Chaplain James Hughes

Civil Air Patrol Chief of Chaplains
Change of Command

The Civil Air Patrol will hold a Change of Command ceremony for their Chief of Chaplains on September 2. Chaplain (Colonel) James Hughes (MCA Life Member) will be relieved by Chaplain (Colonel) Charlie Sattgast (MCA Member) .

Chaplain Hughes has served as Chief of the CAP Chaplain Corps since February 2014. During his tenure he spearheaded numerous successful initiatives to enhance and advance the ministry of CAP chaplains. Ch Hughes started by taking a fresh look at all aspects of the Chaplain Corps' mission and purpose, and then set a series of yearly goals for the three years of his term as Chief. These included a complete evaluation of the Chaplain program, the resourcing of all CAP units with Chaplain Corps personnel, the revitalization of the Cadet Character Development Program, and the provision of Chaplain support for all CAP missions, activities, and training events.

During Ch Hughes' term the CAP Mission Chaplain program was fully re-engineered to better equip Chaplain Support Teams to respond to CAP-specific missions, FEMA and other Federal-led missions, and to better prepare chaplains to provide ministry support to the Air Force - Active, Reserve, and Guard.

In early 2017 Ch Hughes led a team to the Center for Character and Leadership Development at the US Air Force Academy to study USAFA's approach to Character Development with their Cadet Corps. This team is in the process of completing a full revision of CAP's Cadet Character Development Program. Phase 1 and 2 will consist of 24 virtues-based lessons taught over a 2-year cycle that focuses on character traits. Phase 3 will be project and leadership based for more advanced cadets. Phase 4 will be an advanced character development project for field-grade cadet officers.

Ch Hughes has also partnered in a beta-test with Air Force ROTC to explore how CAP chaplains can provide support to ROTC detachments (related article).
Chaplain Charlie Sattgast

The incoming Chief of Chaplains, Chaplain Charlie Sattgast, has served as CAP's D epu ty Chief of Chaplains for the past two years. Ch Sattgast will begin by completing the initiatives started by Ch Hughes. His new goals for the coming year include a full re- engineering of CAP's Chaplain Corps Region Staff Colleges, which provide ongoing  training to the members of the CAP Chaplain Corps, and taking a close look at recruiting and retention of Chaplain Corps personnel.

The MCA congratulates the CAP Chaplain Corps for their dedication and ministry. Thanks to both Chaplain Hughes and Chaplain Sattgast as they continue in their roles as servant leaders.

An original docudrama from EWTN, Called and Chosen, depicts the life of a former Maryknoll missionary in Taiwan, a young man who would eventually die - at the age of 38 - on the killing fields of Vietnam as he was administering the sacraments and pulling others to safety. This extraordinary priest died, not because he cared about the politics of war, but because he cared about the men who were dying on those fields; men who needed God and the sacraments; men who needed what only a Catholic priest who was unafraid to die could give them.

Chaplain Capodanno was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic and self-sacrificial actions on the field of battle. He died September 4, 1967, 50 years ago, while seeking to rescue two wounded Marines only yards from an enemy machine gun nest.

Save the Date: Join Us for a National Day of Prayer September  8-10, 2017

September 10, is World Suicide Prevention Day. This weekend, the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention invites faith communities across the nation to pray for those whose lives have been touched by suicide. Pray that we can all grow in faith that brings hope, and hope that brings life.

Whether in your church, your temple or synagogue, your mosque, or even by yourself, join us.

As we pray, let's also pledge to be aware of those around us who are struggling with any of life's challenges--especially those affected in any way by suicide- and to be there for them in their times of need.

Be there in person, be there with care, be there with prayer.

On this Faith-Hope-Life Day, we pray for emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. Just as we regularly pray for persons with physical concerns, such as cancer or heart disease, we especially pray this day for those dealing with mental health concerns and feelings of hopelessness, and for the people who love and care for them.

It's time to break the silence around suicide and help all who struggle. Please join us.

Because, where there is faith there is hope, and where there is hope there is life.

So Faith-Hope-Life Day, let's be there-in person, with care, with prayer.
