Miller Avenue Streetscape Project Update Week of August 28 - September 1, 2017

What happened last week:
The contractor marked the layout for the striping of the road and continued to raised the sewer system manholes, as is standard practice in a street paving project.

What is happening this week:
Work crews plan to finish raising the sewer system manholes up to the level of the newly paved roadway. The contractor is also set to finish striping the road. Work crews are installing bike racks on Miller Avenue this week and next week, as well as performing the remaining miscellaneous clean-up throughout the site.

What to expect in the next few weeks:
The contractor will work on the landscape irrigation system in anticipation of upcoming planting. The contractor will install the pedestrian bridge connecting to the County pathway in the Marsh area. Work crews will install check valves and two tide gates in the Marsh area. During the week of September 5, the contractor will clean the sewer service lines, which will require temporary lane shifts around work in manholes. Cleaning the Miller Avenue sewer lines is in preparation of the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) work, which is a method used to repair sewer system pipes. This work will take place at night, as established in the contract, when sewer flow rates are reduced and is anticipated to begin in mid-September. Additional details will follow in the upcoming weeks.

Please Note: There will be parking restrictions and lane shifts, to allow for final paving treatments, striping and other miscellaneous items.

Mill Valley Police are issuing citations for speed violations.
Speed Advisory

Please be advised that in response to reports of excessive speeds on the newly paved roadway, Mill Valley Police Officers will be monitoring traffic speeds and issuing citations to violators.

For your safety, the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers on Miller Avenue, please obey the posted speed limit signs.

City to Install New Tidal Flap Gates in the "Marsh" Section of Miller Avenue

One of the main components of the Miller Avenue Streetscape Project involves improving our infrastructure, particularly as it relates to the flow of water. With direction from the City Council, the City has placed a high priority on upgrading sewer pipes and storm drains and implementing best practices to reduce flooding and pollution of our network of waterways.

In the upcoming weeks, City contractors will install new tidal flap gates and replace the existing 30-inch diameter culvert with two 48-inch diameter culverts with headwalls at the outlet between The Redwoods and Pickleweed Apartments.

Flap gates are typically attached to culverts that are placed through tidal dikes. The flap gates allow a stream to drain normally during regular flows, but prevent high tides from backing water up the stream channel.

The new, increased capacity and flap gates is intended to help to minimize flooding during some storm and high tide events. More information about drainage, sewer, and flooding improvements related to the Miller Avenue Streetscape Project can be found here.
Where Can I Park?

Please see below for a list of parking options. Construction may impact some of these areas - please look for signs.
  • 4 Hour Parking - 4 hour parking is available in the Public Parking lot located at 411 Miller Avenue, across the street from Whole Foods.
  • 2 Hour Parking - 2 hour public parking is available on the street when not needed for construction (please look for signs), and is also available in the front section of the Whole Foods parking lot located at 400 Miller Avenue.
  • Other Parking - Parking will be permitted in the Parkway and Gateway as permitted by the construction schedule. Please look for signs to indicate parking availability in these areas.
  • Private Lots - Many businesses have private parking lots. Call ahead and ask if you can park in their private lot.
  • Downtown Employee Parking - Parking is available in the lot at 38 Miller Avenue or in the lot behind D'Angelos if you are an employee with an e-stickers and cannot find a place to park downtown. The Police Department will not issue citations in those lots for vehicles with e-stickers while construction is happening.
