From Mr. Robinson

Happy New Year, Boulevard Families!

I trust everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy Winter Break and is now thrilled that the kids are back in school!  I am very happy to report that the students have had a great week of learning.

Winter benchmark assessments for all grades will take place throughout the month of January.  These assessments are used to determine progress and to assist teachers in differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of each student.

While the week began with unseasonably warm temperatures, the more characteristic cold weather has returned.  As the students will go out for recess on most days, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately, including winter boots, hats, coats and mittens.

Sincerely,
Neal Robinson

Boulevard Kalahari Fundraiser
Thursday, January 19, 2017

So far we have over 20 rooms reserved by Boulevard families/friends on Thursday, January 19 (no school the following day) at Kalahari Water Park in Sandusky, Ohio! Though the discounted rate is no longer guaranteed, Kalahari will honor the discount as long as they have availability (which they did as of last week).  The discounted rate for Boulevard families and friends is $119/night. This includes a resort room for one night and water park admission; plus Kalahari will donate $10/room to the PTO. With so many Boulevard people there, this is sure to be a great time! To make a reservation, call 877-525-2427 and ask for the Shaker Heights School District-Boulevard Elementary PTO Fundraiser room block.  Hope to see you on the water slides!

Our Feature Country: Egypt

Assalam Alaikum! عليكم  السلام ! Egypt is our spotlighted country of the week. This Arabic-speaking country is on the continent of Africa, with a population of 83 million people. Egypt borders Sudan, Libya, Israel and the Gaza strip as well as the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Egypt is home to the Nile River, the longest river in the world. It is a very dry country made up mostly of the Sahara desert (the world’s largest desert). Egypt has a very long and rich history. The ancient Egyptians created the writing system called hieroglyphics, which look like pictures. One of Egypt’s many pyramids is the Great Pyramid of Giza, known as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The most popular sport in Egypt is football (soccer).

Next Friday, January 13th will be an International Families Potluck Dinner and Game Night! All families are invited to join us in Boulevard’s multipurpose room from 6:30-8PM. Please bring a dish to share and a serving spoon. We kindly ask that dishes contain no pork, beef, or peanuts. After dinner, the gym will be opened for organized games. We will also have a variety of board games available to play. Bring your whole family, meet your friends, and make new ones! We hope to see you on this fun-filled evening. RSVP by the flyer sent home or email bradford_a@shaker.org or lasheen_j@shaker.org with your name and number of guests.

ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL FAMILIES!
ATTENTION IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OTHER CULTURES!

Boulevard will again be holding this much-loved event to celebrate our diversity, our cultures, and our community spirit:

Around the World - Sharing our Cultures
Thursday Evening, 6:30 pm, February 23, 2017

Would you like to share a tradition from your home country (or a country you are familiar with or would like to research) that evening?  Stations will be set up around the school gym and multi-purpose room where you can share anything about your country such as: food, arts and crafts, words from your native language, board games, sports, music, dance, or an idea of your choice  All ideas are welcome! Students and their families who attend that evening will receive a “passport” and visit the stations to learn about the various countries. If you are interested in participating, please email aroundtheworldatboulevard@gmail.com.  Thank you!

Each week the Boulevard PTO publishes the Boulevard Friday Flyer highlighting school events for our families. If you have items to contribute to the flyer, please submit to boulevardfridayflyer@yahoo.com by 12 pm on Wednesdays.
