14th Annual Festa in Honor of the Sicilian Black Madonna del Tindari
Each September 8, a group of people gathers at the Phoenix Bar, the former site of a chapel to the Madonna of Tindari created by Sicilian immigrants who first celebrated her feast day in 1905. People arrive to tell stories, recite poetry, and dance to the rhythms of Italian folk music as a way of creating community and a new sense of the past. Once again, the Phoenix Bar owner Brenda, the bartenders, and the patrons have graciously opened their space for this event.

The Philip V. Cannistraro Seminar Series in Italian American Studies
New Italian Migrations to the United States: Vol. 1: Politics and History since 1945
Laura E. Ruberto, Berkeley City College
Joseph Sciorra, John D. Calandra Italian American Institute
Until now, Italian immigration from 1945 to the present has been an American phenomenon too little explored in our histories. In this new collection (University of Illinois Press, 2017) Laura E. Ruberto and Joseph Sciorra assemble essays by an elite roster of scholars in Italian American studies. Collectively these interdisciplinary works offer a radical rethinking of conventional historical periodization about Italian migration that makes claims to a practical cessation of immigration after the Johnson-Reed Act of 1924. These essays also serve to deflate the standard narrative of arrival-acclimation-assimilation from first-generation immigrants to the third generation. The editors will be joined by contributors James S. Pasto, in discussing the complex transformation of identity in Boston's North End; and Donald Tricarico, in tracing the development of Italian American Guido youth culture in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.

EXHIBITIONS AND ONGOING EVENTS

September 6 through 12
Film: Spettacolo
Every summer, villagers in a tiny hill town in Tuscany transform their piazza into a stage and residents play the role of themselves. Monticchiello's annual tradition has attracted worldwide attention, but with an aging population and a future generation more interested in Facebook than farming, recent performances might be the last. Spettacolo tells the story of Teatro Povero di Monticchiello, interweaving episodes from its past with its modern-day process as the villagers turn a series of devastating blows into a new play about the end of their world. Passage: The Art of Yorgos Giotsas
Passage is an artist's vision of the movement of immigrants. Yorgos Giotsas uses materials of the earth to bring a tactile feel to his work, thus engaging us in the journey. His images of immigrants in New York City in the early 1900s could be our grandparents from Magna Grecia (Southern Italy). Yet he does not stop there as he moves us visually through the passage, with heart-wrenching yet hopeful images, of immigrants today landing in Sicily.
