In granting recertification, the U.S. Coast Guard has endorsed the organization's operations through August 2018. Recertification entails a very thorough review of CIRCAC's programs, initiatives, and activities to determine their strict adherence with the mandates set out under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The Coast Guard reviews reports, committee work, communications, activities and overall CIRCAC's direction and effectiveness in meeting obligations and fulfilling the mission. Every three years, the federal review process is open for public comment. This year the U.S. Coast Guard received 45 public comments supporting CIRCAC's recertification.
"We never take our recertification for granted and have set high standards for the organization. Meeting these standards requires a constant awareness, evaluation, and reevaluation of goals and objectives and making necessary adjustments," said CIRCAC Executive Director Mike Munger. "But fundamental to our success is public support. We appreciate the many letters that were written on our behalf and will continue to work hard to warrant the public's trust."
In addition to ongoing program work and responsibilities, CIRCAC participates as a member of numerous committees, teams, and working groups and plays a key role in the Incident Command System during oil spill response and drills in Cook Inlet. Among CIRCAC's current initiatives and priorities is assessing Cook Inlet's subsea pipeline system.
CIRCAC is a federally mandated citizens' organization, formed under the Federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA90). Its mission is to represent citizens in promoting environmentally safe marine transportation and oil facility operations in Cook Inlet. In pursuing this mandate, the Council strives to help protect the environment, fisheries, economic vitality, cultural resources and recreational interests of Cook Inlet.
