Sonoma State's Seawolves women's volleyball team won the NCAA Division II West Regional tournament this past weekend and will be heading to Louisville, Ky., Dec. 4-6, for the Elite Eight to compete for the Division II national championship. Memorable Sports Moment

Memories of Wendell Kim

I was saddened to learn recently that an old friend, former Giants third base coach Wendell Kim, has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease and is not doing well.

Kim is only 65 years old, but first started experiencing short-term memory loss in his mid-50s. He's now unable to talk, get up and move around. He can no longer live a normal, healthy life that most of us take for granted.

Kim, of Korean-Hawaiian descent, first surfaced as a top prospect in the Giants farm system in the 1970s, making it as high as Triple A in 1978, when he hit over .300 for the Giants affiliate, which then played its games in Phoenix.

As is the case with many coaches and managers who make it in the big leagues despite not having great playing careers, Kim finally got his shot in the "show" when then-Giants skipper Roger Craig promoted Kim to his coaching staff for the memorable NL pennant-winning season of 1989. What a way that must have been to break into the big leagues for this 5-foot-5 pepper pot. The Giants and A's played in the memorable Earthquake Series that year, and Kim was right in the middle of the action.

Kim stayed with the club as the third base coach when Dusty Baker took over, and again was a central character behind the scenes during an amazing resurgence for San Francisco in 1993, as the Giants thrilled their fans with a 103-win season under new ownership after nearly leaving for Tampa the year before. I always remember him windmilling his arms at third base as he sent runners home when balls were smacked into the outfield. Wave-'em-in Wendell we used to call him.

I got to know Kim quite well during his eight-year stint with the Giants. We sat next to each other a few times on the team plane, and it was a treat to hear his stories about players, games and experiences in baseball's bush leagues. He was an excellent storyteller who used all the tricks of the trade to make his tales that much more compelling to hear.

Kim also was tireless, relentlessly positive, joyful, proactive and always full of encouragement. He also was a ready and willing ambassador for the Giants and the great game of baseball throughout his career. He would participate in speaking engagements and baseball clinics throughout the Bay Area. Wendell always had a special way of connecting with people, especially kids, and always seemed to be in motion, a hyperactive but positive spirit.

Whenever I think of Kim these days, I envision the little guy standing just off to the side of home plate, hitting ground balls and fly balls off his fungo bat while barking out encouragement to the guys on the diamond. All the Giants players I got to know over the years just loved the guy. He eventually moved on, coaching in Boston with the Red Sox and in Chicago with the Cubs. He spent a lot of time with the game's great players for many years.

We can only hope that this luminous spirit hasn't been completely dimmed by his terrible malady, and that he is in no great physical discomfort. Wendell Kim's presence was always an important part of those Giants teams that we were fortunate to watch for so many years.
