A Notice from BC Assessment
BC Flood and Wildfire Impact
Many parts of BC h
ave been affected by flooding and wildfires in 2017. We appreciate that as a property owner, you may have questions regarding your upcoming 2018 property assessment.
How will this potentially affect my 2018 assessment?
Any damage affecting the value of your property that is not repaired or replaced by October 31, 2017, will be considered when determining your 2018 assessment value. Damage occurring this year does not affect 2017 assessments (received this past January) or your 2017 property taxes.
BC Assessment understands that flooding and wildfires may have had a serious impact on some farming operations. BC Assessment and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will review options to help farms affected by flooding or fires. Farmers are encouraged to contact their local BC Assessment offices to review details of their farming operations.
Identifying Property Damage
Using a number of sources such as mapping, emergency service notifications and self-reporting, BC Assessment will identify affected areas, and will be proactive in obtaining the most accurate information available. Having the most accurate information will help ensure that your 2018 property assessment is fair and accurate.
BC Assessment will initiate contact with owners of properties identified as damaged or potentially damaged. Being sensitive to the fluidity of the situation, we anticipate most contact will occur in September and October.

BCEDA has been fortunate to be working with FortisBC on the Economic Disaster Recovery Hotline. When FortisBC announced that they would work with us to support businesses impacted by the wildfires they also submitted an application to the BC Utilities Commission to get approval to provide relief to those impacted residences and businesses from communities that had been evacuated. We are pleased to inform you that the application has been approved. Please make sure you get other businesses to call the hotline. The more information we have the easier it is for us to encourage additional supports. The information will also be used to assist in the broader economic recovery effort of impacted communities.

A message from Fortis BC regarding billing relief to their customers who may have been impacted by wildfires.
Message from FortisBC
To help support our customers who have been impacted by wildfires, FortisBC is providing billing relief for approximately 12,000 natural gas and 2,400 electricity customers who experienced evacuation orders this summer.
On August 25, FortisBC received approval from the BC Utilities Commission to provide a credit for charges incurred during the period customers were under evacuation orders. For impacted natural gas customers, this includes the basic, commodity, storage and transport and delivery charges. For impacted electricity customers, this includes the prorated monthly customer charges and applicable per kilowatt hour charges. In both cases, this includes all consumption charges incurred during the evacuation period.
FortisBC has also paused collection-related activities for customers in these regions, including calls to customers to remind them of outstanding amounts and are waiving late payment charges on impacted accounts.
To make sure the billing relief process is simple, eligible customers will automatically receive a credit for the evacuation period on an upcoming bill. Our billing and customer service systems teams are working to cross reference billing data with evacuation information received from municipalities, the Province and its Operations team. We appreciate our customers' patience and understanding as we work through this process.
As people return home, we want our customers to know they can contact us if they have concerns about their bills or their services. We are always willing to work with our customers on the specific circumstances that are affecting their account and are willing to work with them, if needed, on flexible payment arrangements on any previous or ongoing charges.
Customers with questions or concerns about their bill or their service are encouraged to contact us at:
1-888-224-2710 (natural gas) or 1-866-436-7847
