Wainwright Intermediate School
130 Alameda Ave., Fircrest

Come explore the new Wainwright Intermediate School in Fircrest and discover how design, color, shape and light are used to create special learning spaces that meet students' social and educational needs in a flexible learning environment.

The new Wainwright is one of 14 schools being remodeled or replaced thanks to the $500 million Tacoma Public Schools construction bond voters approved in 2013.

Opening experience highlights include:
  • A short welcome ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Special music provided by Wainwright Intermediate School and Foss High School students.
  • Ask the architect. Find architect Noah Greenberg of DLR Group in the library from 6:30 to 7 p.m. to talk about what went into the design of the new school.
  • Touch, draw, wiggle. Many learning spaces will be open for exploration, demonstrations, and even some hands-on activities. Science teacher Deanne Crichton will show off her new second-floor science space while John Armstrong of Open Arts Studio takes over the first-floor DaVinci Lab to showcase this special "maker space." Community members can also try out classroom touch screens and "wiggly chairs."
  • Take a walk down memory lane on the third floor where you'll find the old Wainwright wildcat statue, past yearbooks and other historical displays. Alumni and new families are invited to join the Potters, a fourth-generation Wainwright family, to share about Wainwright's past, present and future.
Please note that parking is very limited. Carpooling and walking are encouraged for those who are able. The small front parking area off of Alameda will be reserved for drop-off and vehicles with handicapped placards and plates. General parking options include the Fircrest United Methodist parking lot and Wainwright staff parking lot, both accessible from 1018 Columbia Ave., and nearby street parking.
