The Wild Side: Wildlife Woes

Gull killed at Lake Crabtree by fishing line |
Did you know that thousands of animals are injured or killed every year from litter? Carelessly disposed of items like balloons, cigarette butts, and plastic bags can be mistaken for food items by wildlife. Animals can get their head or body stuck in food containers or plastic six pack rings. One of the main litter culprits is monofilament fishing line.
Monofilament fishing line is very strong and can last 600 years in the water! Once an animal becomes entangled in the line it is nearly impossible for them to break it or untangle themselves from it. If they do not choke themselves trying to break free, they may suffer a slow death from starvation or swallow the fishing line along with a hook and suffer internal injuries. An easy solution to the monofilament fishing line problem is recycling.
Here at Lake Crabtree we provide monofilament fishing line recycling bins at various locations around the park, that are convenient to fishing areas. We also provide a handy take along recycling container, which can be found in a dispenser at the boat rental docks, that can later be emptied into one of the larger bins. Recycling the fishing line keeps it out of the environment and out of landfills, where wildlife can also become entangled in it.
Why not join us in keeping Lake Crabtree a safe place for wildlife, by helping clean up litter at our Fall Big Sweep event on October 7, from 9:00 a.m.-noon. You could also bring the young ones out for our Take a Child Outside Week program, Fishing Fun, on September 26, 10:00 a.m.-noon, where they can get an early start at practicing responsible fishing, as well as having a lot of fishing fun!
Pre-registration
is required for both of these programs. Visit our website to register online.
