News From St. Sarkis Church
Լուրեր Ս. Սարգիս Եկեղեցիէն
50 Years of Priesthood and 53 Years of Sacred Music
Reported by Deborah Agopian and Lena Felice

On Sunday , June 4th, the St. Sarkis Church Community was honored with the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, who attended Church Services as he occasionally does. However, this Sunday was different because June 4th marked the 50th anniversary of His ordination to the holy priesthood (June 4, 1967). The Pastor, the Board of Trustees and Auxiliary bodies of the Church worked together to host a surprise event to celebrate this important milestone. Although The Armenian Prelacy is planning to commemorate this paramount achievement formally, in the month of November,  this Sunday's event was a prelude to the upcoming one in November.

Veh Bezdikian, the Master of Ceremonies, began the program and spoke about his experience with Serpazan. He then invited Harry Seoylemezian who spoke on behalf of the Executive Council of The Armenian Prelacy by highlighting the leadership qualities of Serpazan in various parishes of the Armenian Prelacy. Mr. Krikor Nercessian, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, also spoke kind words and emphasized how Serpazan has a positive impact on St. Sarkis Church.

Fr. Nareg Terterian thanked everyone for organizing this wonderful event. He especially thanked Serpazan for the inspiration he provides through his exemplary leadership and presented Serpazan with a cross pin engraved with the date on the back.

His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian reminisced his days as a Seminarian and how he was a candle bearer 50 years ago when Oshagan was becoming a priest. He also enthusiastically spoke about the 50th ordination anniversary celebration honoring His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan this Fall. Following his encouraging speech, Naomi Megerian gracefully recited an anthology of Armenian poems.

Oshagan Serpazan thanked everyone and expressed how this verse from Matthew 22:37 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." kept Him going for all these years.

The Main Hall was filled with parish members indulging in live music played by Mr. Ashot Soghomonyan while savoring an appetizing luncheon. The Organizing Committee tended to every detail of the event and made it look effortless in such a short time.

One of the highlight of the day was the performance of  Datevig  Choir conducted by Ms. Haigouhi Megerian. A group of seventeen boys and girls sang the Sharagans. It was like watching beautiful angels sing. Not only did these children's parents feel proud, but the performance was moving for all of the parishioners and clergy as well.  Datevig  was recently formed and in this short period of time, these children delivered a beautiful selection of Armenian Hymns. Serpazan was so moved that He expressed his wish to be the first one to celebrate the Divine Liturgy with  Datevig  choir singing Badarak.

Another reason to celebrate was to recognize Gail D'Onofrio. Gail served as the choir organist at St. Sarkis Church and recently retired after 53 years of service. The Pastor remarked that it is rare to find a parishioner for 50 years that continues to serve and inspires others.  Deacon Frank Kabarajian communicated Gail's incredible contributions to the St. Sarkis Community.  Deborah Agopian, as a young voice, spoke about how Gail's been an inspiration in her life and presented her with a gift on behalf of the choir. The Ladies Guild also acknowledged her with a bouquet of flowers and cake. Mrs. D'Onofrio sincerely thanked everyone including the choir directors throughout the 53 years along with Juliette Milian and Haigouhi Megerian as organists. She also thanked all the Pastors of St. Sarkis Church (Der Asoghik Kelejian, Hayr Anoushavan and Der Nareg Terterian). She also thanked Serpazan for the certificate and concluded her speech by thanking her beautiful family.

The day couldn't have ended any sweeter. A selection of tasty desserts was served at each table along with His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan's anniversary cake.

Early Bird Registration Ends This Sunday
As the demand for our program continues to grow, so do we!
This year, we are again offering two weeks at St. Sarkis Summer Camp. We have extended the camp by an hour (dismissal 3 o'clock) and have added breakfast providing three nourishing meals (Breakfast, Lunch & Snack) each day!

The camp provides a physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy environment in which young Armenian-American Christians can grow and flourish as they learn about and develop a deeper understanding of their Armenian faith and culture.

In achieving its goal to offer all youth a fulfilling experience, this year's program focuses on a well-rounded blend of Armenian religion, music, arts, drama and fellowship, together with sports and Zumba.  Special activities include rock wall, game truck, laser tag, water slides, magic show, fun bus, petting zoo, dinosaur rocks, bubble master, Lego workshop and cooking classes. We will also be taking trips to the Cradle of Aviation and bowling at AMF Sheridan Lanes.
St. Sarkis Camp invites all children to experience a place where Armenian faith and culture is nurtured and nourished, a place every child can call "home."

The campers are under the constant supervision and care of qualified counselors. Our instructors and staff strive to help each child reach his/her potential through success-oriented experiences.

We look forward to seeing our campers and welcome new faces!

In efforts to make the 12th year of St. Sarkis Summer Camp an unforgettable experience, we are seeking sponsors for various activities. We thank you for your generosity and support. Donations can be made at the church office or by calling 718.224.2275.

A READING FROM THE SECOND BOOK OF KINGS (2.1-15)
And it came about when the LORD was about to take up Elijah by a whirlwind to heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here please, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. Then the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; be still."
Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be still." Then Elijah said to him, "Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." And he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on.
Now fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. Elijah took his mantle and folded it together and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so." As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.
Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (4.25-30)
I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed-only Naaman the Syrian."
All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

Requiems
Remembrance Of The Prophet Elijah
This Sunday, June 11th, the Armenian Church commemorates Elijah, the Messianic prophet of the Old Testament recorded in 1 and 2 Kings. Elijah was the greatest prophet in the Old Testament and therefore his feast day falls on a Sunday. He appeared along with Moses at the Transfiguration as the prophet of life and the new covenant; Moses was representative of the old covenant. The Armenian Church (like all the Eastern churches) holds Elijah in the highest esteem. Most importantly, Elijah did not experience death, but was taken to heaven, like the Holy Mother of God. He is mentioned in the Armenian hymn Ee Verin, sung during the Requiem Service.

"Receive us in Jerusalem above, in the dwellings of the angels, in Eden, the paradise where Enoch and Elijah live worthily resplendent in dove-like purity and in old age. O merciful Lord, have mercy upon the souls of ours who have fallen asleep."
(From the Armenian hymn Ee Verin Yerousaghem (Receive us in Jerusalem above), sung during the Requiem Service.)

Saints Hripsime And Gayane And Their Companions
This Monday and Tuesday, June 12 and 13, the Armenian Church commemorates the virgin saints Hripsime and Gayane and their companions. Thirty-three nuns, led by Gayane, left Rome and sought refuge in Armenia hoping to escape the Roman Emperor who desired one of the nuns, the beautiful Hripsime. In Armenia, King Dertad became captivated by Hripsime's beauty and sought to wed her. She refused. Enraged, the king had Hripsime (and the other nuns) imprisoned and tortured to death.
When Gregory was released from his imprisonment in the deep pit (Khor Virab) he built chapels over the relics of the nuns, which Catholicos Sahag Bartev later renovated. During the 7th century, churches were built over both sites. The church dedicated to Saint Hripsime, built by Catholicos Gomidas, is considered to be an architectural masterpiece and influenced the future course of Armenian architecture. Catholicos Gomidas also wrote a sharagan (hymn) in their memory-the well-known Antsink Nviryalk (Dedicated Beings).
The two churches, as well as a third (Shoghakat) are in the city of Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat), not far from the complex of buildings that comprise the Holy Mother See of Etchmiadzin, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
