During the 1944 election Republicans began a whispering campaign about FDR's health. The President was gravely ill, they said, and might not survive another term. Roosevelt defused this speculation with an energetic burst of late campaigning. But the rumors were rooted in fact. The state of FDR's health during the last years of his life has been the subject of considerable historical investigation and debate in recent decades. This program will focus on the President's health during the latter years of his presidency.
Dr. Harry S. Goldsmith is the author of A CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE: THE HEALTH AND DEATH OF FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. He has been a professor of surgery for 35 years and a student of medical history throughout his life. Dr. Goldmith has invented several surgical procedures including an operation to treat Alzheimer's disease and a procedure to treat acute spinal cord injuries. He is an author of 227 papers or book chapters, has edited three surgical texts, and has received honorary degrees from two Chinese universities. He is a surgeon, worldwide lecturer, and advisor on the application of his surgical procedures.
Dr. Steven M. Lomazow is a board certified neurologist with a practice in Belleville, New Jersey. He is President of the Medical History Society of New Jersey and Neurological Association of New Jersey, Adjunct Professor of History at Kean University in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Vice-President of the WWII Book Club of New Jersey, Trustee of the Roosevelt Library, and member of the National Council of the Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. His book, FDR'S DEADLY SECRET, co-authored with Eric Fettmann, was published by Public Affairs in 2010.
