Munich Memorial Opens

In 2014 we pledged to support the construction of a memorial in Munich to honor the victims of the 1972 Summer Olympics terrorist attack.

Since that time we have participated in design meetings, watched as the builders broke ground to begin construction, and listened to the surviving family members as they shared with us their personal experiences with grief after losing their loved ones. We have been honored to be involved in each step towards the memorial's completion.

Now, as we approach the 45th anniversary of the attack, the Munich Memorial Project is complete. Next week GSD Board Members and staff will travel to Munich to participate in a remembrance ceremony, after which the memorial will be unveiled and open to the public.

This project has been a collaborative effort between The City of Munich, The Federal Republic of Germany, the International Olympic Committee, the German Olympic Sports Confederation, and The Foundation for Global Sports Development.
"Munich '72 and Beyond" Nominated for an Emmy

When GSD first became involved in the Munich Memorial Project, we were honored to be a part of something which could bring healing to the sporting community.

GSD's Executive Board members, Dr. Steven Ungerleider and David Ulich, realized this was an important moment in history, and they decided to  document the project and create a film to educate future generations about the attack and subsequent events.

The short documentary,  Munich '72 and Beyond, was born from this. We have been pleased to share this film around the world and humbled by its reception. This summer we learned the film had been nominated for the 38th Annual News & Documentary Awards in the "Outstanding Research" category. We congratulate all of the other nominees and eagerly look forward to attending the awards ceremony on October 5th.

"Munich '72 and Beyond" Digital Screening

Tuesday, September 5th will mark the 45th anniversary of the Palestinian terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic Team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.  This attack would become a critical piece of Olympic history and the first televised act of modern terrorism.

To honor the lives of the 11 Israelis who were killed in the attack, we are offering viewers the chance to watch the Emmy-nominated film Munich '72 and Beyond online during September 1-15th. Our hope is that younger generations will become familiar with the story and understand its impact on today's world.
