Message from Principal Kuminka
Thank you Coebourn Green Committe for organizing the service project that supports green efforts and helps children in need. We worked with the Second Chance Toys organization to collect used clean plastic toys to donate. Instead of filling the landfills with a perfectly used plastic toys, these toys will be donated to children who could benefit. Check out more pictures at #greencougars

As the email notification stated prior to winter break, on January 3, 2017, students will begin a new special schedule, which teachers will send home prior to winter break. Mrs. Gina Douglas is joining the Coebourn staff and will be teaching PE to students two days per week. Please read the letter from Mrs. Douglas within the newsletter. Library will not occur during the related arts block. However, teachers will schedule an alternative time for children to access the library to check-out and check-in library books. Mrs. Micklo is currently a paraprofessional at Coebourn working with students. She will be assisting and teaching students how to utilize the library and access books.

The Coebourn Chorus and Band sounded fabulous during the December Winter Concert. Miss Talley and Mr. Stadnicki did a fine job preparing and teaching the students. Thank you families for making sure the students attend the practices consistently.

January 2017

Welcome back, Coebourn families!
We hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break.

The PTL is busy working on lots of things for the new year, but first we'd like to thank Jen and Mike Boyer for another successful Holiday Shop! Our students had a lot of fun shopping for their gifts. Thank you to the parents that came in to help set up and to help wrap over 3000 gifts! Everyone's hard work is greatly appreciated.

**The PTL is looking for leftover Christmas wrapping paper. If you have wrapping paper that you'd like to freecycle we'd be glad to take it.

The 2017 Variety Show, "Blast From the Past" will be held on Saturday, February 11th at 7:00pm in Sun Valley's Auditorium. Admission is free. Concessions will be available for purchase before and during the show. Let our performers know you've enjoyed the show and their hard work by purchasing a Candy-gram!  All proceeds benefit Coebourn's 5th Grade Class. Join us for a trip down memory lane!

Coebourn's Family Bingo Night - Friday, February 24th. Doors open at 5:30, first game starts at 6:00. Cost is $5 per person. We'll also be selling $5 bundle packets for the serious Bingo players! Food and Raffles before and during the game. So, take a night off from cooking, play some Bingo and win some of the great prizes!

Our first PTL Meeting of the New Year will be this Thursday, January 5th at 6:30 in the Library.

COEBOURN READERS

Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts!
The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. With Scholastic Reading Counts! students have a Lexile®-based independent reading program that tracks their success on the books they read, in and out of school. This technology-based program creates a personalized and engaging learning environment that ensures independent reading accountability. Scholastic Reading Counts intends to MOTIVATE students with suggested reading choices that match their interests and reading levels. This program is available to all 2nd through 5th grade students. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Students may choose an independent book and when finished t take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be  answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the book read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book does not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will  be recognized both at school and at Brookhaven Borough Council!
Stay tuned......More to come next month about READING COUNTS!!

GO GREEN!!!

Coebourn Classroom Connection
The Wonderful World of  5th Grade
5th grade was busy the first few months of the year. We worked on analyzing pieces of literature to determine theme, characters traits and comparing and contrasting different characters between stories. Along with analysis in literature, we discussed point of view and how the point of view can determine different aspects of a story. 5th grade never takes a break from education and progress is being made each and every day.

LOST & FOUND

There are hoodies, coats, sweaters and jackets looking for their owner!!
Have your child take a look if you are missing something.
Meet Coebourn's New Phys. Ed. Teaher -  Mrs. Douglas

My name is Gina Douglas (formerly Spinelli). I am so excited to be coming back to Penn-Delco School District and being your child's health and physical education teacher.  I formerly worked at Coebourn and Aston Elementary Schools in the 2008-2009 school year.

I wanted to share a little bit of my background with you before my start in January.  My degree is in Kinesiology with a focus on Health and Physical Education and a minor in Health Sciences. The specialized courses included work in understanding children's physical development and how they learn motor skills, scientific aspects of physical fitness and sports, as well as effective teaching techniques and progressions for a variety of lifetime sports and fitness activities. I also have a Master's Degree in School Health Education all obtained from West Chester University.  Lastly, I am CrossFit Level 1 certified, CrossFit Kids certified and am working on becoming certified on the DaVinci BodyBoard.

As a teacher with more than 11 years of experience, I recognize that children are at different developmental levels, with a variety of needs and interests. For this reason, in every class, I attempt to provide all of the children with "teaming" experiences that are both beneficial and enjoyable. Each lesson will also be adjusted to take into account the wide range of skill and fitness levels that characterizes children in elementary school.  My goal is to help children find a variety of ways to enjoy being physically active so that they will be able to get all of the physical, emotional, intellectual and social benefits that come to someone who is physically active.

I live with my husband Paul in Ardmore but we are currently looking for a home in West Chester.  We are also expecting our first child in late May. So many exciting things happening this year!

I look forward to joining the Coebourn Family and cannot wait to meet all of the students. I hope you had a Healthy and Happy Holiday.
Happy New Year!
A NOTE FROM THE NURSE

The tradition of making New Year's resolutions began with the ancient Romans who made promises each January 1st to their god Janus.  Janus, who is always shown as having two faces, one looking to the past and one looking to the future, is the Roman god of new beginnings.  In the same way, we can look back to some of our unhealthy choices of last year and resolve to make healthier choices in the New Year.
An easy resolution you can make that will keep you feeling your best in 2017 is to replace one hour of TV or computer time with one hour of physical exercise.  Exercise will increase your endurance, strength, and flexibility. Endurance develops when you regularly get aerobic exercise that allows the heart to beat faster. This type of activity strengthens the heart and improves the body's ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells. Improving strength doesn't have to mean lifting weights. Instead, you can do push-ups, stomach crunches, or pull-ups to help tone and strengthen muscles. Stretching exercises help improve flexibility and allows muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion. Besides becoming healthier, regular exercise will allow you to sleep better and better handle physical and emotional challenges like running to catch the bus or studying for a test.
So, start the New Year off right, get off the sofa and make a promise to yourself to get moving.
