More than a Bookstore... a Community.
Santa, Sales, and Socks -- Oh my!

The year's days are almost spent, and I cannot wait for our first snowfall. The days' harsh winds are particularly biting, but with snow everything seems softer and more inviting. With shelf upon shelf of books to curl up with or to gift, we hope Page One is a stop for your holiday shopping. (We love the Icelandic tradition of gifting books on Christmas Eve and then staying up all night reading them.) We also have a  bountiful (perhaps, overflowing?) selection of bookish gifts, collectibles, games, and more!

Page 1 Books is more than just a unique bookstore: it's a community. With our knowledgeable booksellers, collection of resident authors, and loyal locals, we have built a fellowship of readers, writers, and enthusiasts. Stop by soon and discover what our local, Independent bookstore has in store for you.

Sincerely,
Page 1 Books

"
 Love awoke one winter's night
And wander'd through the snowbound land,
And calling to beasts and birds
Bid them his message understand.

And from the forest all wild things
That crept or flew obeyed love's call,
And learned from him the golden words
Of brotherhood for one and all."

Each month we're going to highlight a few books on a subject of particular relevance.

November: Hope, Compassion, & Change
Hope in the Dark, by Rebecca Solnit
Drawing on her life as a writer and activist, on the events of our moment, on our deepest past, Rebecca Solnit argues for hope-hope even in the dark. Solnit reminds us of how changed the world has been by the activism of the past five decades. Offering a dazzling account of some of the least expected of those changes, she proposes a vision of cause-and-effect relations that provides new grounds for political engagement in the present.

Other reads:

Freedom is a Constant Struggle,  by Angela Y. Davis
In these newly collected essays, interviews, and speeches, world-renowned activist and scholar Angela Y. Davis illuminates the connections between struggles against state violence and oppression throughout history and around the world. Facing a world of outrageous injustice, Davis challenges us to imagine and build the movement for human liberation. And in doing so, she reminds us that "Freedom is a constant struggle."

Change of Heart,  by Nick Cooney
Scientific research has generated a wealth of information on how people can be persuaded to alter their behaviors, yet this body of knowledge has been largely ignored by those working to improve society. This book brings this information to light examining more than eighty years of empirical research in areas including social psychology and communication, distilling it into a psychology primer for anyone wanting to spread progressive social change.

A is for Activist, by Innosanto Nagara
A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and more. This engaging little book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children to action while teaching them a love for books.
