or the desire not to have clothes shrink as they hang in the closet.  If one were to look at this a bit further, however, it could also include the weight that each of us carries around on any given day.  God has promised us that if we come to Him and ask forgiveness for our sins, He will take that burden from us and will not only forgive but will also forget.  I must enjoy the extra burden of my sin because I have a tough time forgetting what I have done.  Sadly, I also find it difficult to forget what others have done to me.  I could list the things I did wrong yesterday, but there is no way that I can go back and get rid of any of them on my own.  I need the promise of a new day to try to get it right.

Another resolution is to exercise more often.  Routine is everything with this promise to a new you.  Many of you are familiar with the phrase, "if you don't use it, you lose it."  Whether you like it or not, you know that this is true, especially when you have done something strenuous and then try to get out of bed the next morning.  In our Christian walk, this is also true.  Throughout our lives, there are many mountain top experiences which serve to re-energize us and get us going for awhile.  Then, we hit a slump and things tend to slide.  We get out of the routine of Bible reading and prayer that we had previously established.  Just like a good workout revives us for the day's activities, so does time spent with God.  It gives us the feeling that we can accomplish anything that comes our way and we do not have to do it alone.  "Exercise daily - walk with God."

As we all know, during the month of January, storage bins and other organizational items are quite popular in store ads.  Apparently, the advertisers are trying to help with the resolution to become more organized so that our time is better spent on other things.  I sometimes wish that they would also provide the person who would actually fill those storage bins, but obviously, that is up to me.
Similar to a storage bin, each new day is a time to reorganize our personal lives and our walk with God.  Organizing our lives might include daily devotions, constant prayer, a time of meditation, and a chance to focus on those things that matter most including family, friends, career or education.

Finally, there are many who make a resolution to reconnect with friends and family.  Many use Christmas cards to catch up with people and will include a little blurb at the bottom of the form letter to state that they should get together soon.  But, everyone is busy and everyone has a hectic schedule so this usually happens accidentally rather than as a result of planning.  Each day is a new day to connect with those people who are most important.  It is also a good time to reconnect with our Heavenly Father.  Spending time with Him in prayer and meditation does not necessarily take the highest priority when we are preparing for exams, attending meetings, or preparing for a big event.  Yet, coincidentally, our time becomes even more limited when we leave Him out of our plans or try to function without Him as a part of our day.

A new semester is upon us here at BCA. For our new students, teachers, and administration, we can proudly say that we have made it through the first semester. The eighth graders can say that they are on their way to graduating in a few months and entering high school. Time moves on quickly and the best we can do is approach each new day as a day to begin again with the guidance and support from our Heavenly Father. Fortunately for us, He sees the big picture and knows that nothing we fret about on earth, is permanent.

I wish you the best in keeping those promises to yourself. Most importantly, take a self-inventory and decide to do things a little bit differently today so that you can continue to seek to become the person God has created you to be.

Middle School Dance
The 6 - 8th graders will have a semi-formal dance at the conclusion of National Lutheran Schools Week. The dance will be held in our school cafeteria on Fri., Jan. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. More information will follow.

Annual St. Jude Math-a-thon
We will once again participate in the Math-a-Thon beginning the middle of February.  This is a unique opportunity to raise some money for St. Jude as well as sharpen up some of our academic skills.

We are looking for a volunteer who would like to be responsible for handling that at our school.  If this is something that interests you, please call the front office so that you can look at the materials.

The main function is to distribute materials in a timely manner, answer questions, and keep track of donations and counting that money while working closely with the business office. Please call the front office if you are interested in fulfilling some of your volunteer hours by helping with this worthy cause.

New BCA Lion Logo
If you have ridden around to the back of the school, you may have noticed the gym doors and the beautiful lion that was painted on there. Thanks to Mr. Ron for taking this on and doing such a fantastic job!

Reminder of Ways We Announce Weather-Related School/ Child Care Closings and Delays

With wintry weather upon us, we want to remind families on ways they can learn about our decision for BCA school closings or delays.

Please tune into one of the three local TV stations or radio stations (ex., WDEF/92.3) for our  announcement and check the main page of our website - BCALIONS.org - as well as our BCA Facebook page.

We make our own decision concerning closings and delays, so we do not always follow Hamilton County's decision, as their decisions are often based on bus transportation.

In addition, we may not always have a chance to send out a school-wide email or text, depending on the time that the final decision is made on a full-day closing, so again, please check the above sources to learn of closings or delays.

Please note that when BCA is closed, this also includes the Christian Children's Center for infants through Pre-K4.

On days that have a delayed opening, BCA (kindergarten - 8th grade) and the Christian Children's Center (infants - Pre-K4) will open at the same time. There will be no morning care for days that have a delayed opening time. We will open at the time that is announced.

BCA Alumni Reunion - Aug. 2017
In honor of the the school's 130th anniversary (1887 - 2017), we will be holding a BCA/Lutheran School Alumni Reunion event. This event will be held in late August (postponed from the original date in February).  Please look for more information this spring.

We are in the process of gathering contact information on alumni, and while we have several alumni here now whose children currently attend BCA, there are many others who are not currently associated with the school. If you know of anyone who is an alumni, please have them contact Emily Patton in Admissions at [email protected] so that they may receive an invitation to this special event.
