First Day Of Saturday School
On Saturday, September 16, 2017, St. Sarkis Church's Suzan & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School opened it's doors for the 2017/2018 Scholastic year.
Another school year has started after a long summer vacation. Students and families were reconnected and were excited to see new faces both, within the students body and the faculty. The hallways became alive again, there were hugging and smiley faces all around.
Back to School is the start of a new and fresh beginnings. At this time the students were pleasantly greeted by our Rev. Father Nareg Terterian, a team of dedicated teachers and the principal.
Rev. Father Nareg Terterian and the principal, after warm welcoming greetings and the morning prayers, the students were led by their teachers to their individual and beautifully decorated classrooms.
In the Chaderjian Hall,where the student body gathers to be dismissed. The principal, took the opportunity to thank them for attending Armenian school and tried to make them understand the importance of attending an Armenian school. She made a point by saying "It is our mission, to continue the legacy of our beautiful Armenian language, culture and the rich history".
By working hand in hand and closely, with a group of dedicated,motivated and caring teachers, and build strong relationship with the PTA, can result,in great achievements.
The PTA is the back bone of our school, they had so many fundraiser activities during the years, and they have more ideas for this upcoming year, please encourage them, give your support by attending to their functions This year's student's text books and the work books were donated by the PTA.
We are looking forward to an exciting and academic year, in a loving and nurturing environment.

Screening of Documentary Film at St. Sarkis Church
|
On Friday, September 15th, the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church in Douglaston and the ARS Erebouni New York Chapter were very excited to host the screening of Bared Maronian's award winning Documentary Film, "Women Of 1915".
The movie depicts the life journey of brave women survivors of the Armenian Genocide, illustrating the unimaginable indignities the women endured and the horrors they witnessed. Among the Armenian heroines featured in the movie are: Aurora Mardiganian, Hatoon Bazarian, and Aguilera Tatoulian. The documentary also brings to light the enormous efforts of the European and American Missionaries who arrived to various regions of Historic Armenia, and rescued countless women and orphans. The selfless missionaries were, Maria Jacobsen, Karen Jeppe , Mary Louise Graffam. The film is shown in many cities in the US, Canada, France, Great Britain, Australia and is scheduled to be shown in Latin America, the Middle East, and other countries.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from the chair lady of Erebouni chapter, Ungh. Lena Orangian . She then introduced the sound track artist Hooshere Bezdikian Kaligian, whose heartfelt performance moved the audience.
The 90 minute film captivated and educated the attendees, evoking an array of emotions.
At the conclusion of the film, Mr. Baronian, who had just flown in from hurricane effected Florida, spoke about the challenges of making the movie and participated in a Q&A session with the crowd.
Following the discussion, the audience was invited to a lavish wine & and cheese reception prepared by the Ladies Guild and ARS members.

Megerian Family of St. Sarkis Church Community Donates A Special Rug to His Holiness Aram I
|
The Megerian family, members of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church of Douglaston were honored to present His Holiness Aram I with Megerian's Signature Lori Design Armenian Rug, which was also presented to Pope Francis, Catholicos Karekin II, Charles Aznavour, George and Amal Clooney and other notable individuals for their contributions to the Armenian Culture.
Catholicos Aram I welcomed Raffi, Toros and John Megerian at his guest residence in Holy Echmiadzin on Tuesday September 19, 2017. Archbishop Sebouh Sarkissian, Prelate of Tehran, Iran, Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian, Prelate of Aleppo, Syria and Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor of St. Sarkis Church also attended the meeting.
John and Raffi Megerian explained to Catholicos Aram I a brief history of the Megerian Family's plight from the Armenian Genocide and the significance of the Lori Design related to the age old tradition of Armenian Rug Weaving.
Catholicos Aram I commended the Megerian family for their enormous efforts in spreading the Armenian Culture in the world through the art of Armenian rug weaving. He also congratulated the Megerian Family on their business' 100th Anniversary and the accomplishments of the last century of Armenian rug weaving culture and traditions. Finally, Catholicos Aram I invited the Megerian family to Antelias, Lebanon to introduce the culture and traditions of Armenian rugs to the large Armenian community of Lebanon.

TO THE CORINTHIANS (10.18 - 11.10)
For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.
Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine.

Իսկական ընտրուածը ան չէ՛ որ ինքզինք կը գովէ, այլ ան՝ որ Տիրոջ կողմէ կը գովուի: Սակայն, յուսամ քիչ մը ներողամիտ կ՚ըլլաք եթէ անմտօրէն ես ալ պարծենամ, ըրածներս յիշեցնելով ձեզի: Իսկ դուք համբերութեամբ լսեցէք:
Ես ձեզի հանդէպ Աստուծոյ նախանձախնդրութեամբ լեցուած՝ կ՚ուզեմ որ միայն Քրիստոսը սիրէք, ինչպէս մաքուր կոյս մը որ իր սէրը կը վերապահէ անոր որ իր ամուսինը պիտի ըլլայ: Բայց կը վախնամ որ ձեր միտքը ապականի եւ հեռանաք Քրիստոսի հանդէպ ամբողջական եւ մաքուր նուիրումէն, ճիշդ ինչպէս Եւան խաբուեցաւ օձին խորամանկ սուտերէն: Կը վախնամ որ նոյնքան դիւրութեամբ ընդունիք ոեւէ մէկը որ մեր քարոզածէն տարբեր փրկիչ մը, ձեր ստացած Հոգիէն տարբեր հոգի մը, կամ ձեր ընդունած Աւետարանէն տարբեր աւետարան մը կը քարոզէ ձեզի:
Չեմ գիտեր թէ ես ձեր այդ նշանաւոր «առաքեալ»ներէն բանով մը ետ կը մնա՞մ: Թէպէտ ճարտար խօսող մը չեմ, բայց խօսածս գիտեմ: Եւ կարծեմ ատիկա ապացուցանեցի ձեզի ամէն ինչով: Արդեօք սխա՞լ ըրի որ Աստուծոյ Աւետարանը ձրիօրէն քարոզեցի ձեզի եւ ինքզինքս խոնարհեցուցի՝ ձեզ բարձրացնելու համար: Ձեւով մը միւս եկեղեցիները կողոպտեցի, ապրուստս անոնցմէ առնելով, որպէսզի ձեզի ծառայեմ ձրիօրէն: Ձեր քով եղած ատենս նոյնիսկ երբ կարիքի մէջ եղայ՝ ձեզմէ ոեւէ մէկուն բեռ չեղայ. Մակեդոնիայէն եկած եղբայրները հոգացին պէտքերս: Եւ ինչպէս անցեալին զգուշացայ, ասկէ վերջ եւս ամէն կերպով պիտի զգուշանամ ձեզի բեռ ըլլալէ: Բայց Քրիստոսի ճշմարտութեամբը, որ իմ ներսիդիս է, կ՚ըսեմ՝ թէ այս բաներով պիտի պարծենամ ամբողջ Աքայիայի մէջ, բոլորին պատմելով:
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO ST. MARK (10.1-12)
Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
"What did Moses command you?" he replied.
They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ
ԸՍՏ ՄԱՐԿՈՍԻ (10.1-12)
Յիսուս Կափառնաումէն Հրէաստանի կողմերը եկաւ՝ Յորդանան գետին միւս կողմէն անցնելով: Դարձեալ խուռն բազմութիւն մը իր շուրջը հաւաքուեցան, եւ Յիսուս սկսաւ անոնց ուսուցանել իր սովորութեան համաձայն:
Փարիսեցիները զինք փորձելու նպատակով մօտեցան իրեն եւ հարցուցին. «Ոեւէ մէկը իրաւունք ունի՞ իր կինը արձակելու»:
Յիսուս պատասխանեց. «Մովսէս ձեզի ի՞նչ պատուիրեց»:
Անոնք ըսին. «Մովսէս արտօնեց բաժանման թուղթ տալ կնոջ եւ արձակել զայն»:
Յիսուս ըսաւ. «Մովսէս ձեր անհանդուրժող նկարագրին պատճառով այդ օրէնքը սահմանեց ձեզի: Մինչդեռ սկիզբէն, ստեղծագործութեան ժամանակ, Աստուած արու եւ էգ ստեղծեց մարդիկը եւ ըսաւ. "Այս պատճառով այրը պիտի ձգէ իր հայրն ու մայրը եւ իր կնոջ միանայ, եւ երկուքը մէկ մարմին պիտի ըլլան": Հետեւաբար այլեւս երկու չեն, այլ մէկ մարմին: Ուստի ոեւէ մէկը թող չբաժնէ անոնք որ Աստուած միացուց»:
Երբ տուն դարձան, աշակերտները նոյն նիւթին մասին դարձեալ հարցուցին: Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց. «Եթէ այրը արձակէ իր կինը եւ ուրիշ մը առնէ՝ շնութիւն ըրած կ՚ըլլայ անոր դէմ: Նոյնպէս ալ, կինը եթէ ձգէ իր ամուսինը եւ ուրիշ մը առնէ՝ շնութիւն ըրած կ'ըլլայ»:

PAREGENTAN OF THE HOLY CROSS OF VARAK
This Sunday, September 24, is the Paregentan (Eve) of the Fast of the Holy Cross of Varak. Monday to Friday are fasting days leading up to next Sunday, September 25, when the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak will be commemorated.
FEASTS OF SAINTS FEBRONIA, MARIANA, AND SHOUSHAN
Next Tuesday, September 26, the Armenian Church remembers Febronia, Mariana, and Shoushan. The best known of the three is Shoushan, daughter of Vartan Mamigonian and great-granddaughter of Sahag Bartev. She was educated under the tutelage of St. Sahag and her mother, Sahaganoosh. Her father's life and martyrdom influenced her to become a devout and faithful Christian. Her birth name was Varteny, but she was called Shoushan because of her extraordinary piety. She was married to Vazken, a son of a Georgian king, and had three sons and a daughter. After the death of her father-in-law, her husband became power hungry, went to Persia, renounced the Christian faith and returned to Georgia with another wife, and tried to force Shoushan to renounce her Christian faith. Even after years of imprisonment and torture she refused to renounce the faith for which her father had fought so valiantly.
Febronia was a nun of extraordinary beauty at Nisibis in Mesopotamia. She was offered to be spared from persecution and torture if she renounced her religion. She refused and was brutally martyred.
Although the daughter of idol worshipers, Mariana was raised by a woman who was secretly a Christian and was baptized at age twelve. At the age of fifteen she confessed to her father that she was a Christian. She refused to renounce her religion, and refused the offer of marriage by a local official telling him that she was "married to Christ." She was tortured and martyred.
