Hamilton
Coming to Coronado
Hamilton
New York City-based Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History has chosen Coronado High School to participate in its unique Hamilton Education Program, culminating with the school's 11th grade American History students attending a performance of the Emmy Award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton, when it makes a stop at ASU's Gammage Auditorium.

In advance of the show, students will undertake special projects as part of a 3-5 day curriculum on the Founding Era.  They will also submit questions for possible use at a Q & A session with Hamilton cast members the day of the show.  Congratulations, Coronado and social studies teacher Justin Slover, on providing your students with this unique learning opportunity!

Mohave Hosts Robotics Tourney robot

Thirty, FIRST Lego
®
League (FLL) robotics teams take over Mohave Middle School's gym and cafeteria tomorrow as the school hosts a competition that will qualify the nine top teams for the state FLL championship competition at ASU next month.

The tournament is entirely organized and managed by Saguaro High School students, who also mentor Mohave's and other SUSD's robotics teams during the school year.

The competition will feature teams' solutions to a real-world problem of their choosing that deals with hydrodynamics and the finding of,use and disposal of water.  Teams will also compete, robot-to-robot, on table playing fields to perform tasks around transporting water.

   Here Comes
Pima Traditional!

A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the new Pima Traditional School.  The student body, past principals and members of the SUSD Governing Board were on hand to celebrate.
This week, the first demolition work began.
When students start the 2018-19 school year next August, it will be in their new school!
 art He(ART)y Congratulations!

The Arizona Art Education Association has named Saguaro High School art teacher Michelle Peacock its 2017 Outstanding Secondary Art Educator.  Ms. Peacock received the award at the organization's annual conference in Sedona last month.  She has provided outstanding art instruction to SUSD students since 2002, first at Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center (now Echo Canyon), then Mohave Middle School and, now, Saguaro for the past 10 years.  Ms. Peacock's award letter reads:  "This accolade is testament to your dedication to quality art education in the state."  We agree!

bowl'Bowl'-ing for Vista del Camino

Supporting the community was on the minds recently of art students at Mohave Middle School and Coronado High School.  With the encouragement of former SUSD Fine Arts co-coach Janet Blum and under the direction of teachers Jordan Ray and Cara McGraw, students created ceramic bowls that were sold November 29 at the annual Alli Ortega Empty Bowls event at Scottsdale Community College.  Empty Bowls raises money, through Scottsdale Community Partners, for Vista del Camino, a city of Scottsdale social services program.

"There is no better outlet than thru the arts for students to positively contribute to the community they live in," said SUSD Fine Arts Coordinator Nathan Johnston.  "Seeing our SUSD students continue this 20+ year partnership, making art that is sold to raise funds to fight hunger in our own community, is powerful beyond measure, and should inspire us all to be better for each other."

marchArcadia Marches Away with State Title

Congratulations to the Spirit of Arcadia Marching Band, which won the Division III ABODA State Marching Band Championship last month!  Coming off a 2A victory the previous week in the AZMBA state competition, director Jan Gardner's 66-strong ensemble performed "Statuesque," in which six marble statues, portrayed by the Arcadia Color Guard, come to life in a garden setting.

This is only Arcadia's second year of competition.  What's up next?  The February 10, 2018 Parada del Sol through downtown Scottsdale.  Grab a chair and reserve your curbside seat!
CatsSpeaking of Performances ...

How does winning five consecutive state football championships sound?
State 4A titles in 10 of the last 12 years?

That's what the Saguaro High School Sabercats have done, the most recent championship coming last weekend versus Salpointe Catholic, 120 miles down the road in Tucson.  Coach Jason Mohns and his assistants had the Cats well prepared.  They were impressive on both sides of the line, leaving the Lancers wondering what hit them in the 28-7 drubbing.

The team's season may be over, but Coach Mohns will lead the West team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, TX on January 6, 2018.  Word on the street is that he's in for another accolade this Sunday at the Arizona Cardinals game ... ssshhhhhhh!

diversityDiversity Conference
Inspires Coronado Students

When the Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA) gaveled open its 2017 conference last month in Phoenix, 10 Native American students who attend Coronado High School were there.

The DLA is Arizona's leading diversity education organization.  The Coronado student leaders took part in workshops that examined how to use emotional intelligence to build rapport and unity, and ways of developing skills to be able to approach critical conversations on issues that divide our communities.
January Kindergarten Roundups
KRUs

It may only be December, but it's not too early for the parents of children who will enter kindergarten next year to learn more about the school that will welcome them in August.

"Kindergarten Roundups" are held at Scottsdale Unified School District's elementary and K-8 schools in advance of following school year. The next Roundups are coming up in January, followed by a final series in March.  Learn more about your child's school well ahead of the time to help make the transition to kindergarten easier ... on everyone!

At Kindergarten Roundup, you will visit a kindergarten classroom, find out about the kindergarten curriculum and how your student will spend the school day, and meet school staff.   Parent drop-off and pick-up practices, attendance policies and lunch schedules will be shared, and you will find out how you can be involved in your child's education and in the life of the school.   You will also be able to register your child for the coming school year.   We look forward to welcoming the Class of 2031 on August 7, 2018!

If you are the parent of a child who will not be five years old on or before August 31, 2018, but will turn five between September 1 and December 31, 2018 and you believe your child is ready for kindergarten, SUSD offers early entrance testing for a $75 fee in June and July.  To find out more about kindergarten early entrance, call Lisa Duncan, SUSD Community Education, at (480) 484-7932, or visit the SUSD website, susd.org.
