The center provides experiences that enrich and enhance each child's cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical, and creative development. Within the program's daily schedule, each child has the opportunity to create, explore, learn problem-solving techniques, develop personal interaction skills, and learn concepts through firsthand experiences.

Last month marked the three year anniversary of the Hepworth Higher Education Center, and we love being surrounded by such wonderful CSI faculty, staff, and students. The separation between CSI, Idaho State University, Boise State University, and the University of Idaho has never been narrower. Please don't hesitate to stop by if you're ever in the neighborhood. We would love to see you!
Over the last couple of years, the CSI Higher Education Center members have visited several CSI classrooms to give 5-10 minute presentations on the value of continuing education beyond CSI graduation. These visits were so successful that the CSI Higher Education Center would like to offer similar presentations this year. We provide advising, admissions, and transfer services for future CSI graduates to obtain bachelor's degrees from any one of our institutions.

The CSI Pep Band plays fun music for CSI basketball games and is looking for a bassist and a guitar player. Each band member receives annual scholarship money, $1,500 for non-majors and $2,000 for music majors. We'll have auditions at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 in the Fine Arts band room, room 164.

The CSI Foundation is preparing our Annual Report to send out to the community. We have decided to make the centerfold a photographic representation of "CSI in a day." To do that WE NEED YOUR HELP.

The U-pick garden at the College of Southern Idaho has been so popular lately that vegetable and berry availability varies day by day, depending on how much ripe produce has been picked on any given day. Generally speaking right now, the garden features tomatoes, onions, green beans, eggplant, lots of jalapenos, yellow peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and summer squash - all for 75-cents a pound.
Ripening soon will be watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and winter squash. Apples will also be ready in September. Lots of raspberries are now available for picking at $3 per pound.
Picking times are now 8 to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. No picking appointments are necessary.
The U-pick garden is located on CSI's Breckenridge Endowment Farm on North College Road. The CSI Ag Department will provide containers for picking but visitors should bring their own containers for taking berries home. For more information including any updates to picking times or produce availability, please call 732-6401.

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess" Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.
This production, directed by CSI's Shane Brown, features Camille Barigar as Roxie Hart, Johanna Stagge as Velma Kelly, Dusty Blackburn as Billy Flynn, Lori Henson as Matron Mama Morton, and Blake Burton as Amos Hart. The show also features choreography by Keesha Olander, musical direction by Lori Henson, and costume design by James Haycock.

Enhanced Concealed Weapons Class

Get informed and learn what your rights are when it comes to carrying a gun. This preparatory class, instructed by Buz Chapman along with Sgt. Kurt Thorpe, will cover Idaho gun laws, responsible firearm ownership, and safety issues. Four hours of classroom instruction at the CSI Jerome Center and three hours of practical instruction at the Jerome shooting range will emphasize trigger control, target alignment, holster requirements, shoot positions, and other safety practices. You must furnish your own gun that is in compliance with concealed weapon laws, safety glasses, ear protection, holster, mag pouch, and 100 rounds new ammo. Upon successful completion of the class, you will be provided with a Certificate of Completion and all the forms you need to apply for a concealed weapons permit at the sheriff's office. Please do not bring your firearm onto the CSI Jerome Center campus.

Discover the many benefits and joys of training with your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with; they respond well to household routines and have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs. You and your dog will learn the 10 Steps from the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program, designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.

Become a solid team with your dog through fun exercises. In this 5-week class, you will gain confidence in off-leash control of your dog on the agility course. Advanced agility will teach send outs, touches and directional cues to help you improve your speed and accuracy on the agility field all while having fun with your dog. Dogs should have prior experience on all AKC agility obstacles to participate in Advanced Agility.

Intro to Glass Blowing/Torchworking

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of torchworking borosilicate (hard) glass, a.k.a. Glass Blowing. During the semester, students will be introduced to shop equipment, setup, maintenance, tools of the trade, and safety, all while learning the fundamental basics of hands-on torch working by molding solid glass into shapes and figures, creating pendants, beads, and tubular vessels. This course is designed for the individual who is interested in the shop, processes, and skills to make functional solid and blown glass projects, jewelry, and art.

Kombucha is known as the "Immortal Health Elixir" by the Chinese, originating in the Far East around 2,000 years ago. Kombucha is a fermented beverage of tea and sugar that contains a colony of bacteria and yeast, resulting in a beverage with tremendous health benefits such as improved digestion, weight loss, increased energy, cleansing and detoxification, immune support, reduced joint pain, and cancer prevention. The Kombucha Brewing Workshop will use hands on instruction to explain how to brew, how to flavor, how to store, and how to share Kombucha. Attendees will not only leave with knowledge of the brewing basics, but also a take home Kombucha Brewing Kit that includes SCOBY (live Symbiotic Culture of Bacterial Yeast in starter liquid), large glass container, cheesecloth, tea, sugar, and recipes. In this class learn how to brew this healthy beverage in your own home for pennies, instead of paying the costly store price of $3-$5 per bottle.

You will learn the fundamentals of torchworking with borosilicate glass - melting and manipulating glass over a bench-top torch while exploring the artistic possibilities of this molten glass media and shaping into glass pendants for art, jewelry, or even gifts. Additionally, participants will learn some of the basics of tools, safety, equipment and techniques of this versatile and popular art form.

Ballroom dance has enjoyed a revival in recent years and is now one of the most popular dance styles around. With its grace, variety, and active social element, it's easy to understand why it continues to capture the imagination. So if you love the idea of twirling with confidence, learning a new life skill, and above all enjoying yourself, our adult ballroom classes are for you. You will learn beginning figures and technique for the waltz and the jitterbug/swing. LeRoy and Deborah have been dancing together for over 40 years. The dance lessons they have taken are legion. The investment in shoes is staggering. They have taught social dance in the area for a number of years and are looking forward to meeting people interested in developing this skill.

Teach your faithful dog in an exciting and fun format. Through positive reinforcement and behavior modification, you will socialize and train your dog in basic obedience and beginning agility training. Goals of this class include better mannered and socialized dogs and more educated and empowered owners. This class is taught by a licensed clinical counselor with 30 years of experience as a dog obedience instructor. Class will be held outdoors near the Expo Center Lawn - but will move to an adjacent indoor location in cases of bad weather.

Understanding Photography: The Art of Painting with Light

Join award-winning photographer Drew Nash in learning how to use your digital camera beyond its automatic settings and pick up some tricks of the trade along the way for capturing truly beautiful photos. Participants will need to own their own DSLR cameras. During the class, you will learn how to understand exposure, the key functions of a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, composition, lens selection, white balance controls and fill flash. Students will explore the CSI campus making images as they apply what they've learned. Lastly, Drew will provide critiques of photos and discuss basic post-production work of select student images and answer burning photography questions. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the arts of photography and follow the light with Drew.
DIY Woodworking Projects: Custom Plaques with Antique Finishing

In this class, you will start with a blank slab of wood and then transform it into something special using a variety of different antiquing and distressing techniques. If you have ever been interested in woodworking and are looking for a great place to start, this is it. Familiarize yourself with different pieces of woodshop equipment and how to use them safely. Begin by choosing one of five custom sign design projects and then complete your sign by learning how to build frames and distress using chisels, scrapers, and worm holing. Additional activities will include: staining, painting, chalk painting, glazing and various finishes. Leave class with a handy new skill set as well as a new one of a kind sign to take home.

Forest Therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. In Japan it is called "shinrin yoku," which translates to "forest bathing. "Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. Sandra Bosteder has master's degrees in Physical Education Athletic Administration and Health Education. Her interest in Forest Therapy was piqued while researching healthy lifestyles that went beyond and deeper than what many health programs provide and benefited more diverse physical ability levels. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. In this class you will learn the skills necessary to be able to work on yourself, your family, friends, and pets. You will also learn the basics of energy, the history of Reiki, what Reiki is and is not, and have lots of hands-on practice. You will receive your Level I Reiki certificate upon completion of this class.

The promise of yoga postures includes balance, strength, flexibility, and the ability to calm the mind. If you are new to yoga or had yoga in the past and want to refresh the basics, this class is for you. Please come with an empty stomach, loose clothing, bare feet, and that spark for a new and exciting class, and we will get started. We suggest bringing your own yoga mat, but can furnish one if necessary. Note, there will be no class on October 5 due to holiday closures.

Don't miss the chance for you and your family to see your little dancer live on stage with a professional dance company this Christmas holiday! The College of Southern Idaho will be holding auditions for the annual production of The Eugene Ballet's The Nutcracker, which will be performed on December 12 and 13. Children aged five to 18 are encouraged to audition.
Auditions will take place in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the CSI Campus on Thursday, September 7. There will be a $5 audition fee. Checks payable to Eugene Ballet.
The Eugene Ballet requests that all participants arrive at the audition at least 15 minutes prior to the audition time and be ready to dance (dressed and stretched). Late-comers will not be allowed to audition. Please make sure that children audition for the proper roles.
Boys and girls are welcome to audition for all parts except "Waltz of the Flowers", which is only open to advanced female students. Girls should wear class uniform, or a solid colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes, and hair should be secured in a bun. Boys should wear white t-shirt, black tights and black ballet shoes. All students audition in flat technique shoes EXCEPT "Waltz of the Flowers", who audition on pointe.
Rehearsals will fall on Saturdays in October and November. Students must be available for all rehearsals and the performance on November 30.
Nutcracker audition times are as follows:
4:00 Baby Mice Ages 5-7 no height requirement 1 yr ballet pref.
4:30 Angels Ages 7-9 must be under 4'6" 1 yr. ballet min.
5:00 Bon Bons Ages 9-11 must be under 5' 2 yr. ballet min.
6:15 Party Guests Ages 11-15 must be under 5'2" 3 yr. ballet min.
8:00 Flowers Ages 12-18 5'2" and over 3 yr. pointe min.

PERSI members who are actively at work are eligible to purchase additional term life insurance through NCPERS. Assuring adequate Life Insurance coverage is an important part of financial planning. Click here to look at the brochure which details the coverage available, and you are encouraged to review carefully, to see if you choose to take advantage of the financial security that this coverage can provide. You may enroll for this affordable coverage only during the annual open enrollment period beginning September 1 and running through November 30, 2017.Simply fill in each section of the enrollment form, print, sign and date the printed form and return it to Anita Tatge in HR no later than November 30, 2017. The United Methodist Magic Valley Ministries 2017 Fall Retreat will feature Voices Against Violence (VAV). Topics covered in the retreat include domestic violence and the trauma it causes, services provided by Voices Against Violence and volunteer opportunities. Speakers will include Donna Graybill (Executive Director of VAV), Katelyn Schwennen (VAV Counselor), and Jessi Boyer (VAV Volunteer Coordinator).
The retreat will be held on Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Jerome United Methodist Church. Cost will be $10 and lunch will be a provided. To RSVP please contact Pastor Penny Hodges at 208-308-0609 by September 14.
