American Family Agents Are Employees Federal Judge Says
|
A federal judge in Ohio recently issued a ruling that may have a profound effect on carriers that write policies through captive agents. US District Court Judge Donald Nugent ruled in favor of a class of almost 7,000 American Family agents who claimed they were misclassified as independent contractors, when they actually qualified as employees under ERISA.

NAIC's Cybersecurity Model Law Nears Final Adoption
|
After nearly two years of extensive debate, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is expected to approve a new cybersecurity model law soon.
The developing model law has been a focus of considerable Big "I" advocacy, education, and grassroots attention. The improved version is considerably more reasonable and less onerous for independent agents - for example, it does not include troubling elements of the cybersecurity regulation enacted in New York regulators earlier this year.

- IIAN's Young Agents Gather For YA Day August 25 At Quarry Oaks
Young agents from across Nebraska gathered on August 25 at Quarry Oaks golf course near Ashland, to learn state-of-the-art digital marketing strategies from nationally-recognized expert Chris Langille, network during lunch, and have some fun with afternoon golf contests and games. The event was the first of three scheduled this fall by IIAN's new nextgen leaders: Elliot Bassett, Omaha; Brian Bradley, Lincoln; Doug Brummels, Kearney; Cody Krull, Minden; Zak Morken, Ogallala;and Cole Williams, Norfolk.

IIAN's Nominating Committee, chaired by IIAN Past President Mike Jones of Omaha, has finalized its slate of candidates for the 2017-18 association year: President - Greg Zimmer,Lincoln; Vice President - Sandra Ryks, Papillion; Secretary Treasurer - Todd Anderson, York; Director (2 Open Positions) - Adam Backer, Omaha; Elliot Bassett, Omaha; Josh Marshall, Omaha; Tony Purvis, Kearney; Zak Morken, Ogallala; and National Director - Mark Lisko, Omaha.
Officers and Directors will be elected at the annual member meeting on October 12, 2017 at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln, during IIAN's 110th Annual Convention, and by absentee ballot prior to the meeting.
